The hard work had paid off. Kaito Ren had finally reached Wolf-level Middle. He felt a subtle change in his body, though he couldn't pinpoint it. As long as it was an improvement, he didn't mind.
His only regret was rushing into the fight with Metal Bat and not waiting for the system reward mission. He could have gained even more attributes. He vowed to avoid that mistake in the future. Free stat boosts were too good to pass up!
Still, reaching Wolf-level Middle was a great feeling. He was ready for breakfast.
But a few steps later, he stopped, his gaze drawn to something strange in the distance. What was that…?
Kaito Ren approached the strange, round, black object, about the size of a basketball—some kind of egg?
"System, what is this thing?!"
After studying it, he asked the system.
[Ding… This is an unidentified monster egg. Edible. Can be hatched. Possesses oviparous characteristics. The first living being it sees will be considered its closest companion!]
Whoa! This could be huge!
Kaito Ren's heart pounded. If he understood correctly, he could have a monster pet! A flying monster pet!
Flying! A flying pet! He could ride… sit on… his pet and soar through the sky! The coolness factor would be off the charts!
Kaito Ren wiped the drool from his mouth. He decided to take the egg—no, the pet egg—back to the inn and hatch it. Then… hehehe!
He'd forgotten something important: not only birds lay eggs…
But he was too excited to notice.
Whoa! Kaito Ren scooped up the egg. Even with his strength, it was surprisingly heavy.
After finally getting it back to the inn, he was starving. He synthesized the tusks into two daggers, sold them at a nearby weapon shop for 30,000 yen each, bought breakfast for himself and Saitama, and returned to their room. He planned to move back to the dorm after breakfast. It wasn't just because his roommate was Hellish Blizzard; the inn was incredibly expensive—2,000 yen a night! He couldn't afford to stay there long.
"Teacher, you're back! Wait a sec, I'll ask the innkeeper for an axe or hammer. This eggshell is too hard! I can't crack it open."
Saitama stood up.
"DON'T YOU DARE!!! That's not food!"
Kaito Ren's heart leaped into his throat. He rushed over. Thankfully, the eggshell was intact. His pet was safe! Toughness is key!
"It's not food?! I thought it was breakfast for us!"
Saitama scratched his head, embarrassed.
"Eat this."
Kaito Ren gave Saitama his breakfast and stayed by the egg, ready for the hatching. He had to be the first living thing it saw.
"Oh."
Saitama ate his breakfast, watching his teacher vigilantly guarding the egg. He started to worry about his teacher's mental state. He decided to save up money to take his teacher to the hospital for a checkup.
After breakfast, they checked out and headed back to the dorm.
"Well, well… back from your egg-laying adventure? Impressive skills!"
Hellish Blizzard, lounging on the couch, greeted them sarcastically.
Kaito Ren's face twitched. He'd never realized Hellish Blizzard could be so mean.
But then, his eyes lit up. He turned to Saitama.
"Saitama, I have a question."
"Yes, Teacher?"
Saitama nodded seriously.
"What lays eggs?"
"Lays eggs? Hens, ducks, geese…"
Saitama replied quickly, then looked at his teacher quizzically. "Why are you asking?"
"Just curious."
Kaito Ren glanced at Hellish Blizzard, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. Before she could react, he dashed into his room.
"KAITO REN!!!"
Hellish Blizzard's roar echoed from the living room.
Hehehe, try to keep up!
Kaito Ren chuckled triumphantly. He'd been the top student in his class, and he wasn't afraid of anyone. The egg was too heavy for the bed; it might break it. He decided to put it in a corner, adding some warmth. Then he'd wait for it to hatch.
"Everyone, come out! I'd like to introduce your new roommate."
Just as Kaito Ren finished, Kawana's voice called from outside. He was curious about this powerful instructor and their new roommate. Male or female? What did they look like?
Kaito Ren emerged from his room…
"Hi, we meet again."
Asaka Hanako, standing beside Kawana, waved.
