Werner was lying on the floor while his brother did his homework at the table.
He yawned and looked to his brother. "I miss Emma and her pastries." Werner said.
Tobias stopped writing. "Yes, me too." Tobias said. "Usually, we'd go to his house just to eat all her pastries."
Joko suddenly came and opened the door. Both Tobias and Werner looked at the door. Ms. Ella comes and enters the house with Kirana, and she helps Ms. Ella carry the books for today's lesson.
Werner and Kirana study with Ms. Ella. Ms. Ella taught them patiently. They learn about mathematics. They study for hours. Werner glances at Ms. Ella.
"Ms. Ella?" Werner called her.
"Yes, Werner?" said Ms. Ella.
"Were you born here or in the Netherlands?" asked Werner
"I was born in the Netherlands and moved here at the age of 4. I lived in Batavia and moved to Bandung when I was 18." She said.
"Have you returned to the Netherlands?"
"Yes, I went back to the Netherlands several times."
Werner nodded. "I miss the Netherlands." Werner said
The next day, Kirana and Werner are walking in the garden of Werner's house. Werner glances at Kirana occasionally. He smiles at Kirana.
"You want to sit on the swing?" Ask Werner.
Kirana nodded. "Yes."
They walk to the tree swing near the garden. It's a swing that Joko made for Werner. Werner let Kirana sit on the swing. He is sitting on the ground, writes something in his diary.
"What did you write?" ask Kirana
"It's a secret." Said Werner.
Werner covers his diary from Kirana. He wrote while looking towards Kirana.
Kirana is one of my best friends. She is so beautiful and sweet. I really like her. Werner wrote that in his book. He smiled amusingly at Kirana, who was curious about what he wrote.
"What did you write? Why are you staring at me?" asked Kirana.
"I just want to write about my daily life," Werner said.
Kirana snorted. "Oh." She's pouting.
Werner is just laughing. "You look like a duck!"
"No!" Kirana slapped his hand a little.
"Ow ow, you're abusing me!" Werner said.
Tobias looked at them from his room. He had felt hatred for pribumi since he had befriended Dutch kids at school, but there were also those who defended the natives. But lately he has been thinking whether he is bad or not, because they are the ones who hitchhike to live on the land of pribumi and take their natural wealth.
He laughed when he saw Werner trying to cover his diary from Kirana. He knew that Werner often wrote about Kirana in his books. Tobias often silently reads Werner's diary. Tobias knows if Werner has a crush on Kirana.
At night, Hendrik comes home. He's returning home with his colleague, Hans Koopman. Hans Koopman is a Dutch-German man. He has a half-Dutch and half-Pribumi wife, Anggun Koopman, and a daughter named Nova Claire Koopman.
Hans smiled at Tobias and Werner.
"Introduce these two sons of mine, Tobias and Werner." Hendrik said.
Tobias and Werner greet Hans. Hans smiled. "You have two handsome boys, you're very lucky. I have a daughter named Nova, i will introduce her someday." Hans said.
Hendrik and Hans sat in the living room, the table was full of documents, and they were talking about something serious. Tobias and Werner could hear what they were talking about, but they pretended not to listen to him. They just kept quiet and sat on the stairs.
"I heard that Adinda, the wife of Diederik Jansen, works here. Is that true?" Asked Hans.
Hendrik nodded. "Yes, that's right. You know Diederik?" asked Hendrik.
"Yes, I know him, but we are not close. I heard he left his wife and married another woman in the Netherlands." Hans said. "But to be honest, i don't really believe the rumours. I know that he loves his wife and children even though many people underestimate him for marrying a pribumi woman." Hans said.
Hendrik nodded understandingly. "Do you think there is another reason why he left his family in Bandung?"
"What I know is that Diederik's parents did not agree if he wanted to marry a pribumi. Because his brother, Twan Jansen, died. He committed suicide due to a broken heart. Pribumi woman that he loved married someone else because the woman's parents did not agree if she marry a Dutchman, they didn't want people to see her as a traitor for marrying a colonizer." Hans said.
"Really? I never knew about it. People just say that her husbands are cheating and married to another woman, that's impossible for someone like him." Hendrik said
"I don't believe the rumors. Even though we're not that close, i know that he will not betray his wife and children just like that." Hans said.
Tobias and Werner accidentally overheard their father's conversation with his friend. They didn't understand what they were talking about, what was clear was that they were talking about Kirana and her father. Tobias and Werner look at each other. Tobias shrugs and goes to his bedroom. Werner is still curious, but he decides to follow Tobias and go to his own bedroom. He can't stop thinking about that. Maybe he should ask Kirana about her father? But he knows Kirana would not like his question.
