Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The world

After having finished looking through the systems current abilities Dave decided that the best thing he could do now was to gain knowledge of this new world that he found himself in

as such he finally decided to head out of his room and look for his parents to find out more about his current situation

heading downstairs Dave was able to pick up the scent of food coming from the kitchen, something that he had never smelt before but could already tell that it was his mom's cooking and that he was in for a treat

"mom, is that you" he said as he made his way into the kitchen

"oh honey, what are you doing up, you should be resting" said Sapphire in a slight panic, stopping cooking and going over to Dave

"but mom I feel fine, the food that you gave to me earlier made me feel much better but it wasn't enough so when i smelt something I was drawn down here" Dave said with a slightly guilty look on his face

"well if you feel ok" she said looking him over for any signs of fatigue with a worried expression

"in that case sit down at the table, I'm currently wipping up your favourite, rice with diced chicken and peas, a great meal to be able to get your strength back" Sapphire informed him as she went back to the cooker, huming a tune as she cooked

"and a growing boy like you needs all the nutrients they can have" she giggled, trying to make the mood bright

"while you're cooking can I ask you some questions, I think I might have a bit of memory loss" Dave asked as he sat down at the table

"are you alright honey" she replied, turning to him in worry

"I'm fine mom, just some lapse in memory, nothing serious" Dave said, not wanting to worry her

"if you insist" she says as she plates up the food, still not entirely convinced but feeling better with his words, placing the plate down in front of him

"what is it that you want to know"

"well first I want to know how old I am, I'm struggling to remember and I feel like I'm about the age where I'm about to hit puberty" Dave said, trying to act as if he had some idea so as to not worry Sapphire while also gaining infomation, while tucking into the meal in front of him

"you're 10 dear" she replied with a bit of a sad expression

"what's the matter mom" Dave asked, noticing the shift in her tone

"well when I say that you're 10, I mean that you just turned 10, and that that was the day that you were struck by lightning so thinking about such a thing still makes me..." she trails off as tears form in the corner of her eyes

"I could have lost you while you were so young" she sniffles

"mom" Dave says in a concerned voice, placing down his fork and getting up to move round to her, hugging her trembling figure "it's ok, I'm fine"

they stay still, doing nothing but hugging for a few minutes with Dave slowly stroking Sapphire's back slowly to help her calm down

"ok sweetie, I'm alright now" she says finally breaking the hug "you're such a kind young man, your future wife is going to be so lucky to have a man like you" she smiles

"mom, i'm a bit to young to be thinking about stuff like that yet" Dave replied, blushing slightly

"alright I won't tease you about that for now, but I want to be the first person you tell when you get a girlfriend" she joked in a more upbeat manner, returning to how she was before Dave had asked his age

"now, are there any more questions you want answering" she asked as Dave sat back down and continued his meal

"well this might be a bit of a weird question, but I've felt a weird feeling in my chest for a while now, I'm still a bit muddled but is this magic" he asked, hoping not to sound like he was going crazy

"ah so you can feel it now" she responded as if it were natural "yes it is magic, your father and I assumed that you would awaken it at some point given that both of us have a small amount of magical talent ourselves" she tells Dave as she stretches her hand out

"if you can't remember I'm a wind mage" she informs him "let the cool winds blow forth from my hand with my magic as the cost" she speaks, a breeze blowing from her hand

"and I'm a fire mage" speaks Richard from behind Dave, startling him due to not having realized that his Dad had entered the room "using my mana, I call forth a small flame to light up the room" he exclaims, a small flame flickering into life above his open palm

"although we can only perform small tricks like this we still do have the ability to perform magic so we always had a feeling that you would be able to do the same" he says as he closes his hand, extinguishing the flame

"it seems like we'll need to make a trip into town once you feel better to find out what element you have and how much magical power you posses, if it turns out you have a good element or a large store of magic you might be able to get into a good school" Richard tells Dave as he ruffles his hair

"yes, but dear, make sure that Dave hear is fully recovered before you do that" she says to Richard with a sterm voice "and of course I will be coming with you, until I feel like you are back to 100% I will be keeping you around me so that I can protect you" she announces looking straight at Dave

"Ok mom" he replies "dad do we have any books on how to improve the amount of magic I have, I want to get a head start and if I can improve my chances even slightly I'll do what I can do improve my chances of getting into a good school" Dave says resolutely

"that's my son" Richard says with a booming laugh "it's not much and if you get into a good school you'll get access to much better techniques but we do have a book on increasing the amount of mana a person has, let me just go look for it" he says proud of his son's initiative

a few minutes later after Dave had finished his food Richard came back with a small book "here you go son, give this a read and follow the instructions, and if anything feels weird shout for us immediately, although with it being a low class technique there's basically no chance of anything like that happening but keep it in mind" he says handing Dave the small book

"now, back to bed with you, you might feel better but it's better to be safe than sorry" he says with a stern but playful voice

"your fathers right, bed, now" says Sapphire as she smiles at Dave "and we're glad you're feeling better son"

following their instructions Dave heads back to his bedroom, but not to rest, he was too excited for that, he had magic to test.
