*Thane's Pov*
I ran across the edges of the roof with as much care as I could, my frame blending perfectly in the night. I slithered forward, my movements, fluid and soundless. I might not be good at chess but things like this were my domain.
I jumped off the roof, catching the edge of a window with my gloved hands. For a moment, I dangled across the window but soon enough, I caught myself and pulled myself into the building.
"The night is still young, however, we still need to move very fast," I heard the disgusting feminine voice of the one whom I was trailing.
"Ooof, Athena. There is no need to rush my dear. We already won, drinking a few pints of beer won't derail us. We did it, we deserve a little celebration after all the hard work," yet another disgusting voice said. This time the voice belonged to Drago Hudavik, my actual target of the day.
I hadn't calculated that the lady would be with him today and I already knew most of my plans would go off the rope with her appearance but I have no choice but to push forward. Today was the last time I would ever get a chance to stop the Clockwork Union.
I was only a storey above the two that were speaking, so they were directly beneath me, I crouched low, going as still as I could. Although it was completely dark in this room, I could see quite well, this was nothing for a werewolf like me.
I sniffed the air, registering the multiple scents of my targets, so in case I needed to keep my distance while I trailed them, it would be easy to track them with scents.
"I have no time for premature celebrations, nor do I think I am interested in stupidly cheap beer, when I can have the world in the palm of my hands in the next fifteen minutes but I am married to an idiot who only thinks of alcohol and brothels."
"Oh, Thena," the grumpy voice of the drago came again. "Alright, let's go," he said with a kind of bitterness to his tone.
After a bit of furniture shifting and multiple footsteps, they were on their way once more. I waited thirty heartbeats before I started to move. I went back out the window and began to journey through the roof.
The moon was full in the sky and it was kind of poetic as I whizzed from roof to roof. My targets walked briskly and at last they reached a certain alleyway that was devoid of any sounds. Even the crickets would dare not chirp here.
I was in a position where I could clearly see what they were both doing. The man was standing in front of a wall and was just staring at it while the girl whose very existence disgusts me.
I didn't know how much hatred I held for her until I saw her. "I would always be with you," that was what she'd promised me… forever. Except forever was three months and two weeks in her personal dictionary. Next thing I knew she was married to Drago.
Athena Von Harkness, that was her name. Someone I was ready to give up a lot for at a point in time but as the story goes, she betrayed me and went for a rich man. Although in her case, it was far more than that.
"Do your thing, will you?, why the hell is it taking too long?" she said, glancing around.
"Quit your yapping woman," Drago growled. "The door opens when it is time to open. It isn't something you can rush. We are on very sacred grounds, so be quiet," the huge man glanced up as if afraid he might get hit by a bolt of lightning. "I don't want the wrath of a god directed at me because a stupid woman can't contain her excitement."
I chuckled, seeing him berate that witch was fun for me. "Oh, there he goes again with the stupid superstitions." She shook her head but didn't say anymore.
I steadied myself and stood on my toes, getting ready to leap at any time. After a few minutes the wall shook and slid open. At that moment, I didn't hesitate, I leapt from the wall, holding my tophat against my head so it wouldn't fly off as I descended the incredible height.
In midair, I unsheathed my sword and aimed for Drago's neck. The bulky man however had seen me at the last second and ducked. I grunted as I discovered, I missed, a silver glint flashing across empty space, as I landed and rolled.
For a man of that size, I didn't expect Drago to move that fast. I, however, didn't hesitate, I went for the kill once more, thrusting my sword forward, but the metal got caught between something…
I glanced up to see two claws holding my sword as if it were nothing but a piece of straw. "And what do we have here?" Drago chuckled. "A lone wolf," he laughed again before twisting his fingers and snapping my sword in two.
Just as he did, he rushed forward at blinding speed. This was one of the reasons I don't shape shift under the full moon. Although it brings out raw power, it also brings out unnecessary rage making it difficult for someone to stay in control.
I twisted my body away from the path of his attack and swiftly removed my dagger. "Oh I knew I couldn't trust you bitch. Isn't this your ex?" He demanded. It was at that moment, I realized I lost my tophat.
Athena, who was still in shock at the situation, glanced in my direction, her eyes meeting mine. The look of disgust that trailer her face almost made me lose balance.
"I don't know why he is here. I haven't freaking spoken to him in months," she tried to protest.
"Save it… after I kill him, I will torture you and…" he paused and stepped back, almost reeling to the back
I sighed, the poison had finally kicked in. "Oh, so you have finally begun to feel the effect. It took a longer time to circulate probably due to your massive body. To think I was worried for a second." I said with a chuckle.
Athena glanced at me. "You fool, what did you do?"
I didn't even look at her, I couldn't. "Oh, please," I said, shushing her before she could even say any other word. "The only reason I am not cutting you down right now is because I need you as leverage," I said, stretching my sword towards her as Drago convulsed on the ground.
"This isn't wolfabane," he said, coughing and wheezing.
I smiled when he said the word, wolfsbane was the usual poison used to attack werewolves. Drago, who was a member of the Clockwork Union, an evil society hellbent on dabbling with dark magic, would have already found a way around that.
"No. That's quicksilver," I smiled. "The moment your claw touched my blade, you were already poisoned. It is very potent too." I smiled.
Drago rolled on the ground. "You don't have… you…" he coughed up blood. "You don't have to do this. I can give you anything you want…" he said. "We are about to complete the ritual, we would have all the world has to offer. I could…" he fell facedown on his stomach.
"Save it. You want to summon a Yokai to grant you wishes by consuming the blood of the innocent, and you think I would want anything to do with that." I shook my head and then I glanced at the position where Athena was supposed to be.
She wasn't there anymore. I glanced around, wondering how I didn't hear her move, but I have never been able to discern her movements ever. Soon enough, I felt a cold blunt steel at the base of my neck.
"Make one sudden movement, and I will blow your head to pieces." her soft but serious voice said.
