Chapter 1 - SYSTEM INITIATED

[ System initialising ]

Brown eyes widened as he lay down in bed, the face of a relatively attractive middle aged man froze as the panel exploded to life suddenly I front of his vision. The military bunk he was on shuddering at his surprised lurch.

The cold metal interior remained just that, cold. His bunk mate below remained completely unawares about the sudden almost esoteric occurance going in infront of his very eyes.

' This ... this can't be real, not here ... not to me' He was a simple munitions officer, a job someone had to have, he was in charge of everything. From the VLS, launched systems and guns.

He had a simple life, joining the military when he was nineteen, becoming a part of the navy, his studies affording him the chance to start as a SNFO. Rising through the ranks, passing bars and tests, years of dedicated unyielding service ending with his current station. The WSO of the Arleigj Burke class vessel he had served on for the last year.

' No.... nonono'

[ analysing surrounding technologies, Arleigh Burke class vessel detected- compatibility for transport - useable- initialising transport ]

' Wait what... STOP ' Before he could so much as cry out, the world exploded into white light, his vision Fading to black the next moment, falling to his back as the system forced him to sleep as it relocated him.

....

He came to on his ships cold hard ground. Eyes rolling as he woke. The tennis ball covered legs of the rolling chair used to keep the finish of the floor nice and clean.

" Smith ... you see what hit me " He raised to the bunk of the NSO, Only to he met with the empty bunk, bed sheets folded neatly whilst the pillow used by his long time friend lay pristine as if never used. " Smith .."

Eyes blurred in confusion, he from the cold finish on the floor, stepping out of the room he spent his service in out into the thin cold thin corridor outside.

Khane stared at the panel floating, translucent against the background.

' What am I supposed to do with this' He looked up at the ships interior, cupping his hands to his mouth.

" HELLOOOOO , IS ANYBODY THERE " His voice echoed through the bowls of the ship, the only noise being the hum of machinery, from running water through pipes to the hum of the generator deeper in the ships bowels.

Silence reigned, there should've been activity, there should have been noise from either the mess hall or shuffling feet, muffled voices. But there was silence.

' Shit ... ' And so he took off running, up and down the thin halls of the ship, as fast as he could, throigh the dorms, through the mess hall and bathrooms. There was nothing and nobody. Not some prank anyone would be able to pull, not some disappearing act. Just an empty ghost ship apart from himself as the cruiser hummed, rocking up and down as it surged across the ocean.

By the time he returned to the door to his dorm, he was put of breath, red-faced and gagging.

' Bloody hell' His hands fell to his knees.

' piss off ' Cold hard logic dictated this was a lie, sure there were superstitions in the navy, but that didn't mean he would just readily accept ... whatever this was.

He rose, grunting as he strode across the ships floor, opening and stepping into the armoury. On sheer instinct, his shoudler sagged in relief, rows after rows of firearms, bullet proof vests and several boxes of ammunition sat piled high.

" Okay ... okay okay " Cold hard determination rose, he reached forward, ripping the velcro strap apart and sliding the vest into place, fastening it into place before equipping a holster and several magazines into the slots on his armour.

' Time to figure this shit out' He slid a magazine into the butt of the pistol, raising the pistol and stepping into the hallways, aiming down the eerily empty bowels of the ship.

For over an hour, he stalked up and down the halls, walking slower, more careful to check each and every compartment, every floor. He only stopped when he stepped into the bridge of the vessel, met with the high tech computers functioning without any users, the ships guidance systems moving towards an island detected in the far horizon.

' What is that' He reached for and pulled open a pair of binoculars, and his breath hitched.' the fuck '

As soon as his eyes layed sight on the wooden vessels looming into eh distance, a chime sounded in his ears, and a panel illuminated.

From somewhere in the ship , several thumps and echoes echoed from deep within the ships corridors, startling him for a moment before he composed himself.

' This... this can't be real, it simply cant be' His eyes searched the mid distance , before they hardened into cold chips, raising the binoculars to his eyes once more.

' fuck ... '

....

" Drag them out of their homes " Ragst roared from the top deck of his ship, roaring as the crew moved to do what he ordered, running down the gangway onto the pierinto the small village where women cried and children hid, men trying to defend their town with scimitars and flintlock pistols. The stride smell of gunpowder wafted across the pier as they rushed the village, all the whole Ragst and his quartermaster watched the carnage unfold.

