Chapter 1 - kealen

Kaelen walked down the crowded streets of Lingard City, the familiar weight of his Lingard armor weighing down on his shoulders. He had been waiting for this moment his entire life - his first day at the Bureau. As he made his way through the throngs of people, his eyes scanned the faces of those around him, searching for any signs of trouble. But nothing could have prepared him for what he was about to witness.

In the midst of the bustling market, a Baron's guard had cornered a street vendor, accusing him of clogging the sidewalk with his goods. Without hesitation, the guard drew his sword and struck down the vendor, his body falling lifeless to the ground. Kaelen's eyes widened in shock and instinctively, his hand went to the hilt of his sword. But then he remembered - he was no longer a Lingard soldier, he was a member of the Bureau now.

Forcing himself to stay calm, Kaelen continued on his way, trying to ignore the disturbing sight he had just witnessed. But the memory of the guard's cold and callous actions stayed with him, causing a chill to run down his spine. It was a reminder of the harsh and brutal reality of this city - where the law was nothing but a joke and the powerful did as they pleased.

As he approached the Bureau entrance, Kaelen couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation. He knew that this was not going to be an easy job. He reached up to touch the Naor-chip at the base of his neck, the metallic device that connected him to the Shadow Control - the source of their powers. It was a constant reminder of the sacrifices they had to make and the weight they carried on their shoulders.

Pushing the heavy doors of the Bureau open, Kaelen stepped into a dimly lit and cluttered room. It was a far cry from the grand and polished headquarters he had imagined. Instead, it felt more like a graveyard for paperwork and forgotten cases. But he knew that this was where he was meant to be - fighting for justice in a city where justice was scarce.

As he made his way through the maze of desks and papers, Kaelen was stopped by a man in a crisp suit, his grey hair neatly combed back. This was Sir Lurak, the director of the Bureau. Kaelen's heart skipped a beat as he realized that he was finally meeting the man who had hand-picked him for this elite squad.

But Sir Lurak's reception was far from what Kaelen had expected. He was not impressed by Kaelen's Lingard background, instead, he seemed annoyed by it. "In this city, we don't catch killers," he said, his tone sharp and to the point. "We manage them."

Kaelen felt a pang of disappointment, but he knew that Sir Lurak was right. This was not a city where justice prevailed, it was a city where the powerful ruled and the weak suffered. But Kaelen was determined to make a difference, no matter how small it may be.

Sir Lurak led him to a group of individuals - his new squad. But they were not the friendly and welcoming faces Kaelen had hoped for. Instead, they looked at him with disdain and suspicion. Gideon Rook, the Calcified, practically sneered at Kaelen's clean and polished armor. Lyra, the Healer, looked at him as if he were already a corpse.

But before Kaelen could even introduce himself, Sir Lurak handed them a file. "This is your first mission," he stated bluntly. "The Merchant's cargo has been stolen. Your job is to retrieve it." It was not a grand and noble task, but a mundane and routine one. But Kaelen knew that there was more to this mission than met the eye.

As he flipped through the file, Kaelen's eyes widened in shock. The "stolen cargo" wasn't goods or supplies - it was people. Innocent men, women, and children who had been taken from their homes and forced into a life of slavery.

And just like that, Kaelen's determination and drive were reignited. He knew that this was only the beginning, but he was ready to go for it - to do whatever it took to save those people and bring justice to this corrupt city. This was the Lingard Elite way - to fight for what was right, no matter the cost. And Kaelen was ready to take that first step.
