Chapter 5 - Chapter 4: Doomed from the start (4)

(Hi please read author notes)

A strange gray fog covered the vision in Snowdin. Small particles of dust could be seen in it when light reflected on them.

Inside of that fog, the sound of metal clashing could be heard.

"Cover that area! Don't let the human escape the encirclement!" A monster clad in steel armor shouted.

A short-haired human clad with orange gloves danced through the area like a leaf carried by the wind, going through each monster, kicking and punching them.

It was as if there was no fog at all to them.

Each hit left a dent on the monster's armor, as if it were made out of nothing but wet cardboard.

One of the armor-clad monsters sliced his sword forward in a wide arc. The human ducked, and counterattacked, spinning and sweeping at their legs, making them fall hard onto the ground from the weight of the armor.

Taking advantage of that, the human jumped and did a heel kick into the monster's head, pulverizing it, killing the monster.

"Dogaressa!"

"Yes!"

2 monsters jumped forward. They were dog monsters called Dogamy and Dogaressa. They were a couple, and also brothers in arms, fighting together in a war.

They went into both sides of the human, bringing their weapons backwards, in preparation for a joint attack.

Once they both got ready, they dashed forward once again, intending to cut the human's head off.

They swung their war axes at the same time, but the human stayed still.

Then, suddenly, a bright red glow came off from the human's skin. There were runes engraved into their skin. It illuminated through the fog, making the human stand out like a lightbulb shining in the darkness.

But that didn't matter.

They disappeared from the spot, appearing behind Dogaressa.

Splat!

Dogaressa's head exploded like a balloon from the human's strength, spreading blood and brain matter everywhere, which then quickly disappeared into dust.

Dogamy looked in shock. She had no time to react. He couldn't protect her. He failed as a husband.

These were all thoughts that ran through his head.

Yet, he couldn't muster the strength to fight anymore. It was as if a piece of him had gone away, that had turned into dust, alongside his lover. He could only fall into his knees as his legs buckled.

He shivered as he looked at his wife's dust, and the only thing he could do was cry while crouching, holding onto her dust with his hands.

But war didn't spare anyone. Taking advantage of Dogamy lost fighting spirit, the human whipped his head away with a kick, giving him the same destiny as his wife.

And there, Dogamy died alongside his wife, his dust as close as the last time they hugged.

Just one last hug.

The battle continued, but the monsters couldn't hold on much longer. Their numbers were slowly dwindling.

But they had served their purpose, to delay the human, to hold on as much as possible, to let the citizens escape, so they could evacuate into safety.

They had already prepared for death, they knew they would die in this losing battle. By becoming a Royal Guard, they promised to sacrifice their lives for the well-being of their people, and they'd be damned if they broke it.

No one regretted a thing.

The human coughed blood as he crushed the head of the last knight under his foot. "Shit. Who knew I'd have to use these runes to kill them."

He clenched his hand, and gritted his teeth in anger. "I can't believe I had to use runes on these WEAKLINGS!"

"However called these annoying knights, I'll find you, and I'll make you wish you were dead!!" Frisk shouted loudly into the air.

"Tsk. This fog is annoying. Who would expect, these creatures actually have a certain level of intelligence. To develop a fog machine and use it in an encirclement." He said in a mocking tone.

He sarcastically said. "How smart of them."

Frisk exited the fog. He had finally reached Snowdin town, but no one was there any longer.

As he entered a nearby shop however, he noticed something on the door when he opened it halfway.

A thin string was tied to the door from the inside, visible only due to the light's reflection on it.

Suspicious, there's no way they'd make such a simple trap that even a toddler could deal with.

Closing the door, he picked up something. A hissing sound could be heard from within the building.

…! Shit!

The human ran away from the building, and jumped.

Just as he did, the building exploded. Debris flew everywhere, fire burst into life, spreading itself, consuming the wooden building quickly.

Wood splinters stuck itself into the human's skin, digging deep into it and drawing blood that drew thin lines of red on his skin.

Fuck… Since when were they so ingenious? To resort to such dirty tricks…

They really knew how to make someone angry. But I'm not worried. If I die or not, I'll come back. Such was the power of immortality.

He chuckled. "That doesn't mean I'll just let this pass. For however prepared this gift for me, I'll be sure to give you an equal, if not better one."

After all, you pay back good deeds 10 fold, and evil deeds 100 fold!

Frisk couldn't help but chuckle to himself after thinking up such a silly saying.

"Gregor. How many survived?"

"...No one, captain."

Undyne bit her lips in frustration, making blood drip from her mouth.

More and more Royal Guards were dying in this battle to only a single human.

Was the difference between us so big?

Humans and monsters. The difference in power wasn't just in their numbers, but also physical strength and magic.

