Chapter 15 - CHAPTER 15 – Copy Mechanic

The reflection in the hospital window didn't just smile; it rippled.

Kai clutched his temples as a searing heat—different from the golden warmth of his evolution—clashed with the frosty resonance of Elena's mana. It felt like someone was trying to shove a jagged puzzle piece into a slot that didn't exist.

"Kai? Kai, breathe!" Elena's voice was a sharp blade of ice cutting through the mental fog.

He gasped, his eyes snapping open. The reflection was gone. The violet-eyed man was nowhere to be seen, leaving only the sterilized scent of the infirmary and the frantic thumping of Kai's own heart.

"I'm... I'm okay," Kai wheezed, rubbing his chest. "Just a bit of mental indigestion. Apparently, copying an S-Rank core comes with some side effects. Who knew?"

Elena stood back, her silver hair shimmering with a residual chill. She looked at him—really looked at him—with a mixture of wonder and a terror she couldn't quite mask. "You didn't just copy a move, Kai. You reached into my core and pulled out the logic of the Ice Empress. That shouldn't be possible. Even for a Rank-D talent."

Kai pulled up his golden screen, his fingers trembling slightly as he swiped through the new notifications.

[Skill Evolved: Copy Mechanic (Rank D)] [Current Slots: 1/1] [Mimicry Source: Elena Frost (Deep Connection established)] [Effect: You have permanently 'saved' the core logic of the Ice Empress. You can now use Ice-type skills at 30% effectiveness without an active link.]

"Deep connection, huh?" Kai looked at Elena, a faint, lopsided smirk returning to his face despite the cold sweat on his brow. "Is this the part where we talk about our feelings, or do I just get to keep the frost-powers as a parting gift?"

Elena's cheeks flushed a very faint, crystalline pink. She turned away, smoothing her uniform with unnecessary aggression. "It's a technical term, Rowan. It just means our mana-signatures have synchronized through the link. Don't make it... weird."

"Too late," Kai muttered, looking at his hand. He focused on the memory of that frozen geometry he'd felt. A tiny, perfect snowflake manifested in his palm, spinning lazily. It didn't drain his mana like a copied skill; it felt like a natural extension of his own breathing.

"If I can do this with you," Kai said, his voice dropping its sarcastic edge, "I can do it with anyone. If I establish a 'connection' with a Strength-type, or a Speed-type..."

"You become the ultimate counter-measure," Elena finished, her voice solemn. "But Kai, look at your screen. Your Intelligence is 9.00. Your Stamina is nearly 8.00. You're physically catching up to the A-Ranks, but your Talent Rank is still registered as F. If you walk into that Faculty Research Office tomorrow and start throwing snowflakes..."

"I'll be in a government lab before I can say 'I told you so,'" Kai finished. He closed his hand, crushing the snowflake into mist. "I need to learn how to hide this. Not just mask it, but bury it."

The next morning, the Academy was a pressure cooker of rumors.

As Kai walked down the main hallway toward his first lecture, the sea of students parted. They weren't laughing anymore. They were staring.

"There he is," a student whispered. "The one who survived the Sector 7 mutation. They say Elena Frost had to carry him out."

"I heard he fainted from the mere sight of the Alpha-Hound," another snickered. "Rank-F trash stays trash, no matter who he's paired with."

Kai kept his head down, but his 9.00 Intelligence was like a radar, picking up every shift in the atmosphere. He could feel the weight of the silver coin in his pocket—it was cold now, dormant, but he knew the Snake was still watching.

He reached his locker and found it covered in a thin, shimmering layer of frost. A small, elegant note was stuck to the metal.

Library. Post-lecture. Don't be late. - E.

Kai smiled. "A secret rendezvous? My social standing is sky-rocketing."

"You think this is a joke, don't you?"

The voice was like a bucket of hot oil being dumped over the morning's cool air. Kai turned to see Ryker Thorne standing a few feet away. Ryker looked... terrible. His skin was sallow, his hair was unkempt, and his C-Rank 'Flame Burst' was flickering erratically around his knuckles.

"Ryker," Kai said, leaning back against his frosted locker. "You look like you've been sleeping in a chimney. Everything okay? Or did you finally realize that orange isn't your color?"

