Chapter 40: The Mirror
One thing Victoria liked was victory…
It rhymed with her name, and she always enjoyed tearing Nadeira down with any chance given.
And this was her opportunity now…use it against her, ruin whatever bond she had with the fish creatures, and make Nadeira suffer…
While sitting at the long table, moving her fork slowly across her plate, Victoria couldn't stop tapping her feet.
She wasn't hungry, and she couldn't stop thinking about the diary she had read, the pearl, and Barbara's portrait hidden in her room.
Victoria didn't dare speak of it, not to her father, and especially not to her mother.
Harriet entered the room with sharp steps, scanning Victoria before she even sat down. "You're eating too much bread again," Harriet said at once.
Victoria looked down. "It's only one piece."
"One piece today becomes two tomorrow. A queen cannot look soft. Do you want people whispering that Nadeira looks more graceful than you?"
