Chapter 32 - Chapter 32: Hall of Madness

The hallway pulsed red, shadows twisting unnaturally along the walls.

Kai and Vex moved at the front, leading the group cautiously. Every step echoed like a drumbeat in the still, heavy air. The walls themselves seemed alive, flexing and breathing as if the game was watching their every movement.

"Keep close," Kai whispered. "It's not just the monsters this time. The illusions will hit everyone."

No sooner had he said it than the floor rippled beneath their feet. Panels shifted violently. Spikes jutted from cracks. Some floors gave way completely, plunging into darkness below.

From the shadows, the mutants emerged again—fused with broken traps, limbs jagged and stretching impossibly. Dozens, moving with a terrifying intelligence, blocking the safest paths.

Kai's pulse raced. "Split into pairs! Cover each other!"

The first illusion struck almost immediately. One player froze, screaming as the floor beneath them appeared to collapse entirely—though in reality it remained solid. Their mind twisted by fear, they nearly fell into the approaching mutants.

Kai lunged, catching their arm. "Focus! It's not real!"

Vex kicked a mutant back into a swinging spiked chain, sending it crashing. "We can't let panic win!"

The group pushed forward, leaping from platform to platform, dodging shadows and snapping traps. The mutants adapted, moving in waves, coordinating attacks, but each strike was slowed by the careful positioning of the group.

Suddenly, the hallway seemed to twist. Doors appeared where walls had been. Shadows morphed into the shapes of past failures—images of stages they had barely survived, the faces of fallen players, twisted and distorted.

"Keep moving!" Kai shouted, his voice cutting through the whispers of fear. "Ignore it!"

One mutant lunged, grabbing a player's leg. Kai slammed his badge half against the ground. A pulse of white light radiated outward, making the mutant screech and release its hold.

The illusions became stronger, showing players betraying each other, attacking without warning. Panic began to spread—but Kai and Vex held the core together.

"Stay together!" Vex shouted. "We fight as one!"

They ran, weaving through the maze of shifting platforms and traps. Spikes, swinging blades, collapsing floors—all designed to disorient and kill. The mutants weren't just attacking; they were herding the players, forcing them into the deadliest zones.

Kai spotted a safe path ahead, though barely wide enough for the group. "This way! Don't hesitate!"

They sprinted, pushing forward. A mutant leapt toward Kai, but Vex slammed a debris block into it. Another mutant screeched as a swinging chain took it down.

The illusions intensified—walls bleeding, players turning on each other in visions, whispers screaming betrayal.

Kai's mind raced. He focused on the reality of their movements, the trust between him and Vex, the determination of the group. Slowly, one by one, the illusions began to lose their grip on the players' minds.

The hallway finally ended in a wide chamber, the shadows receding slightly, the red light dimming. Dust and debris floated in the air.

Kai collapsed to his knees. "We… survived it…"

Vex wiped sweat and blood from his face. "But the game… it's escalating. Each stage… stronger than the last."

Kai looked at the group, who were pale, shaking, but still alive. "We keep going. Together. No matter what comes next."

From the shadows at the far side of the chamber, a faint glow appeared—an ominous door. Beyond it, the game waited, ready to push them further, combining fear, monsters, and the mind itself in ways they had never imagined.

Kai's eyes burned with determination. "Then let's show the Death Game… we're not broken yet."
