Chapter 21 - CHAPTER 21 – Talent Theory Class

The morning air at Northwood Academy was crisp, but it felt thin, as if the very atmosphere were holding its breath. Kai Rowan walked through the main hall, his sneakers squeaking against the polished floor. For the first time in eighteen years, he didn't have to worry about being tripped. People didn't just move out of his way; they practically hugged the lockers to avoid brushing against his sleeves.

"I could get used to this," Kai muttered, though his $Intelligence: 9.15$ was screaming that this was the 'quiet before the storm' variety of silence. "If I'd known breaking a government-grade sensor was the key to personal space, I'd have done it years ago."

He checked his hands. The faint violet shimmer from the dream had vanished, but the skin felt... tight. Like a drumhead stretched just a little too far.

"You're late," a voice like a mountain spring whispered.

Elena Frost was leaning against the doorway of Lecture Hall 4. Her silver hair was tied back in a high ponytail, and she was tapping a digital stylus against her tablet with a rhythmic, impatient clack.

"Technically, I'm 'artistically delayed,'" Kai said, offering a weary grin. "Had a weird night. Dreamed I was a tree. A very expensive, very rotting tree."

Elena's eyes narrowed, scanning his face for the sarcasm that usually hid his pain. She stepped closer, and the Empress's Anchor hummed to life. The tightness in Kai's skin eased instantly, the blue-gold resonance of her presence acting like a soothing balm.

"The Sage is in the building, Kai," she said, her voice dropping to a frequency only he could hear. "He's in a closed-door meeting with Vance. They're discussing the 'Anomaly Protocol.' You need to be careful in Aris's class today. Talent Theory isn't just history; it's the Bureau's primary way of spotting 'unstable' cores."

"Aris, huh?" Kai sighed. "The guy who looks like he's lived in a library since the Great Awakening? Don't worry, Ice Queen. I'll be a model student. I might even take notes if I don't fall asleep."

Lecture Hall 4 was a cavernous room filled with tiered mahogany desks and a massive holographic projector at the front. Professor Aris, a man who seemed to be composed entirely of wrinkles and tweed, stood at the podium. He didn't use a microphone; his voice, though soft, carried an odd, resonant weight.

"Most of you believe that Talents are a gift of biology," Aris began, not even looking up from his ancient, leather-bound ledger. "A roll of the genetic dice that determines if you are a king or a cobbler. You are wrong."

He tapped his stylus, and the projector flared to life. It didn't show the standard Rank charts. Instead, it displayed a complex, glowing network of golden lines that looked like a nervous system draped over the entire planet.

"Talents are fragments," Aris continued. "They are shards of a singular entity we call The Great Origin. In the mythology of the Pre-Awakening era, it was called the World Tree. In modern theory, we call it the Prime Source."

Kai sat in the back row, his chin resting on his hand. Beside him, Elena was taking meticulous notes, but her focus was split—one eye on the projector, the other on the golden screen only she and Kai could truly 'feel.'

"The Origin isn't just power," Aris said, his eyes finally sweeping over the class, pausing for a fraction of a second on Kai. "It is a consciousness. It grows. It adapts. And, like any living organism, it has an immune system."

Kai felt a cold spike of adrenaline. The immune system? He thought back to the violet fungus in his dream—the way it had unraveled the golden leaves of the tree.

"When a talent evolves too fast," Aris said, walking toward the center of the hall, "it creates a 'Resonance Breach.' The Origin attempts to reclaim the shard. We call this Core Collapse. In ancient texts, it was referred to as the 'Blight of the Soul.'"

"Professor!" A student in the front row—a B-rank with 'Light Manipulation'—raised his hand. "If the Origin is a consciousness, does that mean it chooses who gets the S-ranks?"

"Choice is a human concept," Aris replied dryly. "The Origin seeks balance. It gives the S-ranks to those who can act as anchors. It gives the F-ranks to those who serve as... fertilizer. But every once in a long age, a 'Wild Shard' appears. A talent that doesn't follow the Rank Logic. A talent that mimics the Origin itself."

The hall went dead silent. Five hundred pairs of eyes turned toward the back row. Kai shifted in his seat, feeling the weight of their scrutiny.

