Chapter 20 - CHAPTER 20 – Reputation Change

The silence in the Main Courtyard of Northwood Academy didn't just linger; it solidified. It was the kind of silence that usually preceded a natural disaster or a complete collapse of the social order.

Kai Rowan stood in the center of the testing ring, his feet still anchored in the dust of what used to be a Grade-A obsidian floor. His school blazer was a memory, reduced to scorched threads that hung from his shoulders. His skin radiated a faint, golden-white heat, and the air around him shimmered, making him look like a flickering glitch in reality.

Across from him, the Rank Stability Pillar was a smoking wreck. Its orange circuits had gone dark, the internal mana-capacitors melted into useless slag.

"Stable," Kai repeated, his voice a dry rasp that carried easily in the quiet. He looked at the Bureau agent, whose jaw was practically touching his polarized visor. "So... do I get a sticker? Or at least a new shirt? This one was a limited edition."

The agent didn't answer. He was too busy staring at his handheld monitor, which was flashing a series of error codes that essentially translated to: The math has stopped working.

The Violet Sage let out a short, melodic laugh. He stepped off the dais, his amethyst robes whispering against the scorched stone as he approached Kai. The power radiating from the man was immense—a violet pressure that made Kai's newly reinforced $Stamina: 7.95$ feel like a paper wall.

"You have a very strange definition of 'stability,' Kai Rowan," the Sage said, stopping just outside the scorched circle. He reached out a gloved hand, tracing the air where the mana had been sucked into Kai's skin. "Most people resist the pressure. They fight to keep their talent from spilling out. But you? You didn't just hold it. You invited it in."

"I was raised to be a good host, sir," Kai said, his eyes meeting the Sage's violet embers. He didn't blink, even as the Mirror of Souls in his mind throbbed with a rhythmic, parasitic hunger.

The Sage smiled, a gesture that didn't reach his eyes. "The Inter-Academy Tournament begins in two months. Traditionally, we send the S and A-ranks to represent Northwood. But tradition is such a boring teacher. Headmaster Vance?"

Vance, whose face was currently the color of curdled milk, stepped forward. "Yes, Sage?"

"Recalibrate the 'Anomaly' files. I want Kai Rowan tracked by the Bureau's elite monitors," the Sage commanded. "He is no longer an F-rank. He is a 'Variable.' And variables are what make games interesting."

With a final, lingering look at Kai, the Violet Sage turned and vanished into a swirl of violet mist.

The Social Tsunami

The moment the Sage was gone, the "Social Death" Kai had lived in for eighteen years officially ended.

As Kai walked toward the infirmary to get his smoking skin treated, the sea of students parted like he was a walking bomb. The laughter was gone. The snickering about "The Millennium Man" had been replaced by a heavy, suffocating wariness.

"Did you see the pillar?" a B-rank whispered, his voice trembling. "It didn't just pulse. It broke. He broke a Bureau Stressor."

"He's a cheat," another hissed, though she retreated three steps as Kai glanced her way. "There's no way 'Growth Potential' does that. He must be using forbidden mana-implants."

"Look at his eyes," someone else muttered. "They aren't brown anymore. They're... golden."

Kai didn't stop to correct them. His $Intelligence: 9.15$ was processing their whispers as data-streams, analyzing the shift in social dynamics. He wasn't "trash" anymore. He was "the monster." And in a school for heroes, people were much more comfortable with a loser than a monster they didn't understand.

He reached the hallway near the cafeteria and saw Tyler Markson. The C-rank bully who had out-shined Kai for years was sitting on a bench, a medic tending to the blood still trickling from his ears. When Tyler saw Kai, he didn't shout. He didn't even move. He just stared, his eyes filled with a mixture of raw humiliation and an obsessive, jagged hate.

Kai paused, looking at the guy who used to trip him for sport.

"Nice hustle out there, Tyler," Kai said, his voice devoid of its usual sarcasm. "The ground really felt those kinetic impacts."

Tyler's knuckles turned white. "You think you're better than us now? Because the Sage likes your parlor tricks? You're still a freak, Rowan. You're just a freak with a bigger target on his back."

"Growth is a painful process, Tyler," Kai said, walking past him. "I'd suggest you start focusing on yours instead of mine. The next exam won't be as kind."

Kai found Elena in the West Gymnasium's private recovery room. She was sitting on a training mat, her silver hair damp with sweat, her S-rank core still vibrating from the violet field the Sage had used to pin her.

When Kai entered, she stood up instantly, her hand flaring with a cold, blue light. "You're a complete and utter moron."

"Good to see you too, Elena. I missed our warm, fuzzy interactions," Kai said, collapsing onto the mat opposite her. The golden heat finally began to recede, leaving him feeling like a hollowed-out log.

