Chapter 39: The Hidden Pearl
Victoria returned to her mansion the next evening.
She felt restless, still circling around Levius's words from the night before. She wanted air, distance from the palace.
When she entered, Ricardo was already waiting in her hall. He was standing near the window with a wine glass in hand.
The moment he saw her, he smiled and walked toward her.
"My clever daughter," he said, pulling her close and kissing her cheek. "I heard what you told Levius. You handled him well. I'm very proud."
Victoria smirked, though her eyes were on alert. "Proud?"
"Yes. You are finally learning how to use your place wisely. You kept him interested, and you made him talk. That's what matters."
She nodded but then tilted her chin. A thought slipped out before she could stop it. "Tell me something, Father."
"What is it?"
Her tone strictened. "Why did you cheat on Mother? With that woman. Nadeira's mother."
