The hospital smelled faintly of antiseptic and wet floors.
Mireya felt the tension instantly.
It was thicker today. Heavier.
"Something's off," she whispered to Jae as they walked down the corridor.
He glanced around, eyebrow raised.
"Agreed. Stay close."
By mid-morning, the subtle whispers escalated.
Files misplaced again. Minor equipment missing.
Nothing catastrophic. But enough to rattle staff.
Mireya's heart sank.
Someone was deliberately testing her and Jae—again.
Jae squeezed her hand.
"Focus on what you can control," he murmured.
"I know," she said. "But it's getting harder."
During a break, Hana approached, face serious.
"Did you notice?" she asked.
"Notice what?" Mireya replied.
"The small betrayals," Hana said quietly.
"The minor sabotage? Someone on the inside is trying to undermine you… intentionally."
Mireya felt a chill.
"Do you know who?" she asked.
Hana shook her head. "Not yet. But I think they're close. Very close."
Back at their station, Lian appeared with a polite smile.
"Good morning," she said.
Mireya and Jae returned the greeting cautiously.
But something about her tone felt off. Too calm. Too calculated.
Later, Mireya discovered a small file altered—again.
Her chest tightened.
"Jae," she whispered, showing him.
He examined it carefully. "It's deliberate. And it's escalating."
Mireya frowned.
"This isn't just curiosity anymore. It's betrayal."
During lunch, they went outside, sitting on a bench under the soft shade of trees.
Mireya sipped her tea, thinking aloud.
"Someone close to us is trying to undermine everything we've built. And I don't know who."
Jae sighed. "We'll figure it out. Together."
She raised an eyebrow.
"Do you think it could be… someone we trust?"
"Possibly," he said quietly. "But we won't jump to conclusions."
Mireya chuckled softly, despite herself.
"You sound like a detective in a TV drama."
Jae smirked. "Then consider me your personal detective. And you… my brilliant partner."
The afternoon brought more tension.
A minor incident in the supply room drew their attention.
Some equipment had been moved, creating confusion for the team.
Mireya studied the situation carefully.
The handwriting, the subtlety… she recognized it immediately.
"It's Lian," she said quietly.
Jae's eyes widened. "Are you sure?"
"Yes," she said firmly. "She's behind this. But she's not working alone."
That evening, they returned home, dripping from a sudden rainstorm.
Jae laughed softly.
"You're soaked," he said, taking off his jacket and handing it to her.
"I didn't expect the rain," she replied, shaking her head.
"You never do," he said with a grin. "But somehow you always survive it."
She rolled her eyes but smiled.
Even in betrayal, humor softened the edges.
Later, Mireya reviewed her notebook, piecing together the subtle betrayals.
Altered files, misplaced supplies, whispers… all deliberate.
Lian is involved. Someone else is orchestrating this from above.
Jae stood behind her, reading over her shoulder.
"Do you want to confront her?" he asked.
"No," Mireya said firmly. "Not yet. We need proof. Patience."
He nodded.
"Patience… and a plan," he added.
That night, they sat together on the balcony, city lights flickering in the distance.
"You know," Jae said softly, "trusting people can be risky. But it's worth it."
Mireya leaned her head against his shoulder.
"Even when they betray you?" she asked quietly.
"Yes," he said. "Even then. Because you always know who really matters."
She smiled softly.
"Then we keep moving forward. Together."
Suddenly, her phone buzzed.
A new message:
"You think you're safe? Watch carefully."
Her heart skipped a beat.
Jae grabbed it quickly.
"Someone's watching us closely," he said.
Mireya swallowed, gripping his hand.
"Then we stay alert… together."
Before bed, she wrote in her notebook:
Betrayal doesn't always shout. Sometimes it whispers, moves quietly, waits. But truth always finds its way.
Jae leaned over and kissed her forehead.
"Together," he whispered.
"Together," she echoed.
