Chapter 1 - Prologue - Chapter 0.5: Perseverance of the Weak

Tick!

"Sans."

The voice of a woman woke me up. I felt disoriented, as if I had just woken up from a long nap and my body was still trying to turn back on.

"Sans, do you hear me?"

I kept my eyes shut even after I had fully woken up, as I got lost in thought. It wasn't a voice I was familiar with, and I didn't remember anyone I knew with a voice like hers.

"Sans… Wake up!"

That same voice shouted at me. This time, I had decided to open my eyes and discover however it was shouting at me to wake up.

However, after I opened them, I was faced with a strange situation. I was in a void, composed of nothing. It wasn't simply all black, it was nothing. Just, nothing.

Tock!

"Oh, good. You woke up. Sans, you can hear me clearly right?"

In front of me, was a transparent red soul. Based on how it wasn't upside-down, it was a human's soul.

But how is there a human soul in front of me? Asgore always keeps them stored somewhere. But, based on my situation, I figured it wasn't anything normal. But I won't figure anything out by simply guessing.

Deciding to stop theorizing based on the very miniscule amount of information he has, I decide to ask the soul in front me.

"...Who are you?"

"Finally you are answering. Good, I don't have much time to explain, I can introduce myself later. Sans, you have to absorb my soul."

Tick!

Based on the urgency in her voice, I could guess there was something going on. Maybe there was someone going after her?

No, that doesn't explain the place we are in.

As I looked around, I noticed something I hadn't before. Hundreds and hundreds of upside-down white souls with cracks all over them were slowly drifting forward.

W-what?! What is this? How didn't I notice this before?

That voice spoke to me again in irritation.

"Sans, are you not listening to me? I told you to absorb my soul!"

I decided to reply to her in order to get more information. "Oh, yes. I heard you the first time, but… could you tell me what is happening, and what is this place?"

She paused for a second before answering me. "...I'm not exactly sure what this place is. But from what I've seen until now, this place is where all the souls go after they shatter. Some kind of afterlife, I guess…?"

Afterlife? I didn't know there was such a thing… but that does explain a lot of things. But that doesn't explain why there are only monster souls here, and so few human souls.

Further away from me, the white souls, and the voice speaking to me, were a few human souls of various colors, drifting away at the same speed as the monster souls. They were far less numbered than the monster souls. That only served to further confuse me.

"I see. But why are there so many monster souls in here?"

"The reason for that is why I'm here, Sans. Listen, there is someone repeatedly killing all monsters over and over again. And there's no sign of them ever stopping it."

Someone killing us over and over again?! How is that possible?

Of course, I couldn't help but be shocked. It isn't possible to kill something over and over again, because, obviously, after you die, you die. Unless…!

I had suspicions that there was someone messing with the time-line, after seeing the reports of it jumping left and right, but I could never figure out who it was. It seems I can finally uncover that mess.

Tock!

She started talking in even more urgency. "That person is a human that fell into the underground 'recently', and they have the power to RESET."

"By "Reset", you mean the power to turn back time?" I inquired.

"Yes! And there is no way for me to stop it by myself, and that is why I need your help, Sans."

She ushered me in urgency. "Now, absorb my soul, and I can help you in stopping this mass genocide. You will be able to retain your memories of each reset, and you will get my memories of all these resets."

Why does she specifically want me to help her? And how many resets were there?

Tick!

"Listen, lady. I don't think I can help you with such a big thing. I'm just a simple skeleton. I make puns, I work at my sentry, and help my bro with making his puzzles. I think you should ask someone else for help."

"God dammit, do you think I haven't tried? Of course I did, there's no way I would ask such a skeleton like you for help on such a dangerous and difficult thing." Anger and frustration were laced in her voice.

"But it didn't know. I don't know why, maybe it is because of the rules of this world, but no one ever answered. No one…"

"But you were different. You were the only one who answered. So, it will be you. Now, come on, Sans. Absorb my soul, and let's save this forsaken world."

Tock!

Crack!

"Sans, absorb my soul, quick! The world is almost resetting!"

This human… doesn't even explain things correctly, and expects me to do such a difficult job.

However, my bro, and all my friends, are being killed over and over again.

So, I should at least try, just this once. To save them all.

"Fine, human. But you better explain things after this." I answered with slight irritation.

"How should I absorb your soul?" It was something I had never done after all.

"Just get closer to me and touch me with your soul, since you don't have a physical body."

It was only then that I noticed my situation, and that I looked just like the other monster souls near me. My soul was filled with cracks.

How does this work? It really felt like I had a body.

I headed in her direction, and before I got into contact with her soul, she spoke to me.

"Thank you, Sans. I hope you forgive me for asking such a difficult thing to you. Once we get there, I'll properly explain things to you. See you later…"

I absorbed her soul. And everything faded to black.

Crack!

Shatter!

And time had reset once again.
