Kane POV
She slowly walked into the office, timid but yet with her head held high.
"She should be bowing to the alpha aura" my wolf clipped.
I didn't reply, lost in the sight of her. The dress she was wearing hugged against her body perfectly, her eyes glistened in the dimly lit office like emeralds, her copper hair glossy and flowing over the smooth light skin of her shoulders.
She wasn't bowing, and the impact of us in the room with her, two strong alphas, should have forced her to, involuntarily.
Was she really human?
Then I saw it.
Her eyes briefly flashed gold, in a blink were back to the deep emerald before.
"Who are you?" Knox said
"I… I'm Callie, Levi hired me to work in the bar"
She replied timidly.
Goddess I could listen to her voice for eternity.
"What are you?" I interjected slowly.
There was a brief pause, a look flashed across her face, undeniable confusion.
"I.. I don't … Levi asked me the same thing" she said as if talking to herself.
"Where did you come from? What pack?" Know barrelled questions at her, frustrated with the little information she was giving us.
But there was something about her, in her face. I don't think that she actually knew she was a wolf shifter. If she was truly 18 her wolf would have made themselves know. I continued, deep in thought, pacing the office as Knox interrogated her.
"P..pack? What? I.. I just needed a job to pay for collage" she replied shakily.. tears slowly gathered in her eyes.
I mindlinked Jax - "get here now"
He replied quickly- "What has Knox done now, I'm not going to keep clearing up his messes" I cut him off "Get. Here. Now!" My tone frustrated through gritted teeth.
"Collage? You expect us to believe that you're human, our wolves recognise you too!" Knox bellowed.
Callie began shaking, tears streaming down her flushed cheeks.
"P..please, I don't know what you mean!" She pleaded.
I believed her.
"Knox, she doesn't know she's a wolf shifter. I can sense she's telling the truth" I mindlinked him.
Knox grunted and turned his back to Callie.
A knock came at the door, it opened slowly. Jaz poked her head into the office and cleared her throat gently "alpha's… please, I vouch for the girl. I do not believe she knows of her true self."
I looked up at Jaz, she was one of our pack members, we grew up together. I respected her opinion. She was the reason I came up with the idea of the club. She loved all creatures and believed there should be harmony throughout species. I invited her into the office.
"Alpha Kane. I met Callie today, she applied for the job online. Simply looking for summer work to pay living through collage. She didn't even have a place to stay so I have taken her in"
I look to Knox, his back still facing us, his hands fisted either side of him. Callie sat in the same chair, shaking, tears rolling, looking at us as if we'd lost our damn minds.
Jaz turned to Callie -" tell them about your childhood, tell them what you told me" she nodded gently to Callie as if coaxing a timid cat out of a create.
"I.. uh.. I was an orphan. I grew up in foster care. I moved around a lot. My last family said I was too ill to take care of so once I turned 18 I was on my own.. I worked hard and got a scholarship to collage."
To ill to take care of? What did she mean?
Jaz cut in again, addressing the confused look on my face. Knox turned slowly.
"I asked her what she'd meant by that too she said she had a heart condition and the medication she needed to live cost too much money so the family cast her out"
"What is wrong with your heart Callie?" I ask tentatively.
"I.. I was born with it. A murmur." She replied.
"I have to take medication every day to treat the symptoms."
"Alphas, the medication… it's not for her heart." Jaz informed us.
We shared a confused look, Knox and me before the door burst open.
