Chapter 38 - On the ship at last

The space around the two figures in black shimmered, the light behind them vanishing was the only way to be able to see where these figures were as they silently travelled through space.

Infront of them was a small ship, the red along the side of the ship allowed the two to identify where the ship was. The space so clear was yet so perilous to traverse.

Seth allowed his body to float weightlessly in what seemed like a slow movement towards the ship. if it was not for his knowledge on how vast the distance between the two ships was, he would not think he had moved at all.

Inside his helmet he saw the light of galaxies in the furthest reaches of space, the light warping inside his visor. The light, which was millions of years old had felt nothing, no time, no movement and yet here it was, its whole likelihood happening in an instant. It would never feel the galaxies it travelled, nor see the wonders it had come across. The beauty of the universe was illuminated by something that in time just began its existence precisely before it was ended.

Memories of his life began to play as he watched the beauty of space. All the happy memories replaying in his mind. He was lost in the memories which always grew sad eventually, no matter how long he would live he would always see death. He was death for so many so how can he weep about seeing death of those he loved, his mind grappled with the duality of this, like the hypocrite nature of it.

The ship had come closer now while Seth's mind was away from himself.

The ship shimmers was so close, the stillness of the galaxy amplified as his suit slowed him down to allow his contact with the ship. His body slowly came to a stop under the ship, until his speed matched the ships and none looked like they where moving. It was so close his hands reached out to the surface that looked pristine, The black of the surface reflecting himself back on it, the hands on the surface reached his and he could no longer let go. He was now attached to the ship, the magnets keeping him firmly held against the bow.

The ship glided along, moving seamlessly through the elders fleet, moving deeper, towards the elders ship.

...

Within the loading bay Seth and Mongrel looked out from underneath the hull of the ship. The Druin were surrounding them, the language fierce and guttural. Mongrels eyes were wide, he looked around moving slowly as shock settled on his face.

Seth surveyed the surroundings, he was worried about what was happening as his ears followed pieces on the conversation.

A grunt here or there is all he could distinguish, but it was enough. He knew what the growl for Humans was and none had said it so far.

The Druin held fast surrounding the ship as they moved closer, their eyes drew up to the hull of the ship and two Druin walked down.

Their conversation was impossible to follow but as they moved away the last remaining Druin surrounding the ship left, leaving only a few scattered around watching the ship.

Seth lowered his body the ground, a welcome sight after the space jump he had just pulled off.

He slinked between ships keeping an eye on the Druin standing guard and on Mongrel who was still a little unstable from the space leap.

Seth made his way to the side of the ship, his hands looked for something among a mass of fungi.

The fungi mass shifted and Seth grabbed a hold of a fungi fruit. With it in his hand he slowly released a jet of cold air from his suit. When the air hit the fruit the lights dimmed and the ship bay lost power.

The Druin scurried around trying to make their way to the fungi mass.

In the chaos Seth and Mongrel slipped between the Druin and out a bay door. Now that the power was out and no guard was around they managed to open the door and slip out unnoticed.

Outside the ship bay Seth quickly walked along the corridor, scanning the doors looking for a specific one. He went from one door to another before the gauntlet on his wrist lit up green.

On the inside was a small janitors closet. Once inside he was able to access the swage and ventilation system.

'Please be the vents, please be the vents' Mongrel hoped in vain as he knew what the choice was, it was always the same choice as it led to the most places and was big enough for both of them to fit in.

Horror settled on Mongrel's face, hidden by the mask as Seth opened the sewar.

"What's wrong buddy, don't want to come along as much anymore" said Seth in a low voice that contained a cheerful edge to it.

Mongrel grimaced once more before pushing Seth out of the way.

"I'll go first" he said "Where are we popping out?"

"The maintenance room three corridors down from the elders room"

"isn't that to far away" said Mongrel, his hand twitching on the steel opening.

"It is as close as we can get"

"Fuck" Mongrel whispered as he steeled his nerves, took a deep breath and held it like he would have to smell it if he breathed it in.

Seth pushed Mongrel through the opening into the sewar, he did not want to spend a second more here then he could. With one quick fluid motion he sealed up the opening like it was before their intrusion.

The walls of the ship were thin, the sound of Druin walking by echoed into the sewars. They walked slowly, cautious of not making to much noise.

The ground, if you could call it that squelched and shifted with their steps enveloping their boots each time it made contact.

The sewars were small and cramped, forcing them both into hunched positions.

"Next time I go in front" whispered Seth to Mongrel.

"Why?"

"So I don't have to stare at your ass"

"It is better than ya deserve" said Mongrel as he held in a chuckle.

They squeezed through small openings, one after another until finally they arrived at their exit.

"What is that way?" asked Mongrel as he motioned with his head to the pipe that led forward.

"To the elders quarters"

"Why don't we use that" asked Mongrel, thinking of the risk they were about to take when they could come up through his toilet.

"Mongrel, why do you think these tunnels are so big or that there is hatches. They know they are big enough for a person to get into they need to clean them out once, thus they don't leave this place barren for us to wander down" said Seth as he showed his glowing gauntlet to Mongrel. On it was the sewar in front of them, a 3D hologram version. At least with a brown ting to it, on the hologram it showed several red dots littering the sewars in front of them.

"Booby traps. In here?" Mongrel asked, his voice a high pitched whisper.

"Yes, so keep moving"

"Also why is ya hologram brown?"

"It draws water from the air if their isn't enough spare and we are in high humidity"

"Don't tell me that is shit water from the air"

"Seems to be" Seth said with a shrug as he pushed Mongrel out of the way and opened the hatch.

Mongrel, once out of the sewar proceeded to splutter, like being inside the pipe corrupted his air supply with fecal matter.
