Ryosuke lowered his gaze for a moment, listening intently to his aunt's words. Deep inside, he felt strangely reassured by what she was saying. It was as if all his thoughts, doubts, and questions were finally starting to make sense. He had always felt like something was boiling inside him—an immense force—but he had never known how to explain it. Now, he knew. His reserve of cursed energy wasn't just there—it was phenomenal.
"But you know," Yuki continued, suddenly clapping her hands with an enigmatic smile, "it's all well and good to have so much energy, but it's even better to know how to use it properly. Because a large amount of energy is useless if you can't channel it or use it the right way. Now, tell me, do you know why, since the start of our conversation, I've been calling this force within us 'cursed energy'?"
Ryosuke stayed silent for a few seconds, pretending to think, before answering. "Well, every time I try to control this energy… it's like I feel something deep inside. A cluster of negative emotions rising within me. Anger, fear, pain—it's like a whirlwind, even if it's subtle."
Yuki raised an eyebrow and let out a small laugh. "Not everyone is able to figure that out on their own. You're absolutely right. That's exactly what cursed energy is. It's the result of the negative emotions every human carries inside."
She paused, then went on. "Cursed energy is the manifestation of humanity's inner evil. Every time we feel fear, anger, or any other negative emotion, this energy grows stronger."
Yuki slowly uncrossed her arms, letting out a small sigh. "Every human being, whether a sorcerer or not, produces negative emotions. It's a universal truth. You can't escape it. Anger, fear, sadness—they're all part of human nature. And these emotions… they generate what we call cursed energy. But the difference between us, the Jujutsu sorcerers, and others is that for us, this energy stays contained inside. It never truly escapes—it just keeps building up. For us, it's an internal fire that never burns outward. But for non-sorcerers, it's a whole different story. The cursed energy they produce is… dispersed. It's expelled from them into the atmosphere, where it mixes with other energies."
She fell silent for a moment before speaking again, her voice a bit more serious. "And that dispersion, that uncontrolled release of cursed energy… that's what eventually causes problems. When that scattered energy gathers in large amounts, it becomes unstable. That's how curses are born. Those hideous, monstrous creatures you've seen spreading everywhere."
Yuki clapped her hands. "But let's get back on track. First of all, what you need to know is that cursed energy, on its own, has no real value. It's just raw force, an inert energy that accomplishes nothing useful without a way to manipulate it. Most people think cursed energy is, by itself, an immense source of power. But the truth is, it's worth nothing if you don't know what to do with it. Not in its raw state, at least. It's just there—a dormant potential. To make it useful, to turn it into something powerful, you need to know how to exploit it. Like this."
With a quick gesture, she pointed at the black, translucent curtain surrounding them.
"This curtain that's hiding us right now is a simple example of what you can do with cursed energy when you use it properly. It's a barrier, a protection—but it's far more than just an accumulation of energy."
Yuki's lips curved into another enigmatic smile. "You told me you tried flashy attacks—like a Kamehameha and other stuff like that…" She paused before adding in a teasing tone, "So, tell me, did it work?"
Ryosuke blushed slightly, embarrassed. He scratched the back of his head before replying, "Well… no, not really."
Yuki burst out laughing. "I'd have been surprised if it had! It's normal. You see, a lot of young sorcerers make that mistake. They think that to launch a technique, you just need to focus the energy and release it all at once, like that. But it's not that simple. The step you missed is the creation of the technique."
Ryosuke frowned, paying closer attention. Up until now, his aunt had been talking about things he knew from the manga. As he'd said, he had tried, like any self-respecting otaku, to pull off a Kamehameha. But to his surprise, the only result was generating energy without any real effect. The rest of the techniques were no better. Only his Overhaul seemed to work naturally.
"A technique isn't just a discharge of raw cursed energy," Yuki continued. "A technique is a formula. And cursed energy is what fuels that formula."
"A formula? Like in math?"
"Exactly. Cursed energy is like a set of negative numbers. It's there, but in its raw state, it doesn't do anything concrete. To use it, you have to apply the right operators. Add, subtract, multiply… you have to manipulate this energy the way you would manipulate numbers to get a result."
Ryosuke nodded slowly, absorbing this new perspective. "So… if I want to launch a technique, I first have to… build it, like an equation, right?"
"That's exactly it!" Yuki replied enthusiastically. "I see you've inherited your mother's intelligence! And the more you understand how your energy works, the more complex formulas you can build. You could even invent your own techniques. But it all starts with a basic understanding. It's not the amount of energy that matters—it's how you use it."
Ryosuke stayed silent for a while, thinking back on all his failed attempts. Now, everything was starting to make sense. Everything he'd learned in science, his math classes, even the hours he'd spent working with complex formulas to better use his Overhaul—he could now apply all of that to mastering Jujutsu itself.
He straightened slightly, a satisfied smile forming on his lips. He felt a new understanding, a renewed excitement. He had never been this close to grasping the true workings of cursed energy. He couldn't wait to resume his experiments.
Yuki, watching him silently, quickly noticed her nephew had gotten lost in thought. She smiled gently, amused by the intensity of his focus. She was about to ask him another question to test if he had truly understood what she'd just explained, but Ryosuke suddenly spoke first, lifting his eyes to hers, a spark of curiosity in his gaze.
"Auntie… why is it that humans only produce cursed energy from negative emotions? Why can't they also produce some kind of blessed energy from positive emotions?"