"You didn't just 'absorb' the mana, Kai. You short-circuited a government-grade sensor," Elena said, kneeling in front of him. She reached out, her hands glowing with a soft, medicinal frost as she pressed them against his scorched chest. "The Empress's Anchor barely held. If you had taken one more pulse, your D-rank core would have shattered into a thousand pieces."

"I had to," Kai whispered, closing his eyes as her cold touch numbed the burning. "The Sage... he was looking for the 'Mirror of Souls.' He was testing the resonance. If I had fought the pillar like a normal student, he would have seen the parasite. I had to overwhelm the sensor with 'Potential' to hide the corruption."

Elena's hands paused. Her blue eyes searched his. "You're saying the Sage... he knows about the Snake?"

"He is the Snake, Elena. Or at least, he's the one holding the leash," Kai said. He pulled up his stats, watching the numbers settle.

Stabilized Attributes

[Strength: 7.55]

[Agility: 7.50]

[Intelligence: 9.15]

[Stamina: 7.95]

[Progress to D-Rank Milestone: $25.0\%]

"I hit a twenty-five percent progress milestone in ten seconds of government-sponsored torture," Kai added, a dry smile touching his lips. "At this rate, I'll be C-rank by the time the Inter-Academy Tournament starts."

Elena pulled her hands back, her expression grim. "The Tournament isn't just a competition, Kai. It's a recruitment drive. If the Sage is the one supervising it, he's not looking for heroes. He's looking for 'Fruits' to harvest on a national stage. You outshining the C-ranks today didn't just change your reputation. It made you the main course."

"Then I guess I better make sure I'm too bitter to swallow," Kai said.

They sat in the quiet of the gym for a long time, the S-rank genius and the "Variable" F-rank. The social walls of Northwood Academy were crumbling around them, but the bond of their Secret Promise was the only thing that felt solid.

"People are calling you 'The Anomaly' now," Elena said softly. "The teachers are terrified. They don't know whether to give you a scholarship or put you in a cage."

"I'll take the scholarship," Kai said, standing up. "I hear it comes with better meal plans."

The Dreaming Void

That night, for the first time since the "Practical Exam," Kai fell into a sleep that wasn't a sleep.

He didn't find himself in his room. He found himself standing in a place that looked like a library made of liquid starlight. There were no walls, only endless shelves of glowing books that stretched into an infinite, violet sky.

[Notice: Entering Origin Subconscious]

[Status: Mirror of Souls Active]

Kai walked through the starlight, his $Intelligence: 9.15$ trying to categorize the impossible geometry. He reached out to touch a book, but as his fingers brushed the spine, the book dissolved into a swarm of golden butterflies.

"You're growing faster than the garden intended," a voice whispered.

Kai turned. Standing among the butterflies was a figure that looked exactly like him, but his skin was made of shifting constellations and his eyes were hollow pits of violet fire.

"Who are you?" Kai asked, his voice echoing in the void. "The Mirror? The Snake?"

"I am the potential you haven't dared to spend," the figure said, stepping closer. "Every talent you mimic, every logic you copy... it isn't just a tool, Kai Rowan. It's a weight. You think you're becoming everyone. But eventually, there won't be any 'you' left to hold them."

The figure raised a hand, and suddenly, the starlight library turned into a battlefield. Kai saw Elena, her silver hair stained with blood, frozen in a block of her own ice. He saw the Violet Sage, laughing as he pulled golden threads out of Kai's chest.

And then, he saw the Talent itself.

It wasn't a screen. It was a massive, ancient tree with roots that wrapped around the world and branches that touched the stars. But the tree was rotting. A violet fungus was spreading through the bark, turning the golden leaves into black ash.

"The Origin is hungry," the figure whispered, its face inches from Kai's. "And the more you grow, the more it sees you."

The figure grabbed Kai's throat. Its touch was neither hot nor cold; it was a vacuum.

"Tell me, Kai Rowan," the figure hissed as the violet fungus began to crawl up Kai's arms. "When you've mimicked every talent in the world... whose soul will be left to scream in the dark?"

Kai gasped, his lungs burning. He tried to trigger Focused Breathing, but there was no air. He tried to use Talent Mimicry, but there was nothing to copy but the void.

Just as the violet fire reached his eyes, a single, crystalline blue snowflake drifted down from the infinite sky, touching the fungus.

The dream shattered.

Kai bolted upright in his bed, drenched in sweat, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The room was silent. The moon was still high. But as he looked at his hands, he saw a faint, violet shimmer beneath his skin that hadn't been there before.

[New Passive Quest: Find the Gardener.]

Kai looked at his status screen, which was now flickering between gold and a bruised, bleeding violet.

"The reputation change was the easy part," Kai whispered, his voice trembling in the dark. "The hard part is staying human."
