Callie's POV
"NO!" One of the men shouted.
A chill ran down my spine.
Who were these people? Why were they so upset about me being here?
Jaz came over to me and settled in the seat beside me. She grabbed my hand, patting it soothingly.
"Don't be scared, they won't hurt you. I promise. You're safe." She whispered to me.
"I don't get it. There's something we're missing" one of the other men said as though in thought.
I didn't get it either. What was all this talk about wolf shifters, alphas and scents. It was something straight out of a fairytale…or nightmare. My eyes glistened over with she'd tears. I couldn't take it anymore.
My heart began racing in my chest uncontrollably, my breathing hitched.
"Callie?.. Callie?!? Are you okay?" Jaz called but her voice grew fainter.
"Fuck! She's going to pass out"
"Quick get me her bag, it must be her heart." I heard Jaz call
Then darkness succumbed.
I woke to bright lights forcing me to close my eyes again. The faint smell of antiseptic burned my nose.
"Callie, oh thank goddess you're okay!" I heard Jaz's voice as she grabbed my hand.
"WH..where am I?" I choked out.
"Shh, it's okay you're safe, in hospital. Have some water" Jaz held a glass up to my lips. I drank slowly letting the icy water sooth my throat.
"Why am I here?" I asked in sudden realisation, panicking. I can't afford a hospital stay!
"It's okay Callie, the Alphas brought you here, you don't need to worry. You're safe" Jaz explained soothingly.
A knock at the door interrupted my reply.
"Good evening Callie, I'm Doctor Mary. You fainted dear, your stable now I want to keep you in and keep an eye on you, you're a little underweight for my liking so I'm prescribing hearty meals and plenty of rest" the doctor spoke calmly and sweetly.
"What I about my heart? Does the medication need to be adjusted again?" I asked, I truly couldn't afford for that to happen, most of my income was spent on the current doses I needed.
"Heart?… there's nothing wrong with your heart darling" the doctor replied slowly.
Jaz turned to look at me.
"But my doctor back home… my medication" I couldn't take it all in. Was this doctor saying I was healthy? Had I been chucked out of my foster family for nothing, wasted all my money on medication I didn't need?
"Can I take a look at this medication your doctor has prescribed?" Doctor Mary asked skeptically.
I nodded to Jaz who brought the bottle of pills out of my bag and handed them to doctor Mary.
The doctor examined the bottle, frowning as she read the ingredients. She unscrewed the lid and sniffed the contents. Her eyes grew wide, replaced with a frown.
"Who prescribed these?" She said angrily.
"Uh.. um.. my Doctor…. Doctor Howard"
"You are not to take any more of these, they are not what you've been told they are." Doctor Mary said reverently, leaving n room for arguing.
I looked at Jaz who seemed lost in thought, glassy eyed. When she turned to look at me the Doctor took her leave and left my hospital room.
"Jaz what do you think were in those pills?" I asked in a nervous whisper.
"Something very bad….Callie..they've been.. suppressing your true self." She said cautiously as though trying to think of the rights words.
"My true self?"
" You are a wolf shifter Callie… those pills… they've been suppressing your wolf to make you.. Human."
