Saitama shook his head, recounting the entire incident.
"I see."
Kaito Ren nodded after hearing Saitama's story. Saitama had encountered the monster while returning from his training, and had saved Zenko. Then, he and Metal Bat had arrived on the scene.
"Teacher, I'm useless. I couldn't even protect a little girl. How can I say I'll protect humanity?"
Saitama clenched his fists, his gaze filled with frustration and self-reproach. He aspired to protect humanity, yet he couldn't even protect a child. If Kaito Ren hadn't arrived, the monster would have escaped. He felt unworthy.
"If you hadn't acted, Zenko would have been taken. If you hadn't held off the monster, it would have escaped. You did great."
Kaito Ren patted Saitama on the shoulder.
"Really?!"
Saitama's eyes lit up. Kaito Ren's words made him realize how much he'd actually accomplished. But it wasn't enough! He needed to get stronger—as strong as his teacher! Only then could he face any monster without fear.
Meanwhile, the fight was nearing its end. It had been brutal. Metal Bat, once a handsome young man, was now bruised and battered, barely able to stand. The monster wasn't much better; it was covered in lumps, most of its teeth knocked out, its eyes filled with fear.
What was going on?! It had only come to look for a snack, and it had encountered one crazy person after another.
Sniffle… I want to go home…
The monster longed for its own dirty, smelly den, but it wouldn't be going home.
Metal Bat steadied himself, his eyes fierce. He swung his metal bat with all his might, smashing it against the monster's head. Blood and brains splattered everywhere.
After defeating the monster, Metal Bat wiped his hair, then… THUD! He collapsed. Seeing Zenko safely asleep in Kaito Ren's arms, he passed out.
Z-City Central Hospital.
Kaito Ren sat wearily by the bedside, his face grim. He'd been aiming for a monster-hunting, level-up session, but instead… he'd ended up paying a hefty medical bill. He'd only managed to recoup some of the costs after the smell of blood attracted two more monsters, which he'd quickly dispatched and used the materials to craft weapons.
"You saved me and my sister?!"
Metal Bat woke up, first checking on his sister. Seeing her safe, he breathed a sigh of relief and then looked at Kaito Ren.
"Actually, my disciple, Saitama, saved your sister. I just brought you both to the hospital."
Kaito Ren gestured towards Saitama, who was fast asleep.
"Thank you. Without you…"
Metal Bat took a deep breath, his eyes dimming with sadness, before forcing a smile. "I'll repay your kindness!"
"No need. We didn't expect anything in return. You and your sister are badly hurt. Rest up. I've already paid your medical bills, enough to cover your stay until discharge."
Kaito Ren spoke with Metal Bat, then woke Saitama. They left the hospital.
"Teacher, where are we going?"
Saitama yawned, rubbing his eyes.
"Where else? We're going…"
Kaito Ren paused. He'd planned to go back to their dorm, but the awkward encounter with Hellish Blizzard made him reconsider.
He used their remaining money to get a room at a nearby inn. The innkeeper gave them a knowing look as they checked in.
Lying in bed, Kaito Ren finally checked his rewards. They were all from defeating monsters and completing the rescue mission—Strength, Constitution, and Speed Enhancement Agents. No other items.

Metal Bat sat by his sister's bed. He realized he'd forgotten to ask their names. But it was fine. They were probably from Z-City. He'd find them soon enough.
The next morning…
Kaito Ren woke up early, feeling refreshed. He headed for the nearby forest. He'd learned that there were more monsters in the forest. He hoped to reach Wolf-level Middle before breakfast.
He'd barely gone two hundred meters when he encountered a pig-shaped monster looking for food. One was looking for breakfast; the other was looking to level up. They met gazes, and the fight began.
