Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 Changes

Kwame and his mom moved to another house to start life afresh. They took this action because Kwame's dad had passed and some family members wanted the house in which they lived to themselves. To avoid any conflict, Helena, Kwame's mom decided to buy a house in Accra and leave Kumasi.

Kwame was very close to his dad before he passed on. He had to attend therapy sessions before he could accept the fact that his best friend, his dad was dead and gone. Kwame knew how poor his dad was when growing up, so poor that his dad used to sleep on empty stomach some days. Because of this, Kwame respected the needy so much. He always say to himself. 'dad was once like them'

After he relocated to Accra with his mom, he went back to Kumasi to visit his dads grave.

KWAME:

Our house isn't as huge as the one in Kumasi dad, but since it's just mommy and I now I guess it's cool.

(Kwame's phone began to ring)

Mom

HELENA:

Where are you Kwame? The driver said he took you to the mall, but can't find you.

KWAME:

I'm at Kumasi mom, I'm with dad.

HELENA:

What the hell?

Do you know how dangerous it is going there alone?

KWAME:

I'm a man mom! I'm 16 for crying out loud.

HELENA:

Oh please shut it.

Don't move, the driver is on his way.

KWAME:

I can chatter a drive you know.

HELENA:

Kwame Ofori LeBrone, don't push me to the wall.

KWAME:

It's dad I visited c'mon, don't you think you're over reacting.

( Helena ended the call )

I'm cooked!

The driver went for him and sent him home. Kwame was very sleepy when they arrived. He got out of the car and went straight to his room. The driver called Helena to inform her they've arrived. Helena left work immediately and returned home. She went to Kwame's room.

HELENA:

LeBrone wake up!

KWAME:

Mom..mom, I told you I don't like to be called that. Call me Kwame.

HELENA:

Is it because your dad is also called Kwame you're rejecting this amazing name.

( kwame smiled and hugged his mom )

HELENA:

This won't work sweetheart, next time you want to visit your dad you inform me.

I mean what was going through your mind?

KWAME:

Mommy please.

HELENA:

My dear Kwame you're grounded.

And yes, the school you chose to attend isn't right. I'll get you a better school.

KWAME:

Well that school is dad's school, I mean he schooled there years back.

HELENA:

Yeah I know

Anyways don't come to me asking to change your school in the near future.

Kwame fell on his bed immediately his mom left. He wondered if he was making the right decision ditching a well equipped school for a public school just because he wanted to have a feel of what his dad went through.

The day Kwame would start school had come. He woke up very early and got ready to set off. He went to the dinning table ready to have breakfast.

HELENA:

Erm hello who are you please.

( the two burst into laughter )

Seriously, where are you going this early. I'm pretty sure the driver is now washing your car. Don't tell me you want me to drop you.

KWAME:

Who is talking about my car? I'm picking a troski.

HELENA:

Hell no Kwame, I won't allow my only son pick a troski to school.

KWAME:

Mom, dad used to take this same troski when he was little. It's not that bad mom

HELENA:

It's one thing allowing you to school at your dads alma-marter . Don't push it!

KWAME:

Alright, your wish is always my command.

( They had their breakfast and headed out )

HELENA:

Call me when you need anything darling, I've spoken to your school proprietor.

KWAME:

I don't want special treatments mom, don't forget the reason why I've decided to school there.

HELENA:

Yeah I do remember son, but still call.

Helena kissed Kwame's forehead and entered her car. When Kwame arrived in his new school, teaching was already on going. He went to the proprietor's office. He entered without knocking.

PROPRIETOR:

Where are your manners fool? Must I teach you how to knock? I don't think I've seen you around, which class are you in?

KWAME:

I'm Kwame Ofori LeBrone sir, Mrs Helena Ofori's son.

PROPRIETOR:

Oh so sorry, take your sit please.

KWAME:

I don't think sitting is necessary sir, I'd like to be taken to my class.

PROPRIETOR:

Yeah sure sure

( He said standing up )

But please can you not tell your mom how I spoke to you just now, I didn't know it was you.

KWAME:

My class now please.

And of course I won't tell my mom.

The proprietor took kwame to his class. Mr Jude the maths teacher was teaching when they entered, the students stood up to greet them. Kwame who was scanning the room didn't realize the proprietor was talking to him.

PROPRIETOR:

LeBrone!

( kwame turned immediately and looked at the proprietor )

KWAME:

Kwame please, that's the name I prefer.

PROPRIETOR:

Okay, kindly introduce yourself to your new class mates.

KWAME:

I'm Kwame your new mate. Sir please why isn't there any air conditioner in this class please? The fans are also not functioning. Learning is going to be difficult in this space.

JAMES:

Exactly what I've been thinking about.

( James entered with his school bag behind him )

PROPRIETOR:

And you! why are you coming to school by this time?

( He said looking at James angrily )

JAMES:

You know I always help my mom sell in the market before coming to school. If not, how else do you want me to get money to feed myself?

PROPRIETOR:

Will you shut up! you poor little thing.

How disrespectful.

( James bowed down his head with his eyes getting teary )

KWAME:

My dad was also a poor thing but he ended up getting you the car you're driving now. I think you should apologize to…

THE STUDENTS IN THE CLASS:

James, his name is James.

KWAME:

Yeah apologize to James, you never know what the future holds.

( The proprietor was obviously not happy with what Kwame was doing )

PROPRIETOR:

Sorry James, I hope you buy me a plane in the near future.

( The whole class burst into laughter )

MR JUDE:

Take your sit James, it would be great if you fill up the space beside James Kwame. He sits alone.

( The two boys went to sit, the proprietor left the class )

JAMES:

Thanks but no thanks new guy, I don't need your saving.

KWAME:

Kwame.

Nice meeting you too.
