Chapter 1 - Chapter One (Opening Fire).

I took a sip from the glass of wine entangled in my fingers as I stared at the view of the mansion, it was calming to a point. It almost made me forget all I carried on my shoulders.

Something felt wrong, it's almost been two days since I heard from him…

It seemed like he was already caught, he was always the careful one, though.

It was a stupid idea to send him in as a spy, Canez was always brutal and crazy whenever he found a spy sent his way…Ringggg!

I immediately stretch out my hand and pick my phone from the table… "Enox!" I exclaimed as I answered the call.

"Elta! It's confirmed they do carry out experiments, they're creating monsters." He said trying as much as possible to speak in a low tone; his breath was uneven, like he sounded panicked.

"What do you mean by monsters?"

What kind of monster? I asked for more information.

"They're mixing DNA from some creatures into human blood. It makes them go crazy," he said, pausing to catch his breath. "They turn into killing machines, but most of them are rogue. I'm still making more re…." Someone cut off his voice.

"Enox??!" I heard a loud shuffling sound, and then a gunshot blasted through the phone.

My brain had already calculated what had happened.

Someone picked up the phone then I heard his voice...

"Hello, my dear Scelta. Your precious friend is dead now…" he said, a hint of mockery in his voice. He paused, waiting for my response, but I remained silent.

"I'm coming for you, Elta, we'll meet when the sun sets." With that, he cut the call.

I sat there in a slight daze of sadness, my fingers gripped the table harder than I had realized.

Enox was like a brother to me, he had always stood by my side. Canez knew this, and he killed him!

I'll make sure to welcome him as soon as dark falls. He should share in this pain too.

I hurried to contact Gilda to prepare the troops because Canez will arrive with force, and I will too.

I sat there for a while, letting the quiet breeze flow through. My hands trembled as I let out a dismissive "Hmph!" My body's response to the loss… my heart had gone a long time ago.

If there is something I'm sure of, it is that Canez did this to get a reaction, he's trying to play a mind game here. I allowed him to understand me too well, despite knowing it was unwise, I must maintain my composure.

The Sun was setting. I stood waiting for the event that was about to unfold, the air felt unusual, it made me uncomfortable and unsure. Then I heard a loud sound… an explosion.

It's finally time! The war has begun.

The mansion's alarms blared in warning and alert, guards shouting and radios screaming. I've always known this feeling of uneasiness in my bones made it more exhilarating.

Then Gilda busts in, "They're hitting the eastern gates." She informs me.

Lock the perimeters! Snipers, get to the rooftop. Heavy artillery, online!

She immediately rushed out.

A few minutes later, I walked into the hallway, I could see blood on the marble floors. I kept moving until I sighted one of my men already fallen. He had a few breaths left, but before I could reach him, he was gone. I knelt beside him with his eyes closed, and then I stood up and continued moving. At this point, I did not have much time left on my hands, so I had to head straight to the center of the battle.

I headed into the armoury, I picked up an assault rifle… I saw a magazine lying bare on the table, and I skimmed through it. I slid a pistol into my waistband and then moved out.

Enemies breach the interior corridor, at which I placed my gun and took a ready stance.

I steered my range towards a bunch of them, taking them out one by one, I am accustomed to this.

The sounds of gunshots filled the air. I took down as many men as I could but they kept coming, I was their main target.

I felt a strange presence then, something lurked in the shadows. The feeling was familiar, almost like that of a person.

It was cold and unwelcoming. Still, I found it intriguing. I got distracted and then realized that the enemies outnumbered me. There were too many enemies around me.

One man lunged at me with great speed. I blocked his attack right away. Then, a gunshot rang out, and the man next to me vanished.

He hadn't fallen, he was gone. I heard dragged breath and boot scraping on the ground, then silence.

Another man was gone.

It wasn't my men, none of them were within the radius at that time.

I stood there trying to figure out what was there. The two hefty men lunged at me. They grabbed for my gun, but I realized I was out of bullets. Then, they pinned me to the ground. I didn't have the strength to fight back.

Canez then revealed his cruel face from the corner, which evoked disgust.

The sight of him filled me with rage, he killed Enox.

He deserves to die.

"You value loyalty, I value predictability." He smirked as he moved closer to my face.

"Fuck you, Canez! I'm gonna kill you, I promise!" I raised my voice in anger.

"All this fire…and nowhere to put it." He teased my face with his fingers.

God, so help me, I couldn't take it anymore, I wanted to drive a couple of nails into his head.

I felt strained. My arms ached from the men's force as I tried to break free. My head was heavy. I couldn't overpower them all at once.

I recalled the dagger. I guided my fingers to it. Once I gripped it, the metal vibrated. The sound faded, my vision narrowed, and I felt my arms.

I pushed one of the men off me before he could retaliate. I rushed to move out.

"What did you do?" Canez's eyes widened.

I took the men down within seconds, and I was heading straight for Canez, he knew I was coming for him.

I threw myself with speed towards him with a knife aiming for his chest, I messed up! I acted on impulse, following a familiar pattern. From my calculations, he was going to flip me over.

He put his hands on me as I reached. I tried to stab him, but the knife grazed his chest. He dodged, avoiding a deeper cut and getting a slice.

Canez's eyes widened; he clutched his hands and recalculated.

As I was about to pull another move, I felt the same presence again.

This time it felt stronger, I could feel it breathing, and its breaths came in rapid succession.

I sensed something huge turn its head my way. Then, a low, furious howl pierced the air.

It sent shivers down my spine, the hairs on my skin spiked. At that point, everyone felt alarmed.

Canez and his men move toward the howl. Without warning, something leaps through the air and attacks one man. Gunshots ring out, followed by a heavy thud.