Smoke rose to obscure as gunpowder sprayed the air, limbs were torn apart as blood sprayed, men fell to the ground in pools of their own blood.

" I got a bad feeling about this sir" Billy whispered at his side, if they got caught... on the backfoot, they were done for, for these villagers wouldn't appear them.

" Don't worry Billy, they'll fetch a fine price once we reach the mainland" Ragst assured his second in command as torches were tossed into huts, burning houses to flush out villagers, screams echoing as he watched with a frown marring his face.

As the men of the village fought to the last, no more than twenty of those men remained, fighting fiercely to defend and protect their families. Bodies littered the grounds, gore spraying the ground red.

" It's about time we disem...." A terrible wail echoed from the ocean, shaking his lungs and ears, breaking his stride as he whirled around with wide fearful eyes.

" What in the name of the gods was that" Ragst held his ears as everyone that remained onboard ducked at a second wail moments later, from his quartermaster to the most cowardly of his crew, they ducked as the deep sound rolled over them and into the village they were accosting.

He almost collapsed as his lung threatened to collapse, dragging hismelf up onto the railing to peer at what monster could make such a cry. Only it wasn't a monster of beastly flesh that met his eye, but a monster of metal.

" What is that " It's Hull taller than their entire ship, it was larger than any sea faring vessel they had every seen, instead of flowing with waves it broke them apart against its hull as it approached, tearing across waters that would have rocked their vessel.

" PREPARE TO ENGAGE" Despite the clear shaking of his legs, his harsh voice roared, yet even as the vessel crossed hundreds of metres in moments, it didn't come head on, instead as the man around rushed to the cannons amd into the ships levels, the monstrosity turned off the starboard bow, revealing the length of the vessel, atleast five times longer than their own, with strange contraptions marring it's deck.

He couldn't see anyone on board, not from this distance.

" What do you plan to do from out there " He didn't understand, as men stood at the half unmanned cannons, ready to fire even though their cannons couldn't clear the sheer distance between the vessel in the distance.

Yet his answer came in a way he hadn't expected. It didn't release another cry into the ocean, instead white and yellow light erupted from the front of the ships deck, as a singular small rod like contraption launched into the air, leaving behind a trail of smoke as it streaked into the sky.

His head and the heads of everyone else present raised to watch the streak, mouths agape in awe which lasted a single second before it crashed down apon them with the force of a falling meteor.

The crew on shore watched, turning to the ship just in time to watch the entirety of the vessel they had served on for years go up into a collosal explosion as a spear of black fell from the heavens directly into the centre of the ships hull.

The following explosion threw everyone present back, blew trees away and sent ash into the skies, wood fell from the heavens as chunks or blood, wood and viscera peppered the small waterside village.

Ears wrung and bloodshot eyes opened, and once more did that deep rumble rise from the ocean, that colloidal monstrosity still coming closer even as the frigate they had long called home was submerged in moments.

They stared, mouths agape, as through the smoking wreckage, the silhouette of the ships loomed, turning on the port, now heading straight for the small coastal village like a beast with a vengeance.

What would have taken frigates maybe ten minutes took two, It neared, the tallest thing they had ever laid eyes apon, stopping several hundred metres away from shore, like a looming monolith promising death and destruction apon them.

" Hi...HIDE " Belmy cried, tearing his briefs and hat from his body as he began stripping a body of it's clothing, intending to hide amongst the towns folk from whatever was about to step foot on their shores.

Some did the same, others ran into the houses where women hid, hiding amongst them with his scimitar ready to pierce his enemies, blade levelled at a pregnant woman's back.

They hid as best they could as a single spec of a man lowered hismelf onto a much smaller vessel lowered from the towering vessels side , a deep rumble escaping the strange boat that sped towards the pier faster than any ship or canoe.

It bounced across the waves, tearing in their direction, before arriving within moments.

Death had come for them , and it's dues would be collected.

....

He arrived onto the pier, stepping onto shabby wooden planks. The RIB floating as he stepped up onto the planks.

" Hm ... " He spied the floating wreckage, the peppered wooden planks and burning gunpowder. " Strange place ..."

What coastal village apart of European descent these days had huts and wooden ships.

