Chapter 6 - "The girl I met in Bandung" 2

Sorry if there are mistake in words, grammar, punctuation, etc.

Werner and Kirana were sitting under a tree. Werner looked at him. There was something he had wanted to ask.

"I want to be a father and have a beautiful family, you can be a mother." Werner suddenly said.

Kirana looked surprised, but her face softened, "We're just kids!"

"I know. It's just crossed in my mind suddenly."

"Also, we're different. You have to marry a beautiful Dutch woman!"

He never thought about those things. He thought he could marry any woman as long as they loved each other. "Well, I can marry any girl I like, right? In that case, it wouldn't hurt if I married you when we were older." Werner said.

"Yes, but we are different."

"What do you mean differently?" Werner frowned

"I'm just a pribumi and you are Dutch. I have heard so many Dutch people say that they are too superior for us. So you have to marry a Dutch woman, too."

"I am my own person. I can make any decision if I want to. Also, you're half Dutch."

"What about the children? They will have pribumi blood. I've seen so many people look down on mixed blood just because they're not fully Dutch or pribumi who see them as a traitor." Kirana said.

"We can live in the Netherlands. I can take you to the Netherlands."

"They will just hate me if someone like me lives there."

Werner sighs. "Whatever. I don't care about them." Werner look at Kirana again. "I've wanted to ask you something a long time ago. Where is your father? Isn't he's Dutch?" asked Werner.

Kirana looked stunned, she looked down, "He and my mother separated, and he married a Dutch woman. They live in the Netherlands now."

Werner looked guilty for asking about those things. He hugged her. "I'm sorry I asked about that."

"It's okay. I don't really remember him or his fac, he left when I was 5 years old. I asked where my father was now, but my mother always said that she didn't know and said if he already passed away. But some people say he is still alive and he betrayed my mother." Kirana said.

"That's bad..." Werner felt sorry for her; she was a beautiful girl, and she didn't deserve it. How can a person who is a husband and father leave his own family?

"People say my father betrayed my mother for a Dutch woman. That's why my mother really hated the Dutch. But wherever he is now, I hope my father is okay, and the gossip is not true..."

"Yes, I hope your father is fine."

"I chose to lose my father because he died rather than because he cheated on my mother."

"I won't be like your father. My father always told me to be a good person."

Kirana smiled at him, "You're a good person. But, we are just children."

"It's you, I'm almost a teenager!"

"But we are still kids!"

"Okay. We are still children. I understand, but don't forget that I'm almost a teenager."

"Why do you really want to be a teenager?"

"We can get more freedom. Also, I can't wait to grow up and become handsome man."

Kirana giggled. "Yes, you're going to be a handsome man."

"I bet you will fall in love with me." Werner is teasing her.

"That won't happen!" Kirana yelling, she chuckles because that sounds ridiculous.

"Really? Let's see."

It's Sunday morning, and Tobias and Werner are sitting on the floor in the living room. Today is very hot. That's why they sit on the floor. Joko suddenly came, he held a letter.

"Maneer, there's a letter." Joko said.

Tobias walked around and picked up the letter. "From who?" Ask him.

"I don't know how. But it was from the Netherlands. I'll go and clean up the garden again." Joko bow towards him and walk away.

This is a letter from the Netherlands. Tobias read the sender. It's from Emma! Tobias walks towards Werner and show him the letter. Werner were very excited. They sat down on the sofa and opened the letter.

Den Haag, 1932.

To my grandsons, Tobias and Werner.

Hello, my dear, this is me, Emma Isabella Meijer. How are you? I hope you are all doing well.

My dear, I hope your life in the Dutch East Indies is good. The food there is very good. I miss my time in Batavia. My favorite food is Soto and Pork Satay. I would go back to Batavia if I could. But I'm really old now, I can't go there because it takes a long time to get to Dutch East Indies. Please, send my love to Batavia.

My house is empty without you two. Usually, you two would come to my house with your friends to eat my cake or cookies. I still bake cakes and cookies, but not as much as before. Sometimes Jakob, William, Dirk, and Joshua would come here. But not as often when the two of you still live there. Milou often go to your house and wait for you to return. That made me have to go and pick him up. He looks sad, and sometimes he doesn't want to eat his food if I don't let him go and check the house.

The grass grows long, and I need to hire someone to mow the grass. So the house doesn't look like a haunted house. Your friends said they miss you both.

My dear, please send me a letter if you have time. I'm looking forward to.... From the two of you. Please tell your parents if i miss them so much. Normally, Julia would come and cook dinner with me. But now, I rarely cook dinner, only Geertje will cook dinner. She said i'm too old to do such a thing.

Love,

Emma I. Meijer.

Tobias and Werner's eyes were teary. They really miss home. Tobias closed the letter, his eyes teary; he rarely cried. But the letter from Emma made her want to cry.

"I miss Milou," Werner said.

"I miss Milou too," Tobias said. "I hope he's fine, and when we get back to the Netherlands, he's still alive." Tobias said. "I will be the one who keep the letter."

Werner nods. "Okay, you can keep it."
