Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: Horde of Shadows

The door ahead flickered like a broken screen.

Kai and Vex stepped through cautiously, the group following close. The air was thick, damp, and carried a sharp metallic tang. Shadows moved along the walls, coiling as if alive, whispering in voices only the mind could hear: "Fear… fail… betray…"

Kai swallowed. "It's testing everything now. Strength, speed, and… our minds."

Vex nodded, eyes scanning the chamber. The floor pulsed faintly, tiles shifting beneath their feet. "What now? Traps?"

Before Kai could answer, a guttural screech echoed from the darkness ahead.

Mutants emerged. Not one or two—dozens. Their bodies were twisted, stitched from broken stage traps and shadow flesh, eyes glowing red, claws jagged and dripping with black ooze. They moved as a horde, coordinated yet chaotic, crawling over the collapsing floor and walls.

"Run!" Kai shouted.

The group sprinted, dodging swinging spiked chains, collapsing platforms, and snapping floors. Every movement had to be precise. One misstep, and they'd be impaled—or worse, trapped for the mutants to close in.

The creatures lunged, and Kai reacted instinctively, slamming his badge half to emit a pulse of white light. Several mutants screeched and faltered, giving them precious seconds.

Vex kicked debris at another, sending it sprawling into a trap. A panel collapsed, revealing spikes that skewered one of the smaller mutants. The group pressed on, barely keeping ahead of the horde.

The whispers in their minds grew louder. "Your friends… betray… your trust… is meaningless…"

Kai's jaw clenched. "Ignore it! Focus!"

The mutants adapted quickly, splitting into smaller groups to flank them. One mutant grabbed a player from behind, dragging them toward a swinging spike.

Kai lunged, grabbing the player's arm, yanking them free. The mutant shrieked, recoiling from the badge's pulse.

Vex's voice was sharp. "We can't just run! We need to fight back—strategically!"

Kai nodded. He led the group toward a cluster of unstable platforms. The mutants followed, their mass of limbs and shadows lashing wildly. Kai smashed a platform's support, sending part of the floor collapsing. Several mutants fell into the chasm, writhing and screeching.

The group pressed forward, now moving as a unit. Each step, each dodge, each strike had to be coordinated.

Another trap triggered—a swinging spiked pendulum. Kai grabbed Vex's arm. "Jump on three!"

They leaped. The pendulum swung, shattering the tiles where they had stood moments ago. The mutants lunged, but many were caught by the swinging trap, some impaled, others knocked back.

Kai's eyes burned. The horde was relentless, but the group was learning, adapting, resisting the psychological manipulation.

The door at the far end shimmered, faint light breaking through the shadows. Kai's chest heaved. "Almost there… don't stop now!"

The mutants surged for one last attack, claws swiping and shadows stretching. Kai slammed his badge half, releasing the brightest pulse yet. Several mutants screamed, recoiling into the shadows.

Vex shouted, "Move!"

They sprinted through the door, the horde crashing against the chamber behind them, unable to follow.

When they collapsed on the other side, gasping, Kai glanced at the group. Faces pale, bodies trembling, but still alive.

Kai whispered, "We survived… but this is only getting worse."

Vex's hands were shaking. "The game… it's relentless."

Kai's eyes narrowed. "And so are we. We survive. Together. Always."

The hallway ahead pulsed faintly with red light—the next stage awaited.

The Death Game wasn't finished.

And neither were they.