The sinking feeling in his stomach grew, he had verified his target and after several minutes of trying to communicate with command, made a decision that would cost him his job and have him tried in federal court if not the Hague. If what this system said was a lie, his life was over. But he wasn't a man to ignore what was clearly a supernatural event, nor was he one to dent facts.

And the facts were, infront of him were pirates killing and butchering, all seen through his binoculars. He had acted with the information at hand, and he didn't regret it.

" These still rats amidst the sheep" He growled as he produced his firearm, clutched in his right hand as he analysed the amount of ammunition on his person.

Eight magazines, more than enough to end this fiasco.

A speaker phone was clipped to his left hip, grasping it in his left hand, raising it to his lips as a crack echoed from the speaker phone.

" HELLO ... THIS IS CAPTAIN KHANE ALEXIS OF THE USS JEREMIAH DENTON ... ALL RESIDENTS OF THIS VILLAGE ARE TO MEET IN THE TOWN SQUARE IN ORDERLY FASHION ... ANY AGRESSIVE ACTIONS WILL BE NEUTRALSIED WITH EXTREME PREJUDICE " Khane's voice echoed across the silent yet burning village, lowering the speaker, Khane grunted, rising and marching across the pier with a slow purposeful gait.

He stepped up to the first line of bodies layed low by pirates, men groaning, half dead yet still stupbourning clinging to life, entire chunks ripped out of abdomens, arms ripped off and legs missing.

They watched him, staring as he approached. Those still alive grunted through grit teeth. Other bodies stated ahead, eyes murky and unseeing, mouths still cut in fierce faces meant to intimidate.

He felt no pain for the pirates reaping what they sewed, but the towns men who had died for their loved ones, his heart lurched for them, but laws he had sworn to adhere to stayed his hand. Mercy killing was a war crime, perhaps if these men were resilient enough he could get some of the village people to come and tend to them. And so he knelt down to a villager.

Blood gushed from a wound in his stomach, tears running down his face as he held the puncture wound.

" I'm going to help you, stay still " He grabbed a molten rod half buried, carefully grabbing the coolest end before plunging the heated end apon the open wound, cauterising the wound as best as he could despite the man's echoing cry.

" Stay in there it should stop bleeding, dont move and wait, I'm clearing the village and then I'll have them come tend to you .. stay strong" He held the man's shoudler before rising and marching into the village proper.

....

They had heard the booming voice echoed from the skies, followed by the crackling boom that shook their ears.

Fear and terror drove them, listening to the voice of God that compelled them to meet in the towns square.

Men and women, those that belonged and those that didn't, met infront of a series of stalls half destroyed standing around them.

Fish, flour and other amenities sat wither on displays or destroyed, nets lay sprawled about and alcohol lay spilled.

They gathered at the centre of these stalls, women draped in linen dressed of ugly design or outright sheets, the women huddled together as the men strayed away, the children were herded together with the women not aware of the predator hiding under one woman's dress.

" Thank you for your patience" A harsh voice echoed from the squares entrance, as the tallest man anyone had ever laid eyes on stepped into view.

At six foot two, he stood like a giant compared to the usual five foot level men who had to crane their necks to look up at him.

Garbed in his blue camouflage navy uniform, the cap fastened to his head as his bulletproof vest lay overtop. He marched slowly across broken splinters, regarding everyone present with a strange stare.

His approach stopped several paces from the nearest man, a portly figure with a long flowing beard and reverent eyes.

" Is this all" His deep baritone voice crashed against the ears of those already considering him either a phantom of the sea, an envoy of the gods if not a god himself.

" Y...yes lord " His brow raised, cold chipped brown eyes squinting ever so slightly.

" I see... " He stepped around out of arm and weapons reach, hand held to his hip where his holstered weapon lay.

" I saw men stripped of clothing down on the pier... am I to assume that those responsible stand before me now" Fingers toyed at the base of his firearms grip.

" Sir ... " Before an excuse could be uttered, a scream and sudden explosive movement startled the men, originating from the group of women as ones skirt was thrown up, a man scurrying out and sprinting out at Khane as fast as he could.

" AAHHH " A man burst from the crowd of midwives, scimitar raised high over his head.

' I see ' Khane didn't allow the man to near any closer than three metres before he raised his firearm, aimed directly at the man's brow. ' So this is how they are'

Mid wives and husbands ducked at a sudden thunderous clap, shocked as the pirate simply fell forward mid charge, like a puppet suddenly let do, he slid across the ground with a thumb sized hole punched through his skull.