Ryker's eyes flared with a desperate, sickly light. Ever since the integrated sparring session where Kai had neutralized his fire pillar, Ryker had been the laughingstock of the C-Rank track.

"The scouts... they're calling me a 'Rank-Failure,'" Ryker hissed, stepping into Kai's personal space. The heat coming off him was jagged and unstable. "They say an F-Rank handled me like a child. My father... he's going to cut me off, Rowan. All because of you."

"Pretty sure you handled yourself into that corner, Ryker," Kai said, his 7.50 Strength making him feel as solid as a mountain compared to the swaying bully. "I just moved out of the way. You should try it sometime."

"Shut up!" Ryker roared. Several students stopped to watch, the tension in the hallway spiking. "You cheated. You used an artifact or some kind of illegal booster. There's no way a piece of F-Rank garbage can move like that."

Ryker reached out, grabbing Kai's collar. In the past, this would have been the part where Kai took a trip to the floor.

But as Ryker's hand touched him, Kai's Adaptive Learner talent screamed into life.

[Connection Established: Hostile Intent (Low Sync)] [Analyzing: Flame Burst (Rank C)] [Observation: Mana-flow is unstable due to emotional distress...]

Kai didn't even have to try. He could see the 'Heat-Veins' in Ryker's arm. He knew exactly where the mana was going to burst.

He didn't hit Ryker. He simply reached up and tapped a specific pressure point on Ryker's wrist—the 'Release Valve' for his fire talent.

Ryker's flames instantly snuffed out. He gasped, his arm going limp as if his very talent had been unplugged.

"What... what did you do?" Ryker stammered, backing away.

"I told you," Kai said, his voice quiet but carrying through the silent hallway. "I'm a quick study. You're predictable, Ryker. And being predictable is the fastest way to lose."

He turned and began to walk away, but Ryker wasn't finished. The humiliation was too deep, the stakes too high.

"Rowan!" Ryker screamed. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, jagged crystal—a Berserker Stone. It was a forbidden artifact that boosted talent output by 200% at the cost of permanent core damage.

"Ryker, don't!" a student cried out.

Ryker crushed the stone in his hand. A violent, dark-red flame erupted from his body, turning the air into a shimmering furnace. His eyes turned bloodshot, and his mana-signature spiked into the low B-Rank.

"I'm not going to lose to trash like you again," Ryker growled, his voice distorted by the stone's power. "I challenge you, Kai Rowan. A formal rematch. This afternoon. The Academy Arena. No instructors. No interference."

[Warning: B-Rank Threat Level Detected] [New Quest: The Falling Flame] [Objective: Defeat the 'Berserk' Ryker without revealing Rank-D.]

Kai stopped. He looked back at Ryker, who was now a pillar of unstable, lethal heat. He saw the desperate fear in the boy's eyes, and he saw the crowd—thousands of students waiting to see the "Millennium Man" finally get burned.

But most of all, he saw Elena Frost standing at the end of the hallway, her silver eyes filled with a warning.

Kai sighed, a sarcastic, weary smile playing on his lips.

"A rematch? This afternoon?" Kai asked, shaking his head. "Man, Ryker, you really are a glutton for punishment. Fine. But if I win, you have to pay for my lunch for a month. I've been craving those premium steak wraps."

Ryker roared, a wave of heat slamming into the lockers. "I'm going to kill you!"

As Ryker stomped away, the crowd began to disperse, the news of the rematch spreading like wildfire.

Kai felt a hand on his shoulder. It was cold.

"You're an idiot," Elena whispered, standing beside him.

"I prefer 'confident entertainer,'" Kai replied.

"He's using a Berserker Stone, Kai. He's going to be burning through his very life force. You can't just 'move out of the way' this time. He'll burn the entire arena down."

Kai looked at his hand, then at the golden screen that showed his newly unlocked Talent Mimicry.

"He thinks he's bringing fire to a gunfight," Kai said, his eyes glowing with a faint, dangerous light. "But he forgot one thing."

"What's that?" Elena asked.

"I'm the guy who can steal the gun."
