Chapter 13 - conversation

It was Wednesday, Elaine's two days of classes had been okay, apart from the Math punishment, she had been sleeping peacefully, lately, she haven't been hearing those weird noises or bone numbing fear.

"Agh! June yelled frustratedly, I hate P.E classes" she complained.

"Why?, I love them" Elaine said with a smile on her face, somehow enjoying June's plight.

"Look at me, do I look one bit fit?" She said dramatically spreading her arms awkwardly, and Elaine couldn't help but laugh.

"Do you know the only thing I like about this class?" She asked.

"What?"

"The sportswear"

"Seriously June?"

"Yes, it's very pretty and comfortable"

"No worries, me with her in no time, you'd begin to love P.E classes"

"I don't think that's possible"

"You'd see" Elaine said as they walked to the schools indoor sports floor, by now Elaine was already almost used to the school, it's beautiful architecture and students.

They were divided into two teams as they were going to play basketball, Elaine and Gwen were in the same team, June just sat down on the benches and chose to watch others play as she claimed she wasn't good at it, no matter how much Elaine pressured her, she refused, she even used her own words.

"You don't want to just stand on the sidelines and watch others have all the fun"

But June replied with,

"I won't stand and watch others have all the fun, I would be sitting" and that was when Elaine let her be.

So far Elaine's and Gwen's team were winning, surprisingly, they both made an amazing pair.

After the first half of the game, they went for a short break as they were already exhausted.

"We'd go grab us something" June said as she and Gwen were heading out of the gym floor to go to the dinning hall.

"I'd be in the rest room" she informed them.

"Ok".

Elaine was walking towards the girls restroom at the sports floor when she heard noises coming from the boys locker room, she wanted to ignore the noises and go on her way, but it had always been impossible to overlook.

She walked slowly towards the locker room, reaching there, the door was slightly ajar, she just looked from where she stood which was not very close to the door, but enough to see who was there.

It was Allan and another guy from their class, she knew him fairly as they had exchanged a few words yesterday, his name was Derek, from what she saw, Allan held Derek from the top of his sports jersey, and Derek and his back pinned on the locker, behind him, they seemed to be in a rough conversation, maybe a fist fight, as she was sure there was a line of blood on Derek's jaw. She was thinking of stepping in when she heard footsteps approaching, she instinctively ran to the opposite direction and hid behind the small closet or was it a storage room, the closet was so dark and uncomfortably hot, she stayed there for some time till the voices stopped and she was sure now it was just her in the locker room.

Opening the door, she she first peeked her head out of the door, to see someone's retreating back which she was sure wasn't Allan's, nor Derek, she stepped out and gasped for air as it was stuffy in there, it took sometime for her eyes to adjust to the light out here, before walking back to the sports floor where the others were.

"Where were you?" Gwen asked which left her speechless as she wasn't expecting Gwen to be the first person to talk to her.

"I...um-

"Forget, it's time for the second half" she said with a dismissive tone.

"Yeah, that was right it was just about the game" she scolded in her head.

The second half of the game went well as their team won, Elaine got a little popular because of her exceptional skill in basketball, the teacher had already left, but they just stayed back talking about that game.

"That was a nice game, you played so well Elaine" one of the girls complemented.

"Thanks"

"You're gonna stick to this team right?" another girl asked

"Yes" she answered.

"What a shame, you should have been placed in our team".

Elaine was still basking in the attention she was receiving, when it felt as though someone was staring at her, she looked around but didn't notice anyone, she was about to shrug it off, when she caught sight of one pair of grey eyes and freckle kissed face, staring at her, he was sitting down on a bench with his legs widely spraed, he was holding a bottle of water as he stared right back at her without blinking even though she was now aware that he was looking at her.

She quickly adverted her gaze and her body immediately tensed up as she could still feel his eyes trying to bore holes at her back, she started finding it hard to talk and one of the girls had to ask if she was alright.

"Yes I am, I'm just a little tired from the game" she answered her speech rushed.

"We should all head out now " one of the girls suggested and they all left the sports floor and Elaine could finally breathe.

As they were at the changing room, she couldn't help but wonder what that was about.

"Why was he staring at me like that?" She asked herself.

"Dis he know I was at the locker room?, so what of he did?, I didn't see anything I wasn't supposed to see, it's not like I can report to any teacher or staffs" she said talking to herself.

That night, Elaine stayed up late, solving Mr Steven's assignment, or was it a punishment, which was to be submitted on Friday.

"I should ask Kyle for help, since he was part the reason why I got into this mess, Agh!, he should have just let me sleep peacefully "

Elaine still wasn't used to this night power outage, she had to use her flashlight whenever she wanted to study past ten.

She was just staring at the papers not knowing what else to solve, she looked up and around her as if now her mind began registering the darkness and she began feeling scared, the hairs at the back of her neck stood, she let out a silent and shaky breath, as she tried to listen for any sounds, but there was nothing, it was just fear, living her flashlight on, she curled herself on the bed and eventually fell asleep not noticing the shadows that hovered above and around the room.