Humans had actual physical bodies, leading to them being more capable in certain aspects than monsters, and they could use multiple types of magic, unlike monsters who could only use one type of magic all their life.

Is this even a winnable battle?

Undyne felt hopeless, something she never thought she would feel.

But how can I give up, and lose myself in despair? My comrades depend on me, my people depend on me. How can I give up this easily in face of a strong opponent?

Sans said for me to bait the human to Hotlands, to bring them there so we could do an ambush.

I can't falter, monsterkind's survival depends on this!

Determined, Undyne sat up from her seat inside a barrack. Stepping out of the barrack, she yelled out orders for the knights in the camp.

"Soldiers, prepare yourselves for battle! The human will soon arrive in Waterfall! Grab your equipment and sit ready in position, I'll give the signal when the time is ready."

Hearing the orders, the soldiers yelled out a confirmation, and started their preparations for what was to come.

Undoing the tents, and storing their gear in their backpacks, heading to where they would wait for the human.

Some chatted with their friends, as a way to distract themselves from their thoughts. Others stared at pictures of loved ones and smiled somberly. While a rare few only stared into the air.

Someone walked up to Undyne. It was Mero, vice-captain of the Royal Guard. "Undyne… I fear that the knights will lack too much morale for this fight. I think it would be for the best to give them a speech"

"A speech…" Undyne murmured.

Even though I've been captain of the Royal Guards for quite some time, I've never ever done a speech. It was because it was peaceful times, leading to no need for war, making there have no opportunity, or necessity to boost the Royal Guard's morale.

It will be my first time, will I be up for the job…?

Undyne gathered her courage, and started.

"Soldiers. Knights of the Royal Guard. Today, we will fight against a monster, not like any other. They are the enemy of monsterkind, who takes enjoyment out of taking the lives out of our innocent people. We will die, yes. But we will die fighting for the protection, and the survival of our species!"

She shouted loudly, her voice reverberating through the camp.

She slammed her chest with her fist. "So! If you don't have the courage to sacrifice your life, leave! The battlefield is not for you, and we do not need cowards who would rather save their asses!"

Her speech reverberated in the heads of the knights. Even though some had the thought of deserting and running away, they quickly shut off the idea.

Her speech had motivated them, to sacrifice themselves, to become the heroes of monsterkind.

They clenched their weapons in anger, thinking about how much dust has been spilled in this nonsensical, and sudden genocide.

Who could know that this kind of thing would happen suddenly?

They steeled their resolve in their heart. Death no longer mattered, for the glory and hope of monsterkind lay in them.

Sans felt lost. After asking Alphys for what she knew about DT, she revealed everything to him. About the failed experiments, the Amalgamates.

Monsters melt after having DT injected into them. How am I gonna take the Reset from the human's hand this way…?

But why does that happen? Is it because monsters don't have a physical body like humans have, therefore we can't handle much DT? So does that mean humans can resist a larger quantity then?

Alphys told me she took her DT from the human souls, so is the DT stored in their soul or body?

No, rather, the important question is: Why do humans have so much DT?

Is that the reason that they far overpower us in power?

There's another thing. According to legend, when a monster absorbs a human soul, they become extremely strong, enough to win a fight against multiple humans at once. So, is that boost in strength the DT from the human's soul?

That must mean the human soul serves as a sort of stabilizer for the monster, so they won't melt and maintain their form.

…!

Then, I realized. I already had absorbed a human soul.

Taking out my soul, I saw that my soul had a large, hollow red soul around it. There, my soul laid in the center.

Indeed. Even though she's already dead, her soul is still intact, although barely. Does that mean I can inject DT safely into myself?

I called out to Alphys. "Alphys, how much DT do you still have left?"

"N-not much. But why do you need it?"

Instead of explaining, I simply showed her my soul.

It doesn't matter if she knows it or not, as she will forget it anyway if the time-line resets. And if I somehow win this in this time-line, I'm sure she will keep my secrets sealed shut.

She had an expression of utter shock, and confusion. "W-what?! Sans, how did you absorb a h-human soul? Don't tell me you-!" She put her hands in her face in horror at what she thought I had done.

"I didn't steal a soul from Asgore, Alphys. Don't worry."

"Then how did you…? No, I'm sorry. I won't ask you about your secrets. I-if you stole it or not, I'll assume it was for the best."

I simply smiled at that. Although Alphys was someone full of insecurities, she was someone I could rely on. Though, even after I told her I didn't steal it, she's still misunderstanding things.

But I can't blame her, I would have thought the same, though it's still bugging me slightly.

"I have a theory that I have a high resistance for the effects with DT because of this soul. Please gather all of the DT that you have collected. I'll take full responsibility if it all fails."

Alphys simply gulped down her saliva and nodded, walking away to do what I had asked her to.

Papyrus… Please stay safe.
