Chapter 1 - Regression

Will showered quietly, his hands ran through his hair as he applied some shampoo. Slowly remembering his previous life, 'Gosh this isn't good. I shouldn't be stuck up on it for so long.'

He chided himself, until an hour ago he was an Ascended who had been caught up in the Domain War. He was about to challenge the Third Nightmare but before he set out, he was engaged in combat by one of Mordret's reflections.

His body was taken over by him but before he died, Will's so-called useless attribute activated and he somehow found himself in the past. [Return By Death], the attribute was an enigma, he hadn't heard of any attribute sending someone to the past.

But his attribute did, it defied the laws of reality. Will tried to pull up the description of [Return By Death] but failed in doing so. That attribute had been replaced by another one, called [Regressor].

[Regressor] Attribute Description: [You have managed to defy Fate and Reality, and have been sent back into the past. Your mind and your foresight is your weapon, it is under protection].

The shadowy runes of the Spell whispered.

This attribute was a mystery to him but he didn't dwell much longer. As a veteran in the Nightmare Spell, he had mastered the skill of improv.

But the most surprising thing was that this Sunny wasn't the same Sunny he remembered. This Sunny was a girl! Instead of the pole that she originally had, she now had a hole.

The surprise quickly dissipated before he accepted it, maybe his attribute didn't send him back in time. But to an equally probable reality.

Yet he couldn't help but think of something, 'Why did I forget Sunny after she went to Antarctica.' That question lingered in his mind.

His memories of Sunny had vanished after she went to save Antarctica, but now that he was sent back in the past. He remembered it all, his memories with Sunny, their difficult life in the outskirts, the thick and thin parts of their friends, everything.

He had somehow forgotten his best friend, his most trusted confidant. Will unconsciously balled his hands into a fist, his Aspect was powerful, yet he had been chained by the fear of death.

He was afraid of it, causing him to not challenge the Third Nightmare and that was the reason for his downfall, it was hilarious. Even if one knew a little about Fate, one remains helpless towards it, so they might as well put a smiling face to hide all the pain, sorrow and loneliness.

His own life was similar to that, no matter how much he tried to avoid his Fate. It still came knocking to his door, but in this life. He would not longer be a slave to Fate, he would defy it, he would conquer it!

'I had such astounding powers but in the end, I didn't use them for anything because I was a filthy coward. But no more, I shall never remain a coward ever again! In this life, I'm going to use my powers to their fullest extent.' Will thought, his words resounded with conviction.

This epiphany was called Post Nut Clarity by some, but in Will's case it was Post Death Clarity.

"..."

Will quickly dried himself off before wearing a standard police issued tracksuit. His blonde hair still has traces of being wet and it clung to his head, opposed to his usual fluffy style.

Will soon made his way to the cafeteria where Master Jet and Sunny were sitting. Sunny ravenously devoured her food as Master Jet watched him eat.

"Good, you're here, grab a bite to eat. After that I'll explain everything." Will looked at the cheap synthetic gruel and politely refused.

"I'll eat at the Academy," He said with a genial smile.

Will sat next to Sunny as he watched her devour the food, "The Nightmare was tough on you, huh?" Sunny paused for a moment with a bit of hesitation and she answered back.

"It was unexpected to say the least, I was half sure I'd turn up like those dead sex slaves." Sunny joked, as Will nodded.

The outskirts were horrifying and strangely peaceful, the place was riddled with all sorts of crime but everyone there was tight-knit too. Some people stole corpses from the ground and charged people for sex with it.

This was all illegal but the place was so worse off that the police overlooked any crime that happened.

"My Nightmare was the same, almost lost my delightful charm and all."

Sunny stifled a laugh and resumed eating.

After a few awkward minutes, Master Jet quickly broke the tension.

"As per protocol, I am obligated to inform you of a few things. It is mostly a formality. First of all, concerning your Nightmare…"

She glanced at them and sighed, "You all are entitled to receive free psychological counseling. No matter what traumatic experience you have encountered, there is no shame in asking for help. Your mind is as important as your body — it's only right to keep it healthy. Are you interested?"

Will shook his head but pointed at Sunny, "I don't need such trivial treatment, but he definitely needs it."

Sunny looked offended as she turned her head towards him, "I don't!" Will shook his head in disappointment, "I heard you talking to your own shadow my dear friend."

Sunny turned her head with a bit of confusion before her face reddened, "How do you know that?! You pervert!" Will waved his hands as he looked her sharp in the eye, "First of all, the walls in the washroom are really thin, second of all it wouldn't matter because we've already seen each other naked plenty of times."

Sunny's lips twitched as she couldn't argue with the bumbling idiot. Just as Will was going to continue his point, Master Jet stepped in before the conversation increased in weirdness.

She let out a slight cough as she reigned back the conversation, "Let's stop the slug fest and focus back on the task at hand. Since both of you have decided to turn down the counselling, you can also talk to me. Was your Nightmare very hard?"

Will's eyes grew distant as he recalled his First Nightmare, to say the least it was hellish. The countless bloodshed, the torture it, it broke him to a certain degree. It was also the origin of his fear of Death.

Jet looked at Will's cold and distant eyes, as her expression turned warm, she seemed to have already pieced together his Nightmare, "I see." She uttered softly.

"It was much worse than I expected and exactly as horrific as I imagined." Sunny replied with a hint of coldness.

She nodded, satisfied with that explanation.

"That's a good attitude. I won't pry any further. Us outskirt rats are way more resilient than people think."

There had been no records of their existences in the system, which was synonymous with being from the outskirts.

As for how they knew their names, Will honestly had no clue.
