Chapter 31 - The Secret of Sagos!

Jason forced a smile that didn't reach his eyes and spoke with a double meaning as he said to Kailida,"Big brother, don't worry. I'll take good care of myself. I'll definitely live on properly… and keep causing you trouble."

When Jason said the words "causing trouble," he deliberately emphasized them.

After hearing Jason's words, Kailida's face suddenly darkened. He stared at Jason and said,"My good little brother, what do you mean by that?"

Jason met Kailida's gaze head-on. For a moment, the scene looked almost like some kind of romance…Ah, spit!

In the next instant, the atmosphere froze to an extreme chill.

"Ah—!"Jason suddenly let out a loud scream, breaking the awkward tension.

"Be gentler!" Jason complained to the old doctor who was still stitching up his wound.

Kailida no longer wanted to continue talking with Jason. He turned around and prepared to leave with his attendants.

Jason, whose face was already twisted in pain, saw Kailida about to go and immediately called out to him,"Big brother, don't rush off! I still want to ask—when are you officially giving me the position of Deputy City Lord?"

"Focus on recovering first. Once your injuries heal, I'll consider arranging it for you."

After saying that, Kailida left with his attendants.

"What a beast in human skin."

As soon as Kailida left, Jason instantly changed his expression and muttered.

Seeing that Jason clearly didn't like Kailida very much, Mati asked curiously,"Young Lord, why do you seem to dislike your cousin so much?"

Jason was about to explain the reason when he suddenly noticed that the doctor was still there. He gave the old doctor a meaningful glance.

The old doctor was quite perceptive. He quickly finished up and said,"Young Lord, I'm done here. You all talk—I'll step out first."

Jason nodded and said,"Mm, you've worked hard."

After the doctor left, Jason finally began to explain slowly.

"This Kailida is definitely not a good person. To secure his position as the future King of the Southern Region, he's been trying every possible way to get rid of me. I'm pretty sure that this assassination by the mercenary group was also arranged by him."

Jason spoke to Mati in a firm, certain tone.

"If that's the case, then why did you still come to Sagos, Young Lord? Isn't that deliberately giving him a chance to harm you?"

Wei Lian blinked her big eyes. Her long eyelashes fluttered lightly, looking very beautiful—so much so that Jason was momentarily distracted.

Seeing Jason staring at her without speaking for a long time, Wei Lian frowned slightly and looked at him in confusion.

Jason snapped back to his senses, laughed awkwardly, and said,"Haha, well… it's like this. Before, I didn't intend to fight him for the position of King of the Southern Region. But he kept trying to kill me over and over again, so I changed my mind. Now, I must take the position of King of the Southern Region—and I'm also going to reclaim the position of City Lord of Sagos that should have originally belonged to me."

Jason shared his current thoughts with everyone.

"Don't worry, Young Lord! I will definitely help you reclaim everything that rightfully belongs to you," Karadi said firmly.

Mati echoed from the side,"Me too!"

Wei Lian stepped forward, clenched her fists, and said to Jason,"I'm also willing to defend the Young Lord with my life and do my part for you!"

Mati said dully,"Me too."

"I believe the Young Lord will absolutely become the future King of the Southern Region," Karadi said.

"Me too!" Mati echoed again.

"...…"

After being speechless for a moment, Jason said earnestly to Mati,"Mati, do you see this? This is the power of knowledge. Not having culture is terrifying. When everyone else is making bold declarations, all you can say is 'me too.'"

"Haha~!"Mati scratched his head and laughed awkwardly after hearing Jason's words.

"Young Lord really saw right through me. I honestly don't know what else to say, haha~!"

After hearing Mati's words, everyone couldn't help but burst into laughter.

After everyone finished tending to their wounds, Jason felt stifled staying in the castle, so he brought Karadi and the other three out of the castle.

When they arrived on the streets of Sagos, Jason also wanted to take this opportunity to sell off the remaining D-rank Furious Beast Crystals that were of no use to them and exchange them for some gold coins.

Although Jason hadn't been in this world for long, he understood one truth very clearly: no matter what world it was, money was always extremely useful.

And the gold coins he had brought from Zorn City had already been completely spent—he didn't have a single coin left.

After leaving the castle, the group headed straight to the largest trading firm in Sagos and exchanged all those surplus D-rank Furious Beast Crystals for gold coins. They got more than thirty coins in total. Although it wasn't a huge amount, it wasn't small either—enough for three or four people to eat meat and drink wine lavishly for several meals.

After leaving the trading firm, Jason and the others wandered around the streets with nothing particular to do. Suddenly, cries and the sounds of beating coming from a nearby household caught their attention.

Jason heard a woman's sobbing and the sounds of men beating someone inside that house.

Frowning, he said,"Is Sagos's public order really this terrible? In broad daylight, under clear skies—come on, let's go take a look!"

With that, Jason took the lead and headed toward the house with Karadi and the others.

Just as they reached the entrance, two armored soldiers blocked their path.

"Halt! Who are you people? We're enforcing the law here—get lost!"Both soldiers gripped their swords tightly, glaring angrily at Jason's group.

"How dare you!"

Karadi immediately drew his sword with a clang and pointed it at the two soldiers, shouting,"Do you know who this person is? How can you speak so arrogantly!"

Karadi's words startled the two soldiers. Doubt crept into their hearts as they carefully examined Jason.

One soldier looked at Jason's appearance, then at the sword at his waist, and suddenly seemed to recall something. He immediately dropped to his knees.

"Greetings, Deputy City Lord!"

Jason waved his hand and said,"Alright, get up. What exactly are you doing here?"

The soldier stood up and replied,"Reporting to Deputy City Lord, this household hasn't paid taxes for this month, so we came to forcibly collect them."

Jason nodded and said,"Oh? Collecting taxes? Hm? Wait—this month? Aren't taxes collected once per quarter? Since when did it become monthly?"

Jason frowned and questioned the soldier.

"Well… this…"

The soldier began to hesitate, clearly unsure how to explain.

Seeing the soldier's reaction, Jason immediately knew things weren't that simple. His expression suddenly turned stern.

"Speak! What exactly is going on here?"