"These 'Wild Shards' are dangerous," Aris said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Because they don't just use mana. They consume it. They are the only ones capable of reaching EX-Rank, the rank beyond SSS. But they almost always succumb to the Blight before they get there."

Under the mahogany table, Elena's hand found Kai's. Her grip was tight, her palm cold. Through the link, Kai felt her heart racing.

He's talking about you, her mana whispered to his. The Wild Shard. Aris knows.

Then Aris has great taste in metaphors, Kai projected back, trying to maintain his sarcastic mental shield. I've always wanted to be a 'Wild Shard.' It sounds like a brand of expensive cologne.

"The Blight," Kai said aloud, interrupting the professor. His $Intelligence: 9.15$ was already cross-referencing Aris's words with the dream. "What does it look like? Does it have a color?"

Aris turned to him, his spectacles catching the light of the projector. "In the few recorded cases, it is described as a violet infection. A hollow light that eats the user's memory and identity until only the Talent remains. A mirror with no one to stand in front of it."

Kai's heart hit his ribs like a sledgehammer. The Mirror of Souls.

"Why tell us this now, Professor?" Elena asked, her voice the perfect mask of academic curiosity. "This isn't in the standard curriculum."

"Because, Miss Frost," Aris said, closing his ledger with a final, echoing thud. "The world is changing. The Dungeon Gates are opening wider. The Violet Sage didn't come here to watch a school tournament. He came here because the Origin is stir-crazy. And when the Origin moves, someone always pays the price."

As the bell rang, signaling the end of the class, the students scrambled to leave, their whispers filling the hall like the buzzing of cicadas. Kai remained in his seat, his eyes fixed on the now-dark projector.

[NOTICE: ANALYTICAL SYNCHRONIZATION COMPLETE]

[Data Source: Professor Aris's Lore]

[Status: Mirror of Souls reacting to 'Origin Logic'...]

"Kai, we need to go," Elena whispered, pulling on his arm. "The Sage's monitors will be checking the mana-fluctuations after that lecture. If you react now—"

"I'm not reacting," Kai said, his voice strained. "The system is."

Suddenly, the golden screen in his vision didn't just flicker. It turned a deep, bruised violet. The ancient runes Kai had seen in his dream began to scroll across the display at a dizzying speed.

[WARNING: ORIGIN PARADOX DETECTED]

[Host has identified the 'Blight'...]

[Condition Met: Self-Awareness of the Parasite]

Kai clutched the edge of the mahogany desk so hard the wood began to crack. A high-pitched ringing filled his ears, and the air around him began to warp, the desks and chairs distorting as if seen through a hall of mirrors.

"Elena, back up," Kai groaned, a single drop of violet blood trickling from his nostril.

[TALENT EVOLUTION TRIGGERED (FORCED)]

[Growth Potential is attempting to 'Adapt' to the Blight...]

[New Skill Unlocked: VIOLET SIGHT]

[Effect: You can now see the 'Strings of the Origin' connecting all talents.]

"Kai!" Elena's frost flared, trying to anchor him, but the violet mana was pushing her back. It wasn't cold, and it wasn't hot. It was a vacuum.

Kai looked up at her, and for a split second, his eyes weren't brown or golden. They were hollow violet pits. Through his new Violet Sight, he didn't see Elena. He saw a massive, glowing blue cord connecting her heart to the ceiling—to the invisible World Tree. And wrapped around that cord was a tiny, pulsing violet parasite.

"It's on you too," Kai whispered, his voice sounding like it was coming from a great distance.

[QUEST UPDATE: THE HARVEST]

[Objective: Sever the strings of the Sage.]

[Time Remaining: ???]

The violet light in the room intensified until it was all Kai could see. And then, a final notification appeared, one that made his $Intelligence: 9.15$ reel in horror.

[SYSTEM NOTICE: THE SAGE IS WATCHING THROUGH YOUR EYES.]

Kai's head snapped toward the back of the lecture hall. There, leaning against the far wall in the shadows, was the Violet Sage. He wasn't moving. He was just smiling, his eyes glowing with the exact same violet fire as Kai's.

"Welcome to the garden, Kai Rowan," the Sage's voice echoed directly inside Kai's brain. "I was wondering when you'd finally open your eyes."

The world tilted, and Kai felt his consciousness being pulled toward the Sage, the golden and violet energies clashing until everything went black.
