David's old friends who lived in different cities asked him if they could hang out and meet in Amsterdam, and he agreed. They decided to meet at a restaurant in Amsterdam.
"Hey!" One of his friends called out to him. David walked over to his friends and sat down on an empty chair.
The names of his friends are Wessel, Niklas, and Joakim.
Wessel is a Dutchman, he was born and raised in the Netherlands. He has wavy brown hair, and he has hazel eyes.
Niklas is half Dutch and half German, just like David. He was born in Cologne, Germany, and raised in Belgium before living in the Netherlands. He has dark blond hair and blue eyes.
Joakim is Norwegian; as they know, he has no Dutch blood. He just lived there; he had bright hair and bright eyes, like the average Nordic.
They have been friends since junior high school. Actually, it's not just them, but there are 3 other friends. Unfortunately, people come and go, and now it's just them.
"How are you?" asked Niklas
"Good. I'm just busy helping my parents clean our great-grandfather's house. We've been leaving it for years." David said.
"We can help you if you want." Niklas said.
"No, you don't have to." David said.
"I just resigned from my job, so I'm free now," Wessel said.
"What, why? I think you love your work." David said.
"I'm bored. I would like to too resign." Wessel said.
"Hopefully, you don't become homeless after this. I won't let you stay in my house." Joakim said.
"I decided to look for a company that allows employees to work from home." Wessel patted Joakim on the shoulder. "I don't even want to stay in your house, you rarely clean your house."
Joakim rolled his eyes. "I'm lazy."
"So, why don't you take care of the house?" Asked Niklas to David suddenly
"I did, but my parents wanted to sell the house or renting out the house, because we couldn't take care of that house. Since my grandparents passed away, we have abandoned the house. Also, I live in Utrecht now. I can't go to De Rijp just for cleaning the house every month." David said.
"I don't think house prices will be low, because this is an old house." Niklas said.
"Yes, the house was built in the early 1900s. It looked like a haunted house when I arrived." David said.
Bandung, 1932.
Tobias studied with his friends, and all of them were Dutch or a mix of Dutch and pribumi. Werner didn't want to bother them, so he went to play with Kirana. Werner walks around the village with Kirana. The road in the village is muddy because it rained last night. He held her hand, not wanting her to fall or slip.
Werner smiled at her. "It's hard to get in here."
"It rained last night, that's why the road is muddy. Be careful." Kirana said.
"Where are we going?" asked Werner
"We are going to go to the lake near here." Kirana said.
They arrived at the lake. She made a boat from a banana leaf.
"Whoa, it's so cool!" Werner is holding the boat. "How did you make it? Please, teach me!"
Kirana smiles and takes another banana leaf and small tree branches, she teaches Werner how to make a boat from a banana leaf.
"It's simple, you can make it." Kirana said. She showed him how to make it.
"I never know if we can make boat from banana leaf." Werner chuckles. "This is so cool. You're really creative."
They played until the afternoon. Kirana walked Werner back to his house because she was afraid he might get lost if she let him went back home by himself.
"We have to play Kirana more often." Werner said.
"Uh, I can't promise you....." Kirana said.
Werner frowned, "Why?"
"I've told you about Dutch and Pribumi things, right?" Kirana said.
"But I'm not like that. I've talked to my mom about you, but she's fine with it. Not all Dutch people are like that." Werner said. He was a little offended by Kirana for talking about Dutch people like that. Not all of them are racist.
"I didn't mean to talk badly about Dutch, i'm half Dutch too. It's just... Uh, I'm sorry. I will try to play with you more often." Kirana said.
Werner's face softened slightly. "I want you to promise me that."
"Alright, I promise." Kirana said.
Werner enters his house, and it's already empty, which means Tobias's friends have go back home.
"Where have you been?" asked Tobias
"Uh, playing with Kirana." Werner said.
"That girl again?" Tobias said. He frowned. "Why not with Ruben?"
"he was too far away, too, I didn't exactly put his house in," said Werner
"You can ask Joko to take you there." Tobias said.
"But I don't want to." Werner said.
Ever since Tobias went to school, he had been friends with the Dutch kids in the school and became hostile towards pribumi. They may have brainwashed him to hate pribumi, and Werner doesn't know why.
"You don't have to be like that. After all, they are the pribumi of this land, we are here to takes their resources. Aren't you the one who said that to our parents? Why did you suddenly change?" Werner said. Werner was really disappointed with his brother.
Tobias looked surprised when Werner said that. He wanted to answer, but no words came out of his mouth. Werner was right; he was the one who said that. Tobias walks away to his bedroom and lock the door.
Werner spent most of his time at school or playing with Kirana. Ruben often came and joined them, but Ruben's house was quite far from his home, even though they were at the same school.
Werner didn't really talk to Tobias after that day. He was grateful that Ruben wasn't like that, even though he had lived in this land longer than he and Tobias did. He secretly hopes that Tobias will turn into his old self.