" My apologies " Khane raised the pistol once more, shooting the man's head once more, the man's legs twitching a single time at the Brian's nerves firing, just to be sure before leveling a harsh, calculating gaze apon the mid wives and men around.

" LINE UP ... ALL OF YOU " His roar echoed across those gathered, pinning each and every person with a snarl, his pistol raised as they ducked away from where it was pointed. " NOW "

Quickly men and women of all ages came to stand in two lines, shaking under the fear that made some wet themselves.

" You ... " He pointed at a young girl no older than five, shaking under his beckoning finger, regarding each and every other person present with harsh and judgemental suspicion. " Come here "

The girl ducked her head, lifting the hem of her dirty dress before crossing the mudded ground and presenting herself to the daunting man.

At six feet tall he was easily the tallest man she had ever lain eyes on, and as he watched her come to stand before him with those dark brown eyes, she felt as if she was in the presence of a God.

Contrary to what they thought, the fearful watched him as he knelt down onto one leg, staring the small child in the eye.

" Tell me child ... is there anyone here that shouldn't be ... the men attacking your village" He gestured to not only the men, but the women two, each of whom looked taken aback by his suspicion.

" Walk with me will you " He rose, staring at the two lines as he began to guide her between the lines of the men and women.

" This one " He pointed the gun at an old man's head, whom passed himself as the barrel pointed at his forehead.

" N...no " The girls meek voice escaped her lips, as he stepped to the next.

One by one they moved down the line until they came upt to the fifth, a young man with a foggy eye, gulping and sweating profusely, shaking as the monster and girl came to stand infront of him.

' Please ... please ... ' His lip quivered as wide impressionable eyes stared up at him.

" This one ..." There must have been something on his face, his plea met by the gods as the girls blue eyes stated at his face, searching, seeing him. She knew, and he knew she knew. Silently he closed his eyes amd sent off a quick prayer.

" N....n...no " His eyes flew open at her words, he would have sung her praises to the heavens if it wouldn't give him away.

" hm ... okay " Khane stepped to the side, yet before he pointed his gun at the next man, he rounded back to the relieved man, aiming his pistol back at the cleared man and firing into his one good eye, opening up a cavity in his head with the bullet that slung from his pistol, dropping the body as simply as the last. " Hiding is useless "

The hidden pirate dropped amongst more stifled cries of fear, where Khane gave the girl one long look before stepping up to the next. She looked away, both shame and fear compelling her to continue. " This one ..."

Three more were found amongst the men standing side by side, correctly identified by the small girl, they met the same fate as the last. With none of the women being part of the pirate crew, the gathered villagers were allowed to disperse to clean up the mess of their homes.

With the fiasco ended, bodies littering the ground, men were allowed to rush to the pier to save what men still stubbornly clung to life depsite their injuries.

Women made themselves scarce, sending looks amidst hushed whispered as they cleared.

Khane himself settled himself on a barrel of ale near the pier, the Arleigh burke class destroyer casting its shadow over the village as the sun began to set in the far horizon.

As he cleaned his firearm, he stared at the glowing panel before his eyes, fingers moving with practiced movement, Studying the panel closely with a frown marring his face.

' Okay ... explain ' he didn't knownif he had to speak to it, but since it translated sound directly into his ears, he believed it may be able to read his thoughts.

' Of course ... if I hadn't thought about it would you have provided this ' No answer met his thought, just the panel remaining silent at his dig at the system.

' Whatever ... ' His head hung in silent resignation, grunting as he dismissed the system panel and stared at the ship contrasting sharply with its environment.

His head hit the wall of the hut the barrel say against, eyes trailing to the skies in loathing ' Why me '

....

For the night, the vessel loomed under the village silently held its breath. None knew what the man in charge of the vessel wanted, many whispered, others watched. But none dared approach the man slumped on the wall atop the barrel of ale.

[ Login initiated... X1 gacha draw available ... implementing draw ] The chime of the system alerted him as the sun's fingers crept across the horizon.

[ X1 fleet commander ensemble ] A sleeve carrying the new uniform appeared at his side amidst the early morning mist flowing through the village.

