Chapter 30 - The Scheming Man, Kailida

When the mercenary leader heard Karadi's words, he froze on the spot. He suddenly realized that this matter was far from simple.

Swallowing hard, he cautiously asked Kailida,"Milord… it's not that I'm unwilling, it's just… it's inconvenient for me."As he spoke, the mercenary leader waved his severed arm.

Kailida shot him a sideways glance, his tone turning icy."Inconvenient? What's inconvenient about it? Don't you still have a mouth? Then use your mouth to carry it!"

"You—!"The mercenary leader, both angry and humiliated, pointed at Kailida.

Clang! One of Kailida's attendants behind him immediately drew his sword and shouted at the mercenary leader,"Watch your tone when you speak to Lord Karadi, you useless trash!"

This single action set off a chain reaction. The rest of the mercenaries all drew their weapons and stood protectively around their leader. It was clear they were fiercely loyal.

But Kailida had long been prepared.

With a faint smile, he casually snapped his fingers.

At once, more than twenty armored soldiers rushed out from the surroundings, each holding a heavy crossbow, all aimed straight at the mercenaries.

The crossbows in their hands were terrifyingly powerful weapons. A single bolt could even kill an elephant. Their only drawback was how difficult they were to cock—requiring special tools and tremendous strength.

"I spent a fortune having this batch of crossbows made," Kailida said leisurely."Even someone protected by B-rank armed rage qi would still be pierced clean through by one shot. Care to give it a try?"

Sitting with his legs crossed, Kailida tapped the table rhythmically with his fingers.

Seeing this formation, the mercenary leader knew that if a fight broke out, they would have no chance at all. They might even be wiped out in a single wave.

He immediately said to his men,"Everyone, put your weapons away."

Then he turned to Kailida and said respectfully,"Lord Kailida, we failed to complete the mission. I apologize to you here. As for the reward, forget it—we don't want it anymore. I beg you to spare our lives."

"Hahaha!"Kailida burst out laughing as he looked at the mercenaries."A bunch of money-grubbing people actually choosing not to take money? Now that's a rare sight."

He paused briefly, then continued,"But this time, it's not up to you. Whether you want it or not, you will take it!"

As soon as Kailida finished speaking, four or five soldiers pulled the triggers on their crossbows.

Bang! Bang! Bang! The heavy crossbows let out thunderous sounds. Several bolts, like large-caliber bullets, shot out and pierced straight through the chests of several mercenaries. They collapsed instantly, lifeless.

Watching his men be slaughtered so mercilessly, the mercenary leader felt his heart wrench in pain. These were brothers who had fought alongside him through life and death for years—and now they were gone just like that.

Kailida sneered and asked him coldly,"So? Are you going to carry it or not?"

The moment his words fell, the soldiers whose crossbows hadn't yet been fired had already locked their aim onto the remaining mercenaries.

"I'll carry it! I'll carry it!"The mercenary leader gritted his teeth and shouted helplessly. For the sake of his brothers' lives, he had no other choice.

With a playful expression, Kailida urged him on."Then hurry up. I'm busy."

Grinding his teeth, the mercenary leader slowly walked toward the chest of gold coins. He bent down, preparing to use his mouth to pick it up. At this moment, he had no dignity left whatsoever.

Just as his mouth was about to reach the chest, Kailida's expression suddenly changed.

He waved his hand impatiently."Enough, enough. I'm bored already. I've lost interest. Kill them."

With that, he turned around and left gracefully with his attendants.

Before the mercenaries could even react—

Bang! Bang! Bang!More than a dozen crossbow bolts were fired at once, instantly turning them into a pile of corpses.

"Has that guy Jason come back yet?"Kailida asked as he walked, glancing at the attendants beside him.

"Reporting to my lord, he has returned. But one of his arms seems to be seriously injured. He should be receiving treatment right now."

One attendant replied.

"That fellow's luck is really absurdly good," Kailida sighed.

"My lord, should we take advantage of this opportunity and finish him off while he's weak?"One attendant whispered.

"He's in Sagos right now. If anything happens to him, I won't be able to escape responsibility," Kailida said calmly."We'll need to think of another way."

The attendant immediately echoed,"My lord is absolutely right. I failed to consider that."

"Oh, right," Kailida added, suddenly changing the topic."Send someone to investigate. Who exactly is hiding in the Zuo'en Mountains? Someone actually saved that idiot Jason again. Judging from what the Thorn Star Mercenary Group said, they don't seem to be lying."

"Yes! I'll send people to investigate immediately," the attendant replied.

"And where is my idiot cousin right now?"Kailida smiled faintly."Take me to see him."

The attendant didn't dare delay for even a moment."I'll lead the way at once!"

"Ahhh—! Be gentler—! Gently! Ahhh—!"

Inside the noble physician's room in Sagos Castle, Jason's screams echoed out. The sound was so loud it could probably be heard from half a mile away.

Inside the room, an elderly doctor was using needle and thread to stitch the wound on Jason's arm, which had been bitten by the Hyena King.

Jason's injury was urgent, and unfortunately, the old doctor had run out of anesthetic. With no other choice, he could only stitch it directly. That was why Jason was howling nonstop in agony.

Sweat poured down Jason's face as he bared his teeth and complained to the old doctor,"Doctor, isn't two stitches enough? Why are you sewing it so tightly? You've already stitched three or four times, and you're not even halfway done yet!"

Clearly annoyed by Jason's nonstop chatter, the old doctor replied impatiently,"My lord, your injury is not something to be taken lightly. If it's not treated properly, it could easily leave lasting problems."

"Fine, then hurry up!"Jason shouted, trying to distract himself from the pain.

Just as Jason was screaming at the top of his lungs, Kailida walked in with two attendants.

The moment he entered, Kailida immediately put on an act. He rushed to Jason's side and asked with concern,"Jason, are you alright? As soon as I heard you were injured, I dropped everything and hurried over."

Seeing Kailida, Jason immediately forced a relaxed smile and said,"It's nothing serious. I just got bitten once, that's all. Brother, you don't need to worry."

"As long as you're fine, that's good, that's good," Kailida said solemnly."You really can't be this careless next time. If something were to happen to you, how would I explain it to Uncle?"

Watching Kailida's performance, Jason couldn't help but admire him inwardly.

Kailida's acting skills are truly impressive, he thought. It's honestly a waste for him not to be an actor.
