Elaine just kept looking up at him, not knowing what to say or do as more tears flowed down her eyes.
"Are you alright?" He asked again, but she still didn't or couldn't say anything, she just kept looking up at him when he suddenly bent and grabbed her arms pulling her up, he held her by her wrist, as they walked towards a shade, she just let him lead the way while she followed like a broken doll.
They walked into the nearest building and stayed in an empty classroom, Elaine sat down on one of the chairs, while Allan casually leaned on a desk with his arms folded across his chest, they just stayed quiet listening to the heavy pitter patter of the rain, they stayed like that for minutes until Elaine calmed down and everything that had happened minutes ago started to feel surreal.
"Why was I crying?" She scolded in her head starting to feel embarrassed, she began playing with her fingers as her eyes kept darting to Allan and to the door.
"I..., I'm okay now" she said loud enough for him to hear.
"I don't remember asking" he stated not bothering to look away from the board, which added to the amount of discomfort she was already feeling plus the wet clothes.
"Sorry, i just meant that you can leave now, thanks"
"Leave to where?" He asked now turning to face her.
"Uh?" She asked, but he just kept looking at her, waiting for her to talk.
"I meant you could go back to whatever you were doing, or wherever you were going before you, you um..." Now she didn't know how to complete it.
"Before I saw a baby crying in the rain " he completed, making her bashful.
"I wasn't really crying " she said in a low voice looking down
"Yeah, you weren't " he said turning his focus back to the board and letting out an almost inaudible sigh.
"Well thank you" she said sincerely.
"What made you cry?" He suddenly asked taking her off guard.
"Uh...?" She asked as if wanting him to repeat himself, but he just kept staring at her and she had to conclude that he didn't like saying things twice.
"It was nothing" she answered.
"That's not an answer, one just doesn't decide to cry in the rain out of the blue"
"I just thought about something I missed so much, and I got really emotional " she lied smoothly, but the way he turned to look at her sent the message that he knew what she said was a lie.
"You were at the locker room" he stated, changing the topic as if it never happened.
"Uh..., no I wasn't" she lied again.
"I didn't ask, he said standing straight and facing her completely, I said you were at the boys locker room yesterday" he said his eyes dead cold, which made her visibly tense up.
"What if I was?" She decided to take a different approach since lying wasn't really doing it for her today.
"You'll see" was all he said
"Ehn...?, w... What's there to see?" She asked her mind already creating different scenarios. But what answered her was silence, as if he didn't hear her say a word.
"Why do you always say weird things, that never make sense to me?" She finally asked.
Again he didn't even bother to look at her talk more of answering her, he just walked to one of the chairs behind her and and sat down, he took off his sweater that was damp and she looked away for no reason.
"Foolish" she heard him say mockingly.
"Did you say something?" She turned around to ask wanting to be sure, but as always he ignored and rest his head on the table facing the opposite direction, she also then rest he read facing away too, and in no time her eyes closed in slumber.
Allan Just rested his head on the desk with his eyes open, he turned his head and looked at where Elaine was sleeping away from him, knowing she was already fast asleep, he stood up walked towards the door ready to leave when he suddenly stopped walking and turned to her direction, from where he stood, he could see her face clearly, he just stood there staring at her, he then walked to where she was sleeping and bent his head close to hers and looked at her featured closely, her olive colored skin, long scanty lashes, round lips, and her round face.
"Elaine Randolph he said in a low voice his breathing fanning her, so many obvious lies" he said to Himself with an unreadable expression, he straightened up and left the classroom.
*******
Waking up, Elaine looked around the classroom, but she was the only there, the rain had stopped, but the atmosphere still carried the loneliness left behind .
She just sat down alone for sometime, as if waiting for the sleep ti clear from her head before leaving.
