Ethan was a normal otaku. He did nothing in life except watch anime.
Literally, he hadn't eaten to the point
that his body became emaciated—almost like a Minecraft skeleton. No exaggeration.
One day he was watching Naruto in his very old apartment, on a bed that looked strange. He said :
"Oh man, Boruto is trash. I don't know what they were thinking—Naruto is so much better. There's no comparison."
Ethan didn't notice that the ceiling was severely cracked and about to collapse.
As he flipped over on the bed, he saw the ceiling and started,
"What the h—"
Before he could finish, the roof collapsed. The last thing Ethan saw was an iron rod hurtling toward his eye.
He also saw two people standing on the ruined roof, smiling.
Ethan died.
But...
Ethan opened his eyes slowly and said, "Huh?! Wh... where am I?"
He began to remember what had happened. When he recalled the person smiling on the roof, he recognized him—his father.
His father had always wanted the money their mother left for Ethan, but had been refused.
When Ethan realized it was his dad, he grew angry and screamed :
"This rude father! I've never seen anyone this despicable before!" Ethan sighed, then looked around to see where he was.
The place around him looked like outer space.
He opened his eyes in surprise and said, "Am I in space?"
Something was shining in the distance to his left. When he focused,
he saw an object like a meteor approaching at terrible speed.
"Is that a mete... ?!" he began, but before he finished he was struck by a blinding light.
When he thought he was dead again, he heard a sound:
[Ding. The system has found its host. System attached.]
A bewildered expression passed over his face, then a smile appeared and his eyes lit up when he heard the sound. He said,
"System? Oh my God—do you mean a system like in anime?"
[Yes, host. This system can be whatever you want.]
Ethan asked, surprised, "Wait a minute, system—what do you mean you can be whatever I want? Can you explain?"
[Sure, host. But you have to focus; it's a bit complicated.]
"Okay, I'm focused."
[First of all, you should know how I was made. I wasn't created by a person.
I formed over time from an energy called primordial energy. This energy can take many forms and can exist anywhere.
It's not mana or qi, it was spread throughout all the worlds before gathering in one place and forming me—the system.]
"So there really are energies called chi and mana?" Ethan asked. "You say you can be any energy, right?"
[Yes, host.]
Ethan, now smiling, said, "So can you be a system that gives me abilities from anime worlds?"
[Yes, I can, host.]
"Great—gre—" Ethan started, but the system interrupted.
[There is a condition. You must choose at most three anime to draw abilities from.]
"..."
"Wait, why?" Ethan asked.
[I'm doing this for you, host. If you choose too many anime worlds, efficiency decreases.]
"I get it," Ethan said. "Since I have to choose, I'll pick Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach. What do you think?"
[That's better. Let's start by creating a body for you. What do you want it to look like?]
At first Ethan didn't understand, but when he looked at himself he found he was transparent.
"Wait—am I a soul? Right, I forgot I died."
"Okay, let's choose my new appearance," Ethan said, his expression turning a little sinister.