' Still here ... ' Teeth clenched and his brow furrowed. A growl escaped his taunt lips as he rose, grabbing the uniform bag and marching to the pier where he tossed the bag into the dinghy waiting for him.

....

From the early hours of the day to mid day, the mysterious captain wasn't seen, his smaller craft missing until he was spotted returning to the coastal village pier, where he stepped onto the wooden planks wearing an all white uniform with several badges of different colour, white hat fastened tightly to his head.

" He...he's back " A man wearing simply leather grieves rushed into the village chiefs office , startling the man whom quickly rose and made his way out of the house he operated out of.

" Maybe now he'll make his demands known " Thoigh they were intimidated, they would still fight to the last if this man or demigod called for their women and children.

People hid in their abodes, fear having clutched them all night, peeking through windows as they watched their chief tantively approached the man that had stood on the pier in waiting for them to approach.

Apon their arrival, the man now draped in white removed his cap, his impassive stare clenching their hearts as he tucked the cap under his armpit.

" Greetings , I am fleet commander Khane Alexis of the uss jeremiah denton" He inclined his head in greeting and silent conveyed respect. " I apologise for my actions yesterday"

" Oh its ... " Fleet commander was not a small title, infact they were quite aware of what this title imposed by the imperial fleet meant. " You're with the empire "

" No ... I am not, I represent the United States Navy, member of the United nations security council " Khane regurgitated, nodding his head as the man infront of him sagged at his denial of imperial connection.

" United States... nations " The two portly individuals looked between eachother before turning back to the fleet commander.

" A conglomerate of free countries and states and island nations coming together to maintain order and peace in their borders"

" And is this vessel behind you common for your... nations " The pointed toward the vessel that awes and terrified them, as villagers seeing their meeting began to watched around corners and walked by pretending to be busy.

" It is ..." Technically not a lie, he nodded his head slowly. " Unfortunately due to a series of unfortunate events I am unable to communicate with the rest of the UN ... though rest assured, there are indeed a large amount of these vessels in the fleets of the UN "

Assured they were not, without having seen or heard of the UN in the past, knowing that a large amount of these vessels existed created tremors through their hearts.

" Y... you're not here to invade ... sell our people are you " The chiefs hand whispered, shaking at the thought of a whole legion of these ships on there shores.

" Practices such as slavery are universally banned in the UN and the same goes for unsanctioned invasion of any nation whether they be allied or not " He assured the chiefs assistant, his cold facts soothing the man as the villagers about whispered amidst themselves.

" You say these nations have laws ... may we know what your laws regarding piracy are " The village chief had an idea, a smart, conniving idea he felt would benefit everyone present, especially the people he was in charge of.

" Piracy is barred and all vessels participating in such is tried in a federal court, if they pose a sufficient danger to our vessels or innocent parties then lethal force is permitted as you have observed " A cold bark escaped his lips, gesturing to the wreck half submerged in the water.

" I see ..." The chielf stroked his beard in thought, lips puckering as a metaphorical light shon in his gaze.

" How does one join your united nations my friend " The words of the chief drew stunned whispers from the witnessing audience, men and women now openly oggling at the conversation.

" One must submit an application for the security council to deliberate over " Khane, maintaining his professional demeanour explained the step by step process a country must go through to join the UN.

" Would .. an island nation suffice " The village was now alight with silent talks, the chief smiling to himself, he didn't hear and refute of his words, they all understood and for the most part ... they unanimously agreed.

" I believe a concession could be made " Khane raised amd eyebrow, back arching slightly " Am I to believe you are expressing your desire to join the UN "

" You would be correct my friend " The chef turned to look at the men of the village, conducting a silent consensus as most of the men present inclined their heads in approval.

" Then I will await you to draft an application, though you must understand that your island and all ports available will become under the charge and protection of the UN and allied forces and a military base will be erected on your soil ... though your village will remained untouched and unharmed in any way " Khane explained, the chief listening, smiling in relief before extending his hand.

" That is understood and accepted... we simply ask you to protect our village and our people " The chief whispered as Khane extended his hand and shook the chiefs sweat marred grip.

" That is our duty and it will be performed " Their handshake solidified the deal unofficially, now Khane simply waited to officially recieve the papers.

