Chapter 8 - Ch.8

A violent sound came, and the helicopter shook and trembled, slamming hard onto the ground of the Arklay Mountains. Countless rocks and dirt flew up, and the powerful jolt almost threw everyone out. But luckily, they all held on tightly to the handles. The helicopter skidded across the muddy ground, creating a huge rut, before finally coming to a stop.

The front of the helicopter was crushed and mangled, and the front window glass was shattered. It looked horrific, but miraculously, no one was injured. To prevent the helicopter from exploding, Captain Enrico immediately shouted and ordered all the Bravo Team members to get out of the helicopter.

At this moment, the entire Bravo Team was in the deep forest of the Arklay Mountains. In the pitch-black night, they couldn't tell which direction they were going. They could only rely on the dim light of their "nuclear-powered" flashlights to illuminate the path ahead. The sound of insects filled the air.

It wasn't the cheerful chirping of a summer night, but a rather eerie sound. They could even hear the roars of wild beasts in the distance, which sent a chill down their spines.

"Beep, beep, beep..."

"Captain, we have a problem," said the blonde-haired Richard, the communications officer.

"The radio is out. We can't contact headquarters. I think it's because the environment in the Arklay Mountains is too complex, and the radio signal is too weak. We'll have to find a higher ground to contact headquarters!"

Everyone slowly got out of the helicopter. Richard, the communications officer, quickly picked up his communication equipment and tried to call for help. Unfortunately, the radio could be used for team communication, but the signal was too weak to reach headquarters.

The main reason was that the Arklay Mountains were too complex, with dense forests that made it difficult to connect to the Raccoon City Police Department headquarters. However, they could still use the walkie-talkies to communicate with each other.

This meant their path for backup was cut off. It was a classic horror game opening, starting with a situation where they were running out of supplies and were stuck between a rock and a hard place. But luckily, Javier was well-prepared.

"Find a higher ground..."

"That's too much of a hassle. Let's just start the mission and search as we go. Don't worry about backup. The S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team is also investigating the Arklay Mountains tonight. They just have fewer people, so they're a bit behind. We'll start our mission now and meet up with them later," Enrico said, shaking his head at Richard's suggestion. He didn't want to waste time looking for higher ground. He figured the Alpha Team would arrive soon, and they could just ride their helicopter out. He decided it was better to start investigating the Arklay Mountains first.

"According to our previous plan, Javier and Rebecca, you two will go to the Ecliptic Express to search for survivors. The tracks should be nearby. Just follow them when you find them. Be careful and stay alert. Take your walkie-talkies with you. If you run into anything, let Richard know. Even if we can't contact headquarters, we can still communicate with each other!"

"The rest of you, follow me. We're going into the mountains to investigate...!"

Enrico gave his orders, but as he was about to leave, Javier felt a little bad and called out to his soon-to-be-dead teammates.

"Captain Enrico, I have a lot of ammo in my backpack, including shotgun and pistol rounds, and grenades. You should take some with you, just in case."

Out of the kindness of his heart, Javier took off his backpack, opened the buckles, and showed everyone what was inside. The top layer had some medicine and food, and underneath were boxes of bullets and five or six grenades.

What was even more ridiculous was that Enrico, with his sharp eyes, noticed a large green banana on the side of the backpack. It was a disassembled RPG rocket launcher. The green banana-shaped rocket was on one side, and the wooden launcher was on the other.

When he saw this, Enrico's face turned even darker.

Well, well, well, Enrico thought, unable to hold back a surprised gasp. You really took a lot of stuff from the police department, didn't you? All these bullets and grenades are one thing, but an RPG rocket launcher, too? Are you really going to fight terrorists in the Arklay Mountains?

"That's enough!"

"You can play with that gear yourself. Just don't come back with a wild boar you blasted with a rocket launcher and embarrass the department. I've seen cowards before, but I've never seen anyone so cowardly...!"

Enrico, who was about to accept Javier's offer out of goodwill, immediately refused. He couldn't help it; Javier's cowardly behavior was an insult to the S.T.A.R.S. image. If he had taken all that heavy equipment, he would have looked down on himself.

It wasn't just Captain Enrico. The other Bravo Team members also looked a little embarrassed. They all felt that Javier had gone a little too far this time.

Javier, on the other hand, just shook his head helplessly.

He put his backpack back on. As someone with a severe "fear of insufficient firepower," he knew that any danger came from not having enough firepower. Since his good teammates weren't going to take his gear, Javier was secretly happy. He still felt he didn't have enough.

"My apologies..."

"Sir, Rebecca and I will go and start the rescue mission now. I wish you all good luck. There are a lot of beasts in the Arklay Mountains, and I hope you won't hesitate to shoot and kill them the moment you see one!"

Finally, Javier didn't say anything else.

After a serious warning, he grabbed the little girl Rebecca and ran off into another part of the forest in the Arklay Mountains. Everyone would have to fend for themselves. He could only try to protect himself.

Seeing the two rookies, Javier and Rebecca, leave, Captain Enrico shook his head helplessly. Those two were a handful. He didn't hesitate, gave the order, and led the rest of the team into the deep woods with his handgun in hand.

On the other side of the forest, Rebecca and Javier walked together.

"Hey..."

"Javier, why did you bring so much gear and ammo? Are there really a lot of man-eating beasts in the Arklay Mountains?" Rebecca asked out of boredom. She was curious about why a slacker like Javier would be so cautious. Was there really something dangerous in the Arklay Mountains?

"Man-eating beasts?"

"Yes, there are a lot of them, and they're very ugly and terrifying. So, you have to be mentally prepared. When you see one, you must shoot it without hesitation!" Javier said with a playful smile, trying to scare her. He hoped she wouldn't be too scared when she saw a zombie. But judging by her performance in the original plot, that little girl's quick reflexes were actually very good.

But at that moment, "buzz..."

A buzzing sound came from Javier's mind, and he felt a wave of dizziness.

[5. Hidden mission: Obtain a sample of the Queen Leech T-virus. Reward: 80 points.]

[Note: After the Resident Evil 0 plot ends, you can open the merchant interface and purchase items for upgrades...]

A mechanical, electronic female voice sounded in his ears. Javier was not surprised. He was unusually calm. After all, this was the "infinite novice village." It was normal to have a merchant interface for upgrades. Otherwise, it would be difficult for a normal person to fight mutated zombies. There had to be some kind of reward, right?

Early on, the T-virus-mutated ordinary people could be dealt with by a person with a gun, but later on, with all the flying mutated viruses, it would be impossible to defend against them without upgrades. The merchant interface was necessary. The merchant would allow him to reasonably improve the perfection of the virus, but the abilities would be limited to those from the original world, so there would be nothing too overpowered. It would be a simple system, just like in the games, with a focus on weapon upgrades.
