The last thing Vesper remembered was the screech of tires and the smell of burnt rubber. It was a mundane end for a mundane life—a 9-to-5 office worker caught in the wrong crosswalk at the wrong time. There was no white light, no heavenly choir, and certainly no "Welcome to Paradise" banner.
Just a sudden, sickening drop into cold, wet darkness.

"Am I... alive?" Vesper tried to gasp, but he had no lungs. He tried to blink, but he had no eyes. Instead, he felt the world through a strange, 360-degree vibration. He was a translucent, azure blob of jelly, roughly the size of a dinner plate, shivering on a jagged stone floor.
"Wait. A slime? You've got to be kidding me," he thought, a wave of phantom nausea rippling through his gelatinous body. "I died as a human and I'm reborn as a literal puddle of spit? Where are the legendary swords? Where's the hero's cape? I don't even have a skeleton!"
He tried to move, and the sensation was revolting. It was a rhythmic squelching, a slow-motion ripple of his own mass pulling itself forward inch by inch.
"This is humiliating. I'm a sentient booger," Vesper grumbled internally. "Okay, Vesper, calm down. If there's a System, there's a way out. Status! Show me my damn stats!"

"Ten health points? A stiff breeze could kill me!" A heavy THUMP shook the ground. To Vesper's newly sensitive form, it felt like an earthquake. He "looked"—or rather, sensed—the vibrations twenty feet away.
A shadow loomed. It was a Cave Strider—a nightmare fusion of a wolf and a spider, covered in bristly black fur with eight chitinous legs that clicked rhythmically against the cave floor. It was over six feet tall, its multi-faceted eyes glowing with a predatory red hue as it tore into the carcass of a massive, armored beetle.
"Oh, hell no. That thing is the size of a minivan," Vesper's thoughts became frantic. "And I'm a snack-sized appetizer. Move, you blue blob! Move!"

"Thanks for the tip, Captain Obvious!" Vesper hissed. He squeezed his body into a narrow crevice between two jagged rocks. As he slid, his edge brushed against something hard and cold. It was a severed limb—a discarded leg from the Strider's prey, still dripping with green ichor and covered in a thick, metallic carapace.
"It smells... no, I don't have a nose... it feels... delicious?" A primal, hollow hunger suddenly clawed at the center of his being. It wasn't just hunger for food; it was a hunger for power.

"If I'm going to survive this nightmare, I need to be more than just jelly," Vesper steeled his resolve. "Eat. I need to eat everything."
His body didn't open a mouth. Instead, his entire form stretched, thinned out like a veil, and flowed over the chitinous leg. It felt like a hot tingle spreading through his core as his digestive acids went to work.

Vesper felt his liquid body thicken. The translucent blue darkened, becoming more opaque and resilient.
"I feel... tougher. Like I'm made of rubber instead of water," he noted, feeling a surge of genuine excitement. "Is this the trick? I don't need to train; I just need to swallow the world?"
Suddenly, the clicking stopped.
The Cave Strider had finished its meal. It turned its multi-eyed head, catching the faint, magical glow of the Slime that had just changed color. It let out a chattering, clicking hiss that echoed off the damp cave walls. It didn't see a threat; it saw a strange, glowing dessert.
"Wait, wait, wait! I was joking about the whole 'eating the world' thing! We can talk about this!" Vesper panicked as the monster crouched, its powerful hind legs tensing for a leap.
The monster lunged, a blur of black fur and fangs.
"Fine!" Vesper's fear turned into a sharp, cold spike of adrenaline. "You want a piece of me? Come get a mouthful of acid, you overgrown flea!"