" I will draft your contract immediately and present it to you within the hour " The village chief turned amd marched away, past a gap of villagers opening to allow him past, head held high as he hoped he was doing the right thing. But the alternative was potentially angering this godly force, something they couldn't afford.

" I'll be waiting here " And for nearly an hour, as the chief painstakingly drafted a contract that would both appease the villagers and this foreign nation, Khane stood on the pier, under the watchful eye of the curious villagers staring at him as both a hero and invader.

It was only when the chief returned with a piece of parchment with barely dried ink on its rough page, did Khane break his stance, holding his hand out and accepting the piece of parchment in his waiting hand.

Under the nervous watch of the chief and village, his gaze slowly read the application, the chiefs wavering lips shifting at Khanes impassive gaze.

[ Accept : Y/N ]

' Accept ' Truthfully he only needed the pier and land to operate , but these people saw it as something else, a chance for safety under a power so alien they couldn't understand it. The chance for their wives and children to not fear the grip of piracy, of protection from beasts under the watch of a giant.

' Accept '

[ Designation NEW PORT has tied itself to your banner, Port available for use, village data has been added for management]

" Congratulations" Khane stated, rolling the parchment up and holding it behind his back. " You are now under the protection of the UN, I expect this agreement to be upheld by both parties... "

The chief almost collapsed in relief, and the whole villages demeanour seemed to shift at the announcement.

" Thank you sir ... thank you "Men sagged, relief flooding them, women silently celebrated with whispered words.

" Now before anything else ... I must make a request ... " The village froze at the sudden announcement.

" That is " Worry bloomed, surely this man wasn't about to make lies of his own words.

" I require crew for my ship, if anyone wishes to join the Navy of the UN apon my vessel, applicants will be vetted, conducted within the next twenty four hours " Khane announced, the building terror giving way to silent relief..

" I'm sure many within the village will be happy to board your vessel " The chief gave low whispers, truthfully he expected most of the boys of age to throw themselves at the opportunity to board the ship as crew.

' I believe we'll have to perform a tally shortly when these boys depart ' And as his eyes drifted to the young men around the village, he saw eyes alight with ferver, saw shifting feet and nervous excitement. His head hung and a small smile came to his face.

" Now ... if you would so mind ... I require a building whilst planning to develop a plot of land " He didn't know if they had any housing to spare since the pirate raid, but his request was accepted regardless.

" Of course ... we have a building available right now " And so the Chief lead him into the village to a hutt where a old man had died the day prior in the firefight.

" I apologise for our lack of accommodations, this is all we have available as we rebuild... "

" No ... it will work just fine ... please have anyone who wishes to join as a soldier of the UN gather here at sunrise ... I will be on my ship in the meantime " The chief nodded, word quickly spreading theoigh the village whikst for another day Khane returned to the Jeremiah denton moored off shore.

...

The ship was as silent apon his return as it was during his departure, where he found hismelf seated on a comfortable cushioned chair in his new captains quarters.

A single bed in the corner as comfortable as all the others, a bookshelf mounted above the desk he currently sat with his uniform hanging by a hanger.

He looked at a map of the island with a tight jaw.

[ Please select a plot of land to begin development ]

' I know shut up'Since accepting the agreement and gaining military control of the island, the system had been rather insistent on him picking a portion of the island to being fortifications.

' I shouldn't make it near the village incase the system does something... strange in their sight' He didn't know the system would despoit ships in the world for his use if it did any, would they sail from the horizon or simply materialise infront of him.

From what he guessed he was in a period of time either in the early to mid seventeen hundreds or possibly earlier based on village customs and book keeping. Their general education and knowledge of the outside world pointed to a rather concerning picture of early technological development and arcane arts.

And though he had no idea about anything related to the arcane, he atleast knew the footnotes of the history of technological advancement to be able to make an educated guess.

' Though I could be entirely wrong, this isn't exactly the world I am familiar with' He had come to accept it no matter how unlikely, he was in a time and world unfamiliar, so going off of old world history was ill advised.

His eyes trailed over coves and shorelines before they settled on a cove at the opposite side of the island to the villages orientation. Large enough for the Jeremiah denton to moore, large enough to build a passably sized base with access to the rest of the island.

[ Location selected, confirm : Y/N ]

' Yes ' The map glowed for a moment as the ship shuddered around.

[ Mission triggered . The start of something greater : Naval base construction : Begin construction of your first military compound .
