Chapter 14 - CHAPTER 14 – Another Evolution

The supernova of golden light didn't fade so much as it was inhaled.

One second, the clearing was a blinding furnace of divine radiance; the next, the light snapped back into Kai's chest with the force of a vacuum. The silence that followed was absolute, broken only by the sound of a few scorched leaves fluttering to the blackened earth.

The Mutated Alpha-Hound was gone.

It hadn't just died. There was no carcass, no blood, and certainly no dramatic final whimper. Where the van-sized beast had stood, there was now only a fine, violet-tinted ash being carried away by the dungeon's artificial breeze.

Kai stood in the center of the scorched circle, his hand still outstretched. His tattered blazer was steaming, and his skin was covered in a faint, receding golden glow that looked like circuitry.

[EVOLUTION COMPLETE] [Rank: D – Adaptive Learner]

[Attributes Stabilizing...] Strength: 7.50 Agility: 7.45 Intelligence: 9.00 Stamina: 7.80

"Well," Kai wheezed, his voice sounding like he'd been gargling gravel. "That was... efficient. Does the Academy have a policy on bringing home ashes instead of a tag? I feel like I'm going to lose points for a lack of physical evidence."

"Kai!"

Elena scrambled to her feet, her silver hair a mess and her face streaked with soot. She lunged forward, grabbing his shoulders with enough force to make his 7.80 Stamina grunt in protest. Her blue eyes were wide, darting across his face as if looking for cracks in his skull.

"What was that?" she demanded, her voice a frantic whisper. "The mana signature... it was off the charts! It wasn't just D-Rank. It felt like... like the Origin itself was opening up in this clearing!"

"I think I just had a really productive workout," Kai said, trying to summon a smirk, though his knees felt like they were made of damp cardboard.

"The sensors!" Elena's head snapped toward the Academy towers visible over the obsidian treeline. "The entire reconnaissance squad probably saw that. Vance is going to have a tactical team here in minutes! We need to—"

She stopped. She looked at Kai, then at the empty space where a B+ Rank monster had just vanished. Then she looked at the silver coin that had finally stopped glowing in Kai's pocket.

"The link," she muttered, her analytical S-Rank mind clicking back into gear. "The link is still active. I can... I can mask the residual heat. But you need to act like you're dying. Right now."

"Acting like I'm dying? Elena, I've been practicing that for eighteen years. It's my primary hobby," Kai said. He didn't have to act much; the "Origin Hunger" had left him feeling like a hollowed-out shell.

He collapsed. Not a graceful, heroic fall, but a genuine, face-first-into-the-dirt thud.

Elena didn't waste a second. She unleashed a massive burst of her own mana, coating the entire clearing in a thick, shimmering layer of crystalline ice. To any remote sensor, it would look like a massive S-Rank explosion—the Ice Empress going all out to save her "useless" partner from a high-tier threat.

"Stay down," she whispered, kneeling over him and placing her cold hands on his back to simulate the "frost-dampening" technique she'd told the faculty about.

Minutes later, the high-pitched whine of mana-thrusters echoed from the sky. An Academy extraction skiff descended, its searchlights cutting through the purple mist of Sector 7. Commander Graw leapt from the craft before it even touched the ground, his B-Rank 'Force Field' flaring.

"Frost! Rowan!" Graw bellowed, his eyes widening at the sight of the frozen wasteland. "Report! What happened here?"

Elena looked up, her expression a perfect mask of icy, exhausted composure. "A mutation, Commander. A B+ Rank Alpha-Hound. It was... unexpected. It bypassed the perimeter sensors and attacked while I was tagging the vent."

Graw looked at the ash-stained ice. "B+ Rank? Where is it?"

"I neutralized it," Elena said, her voice dropping into that chillingly arrogant tone she used for the faculty. "It forced me to tap into my core's reserve. I'm afraid I've depleted the local mana-vent as well. There's nothing left to scan."

Graw looked at Kai's "unconscious" form, then back at Elena. He looked suspicious—deeply so—but the sheer volume of frost-mana in the air was undeniable. It smelled like her. It felt like her.

"And Rowan?" Graw asked, poking Kai's leg with his boot.

"He's in a mana-shock coma," Elena lied without blinking. "He tried to distract it while I channeled. He's... remarkably stubborn for someone so weak."

"Stubborn is one word for it," Graw grumbled. "He's a liability. We're aborting the test for this sector. Load him up. The Headmaster is going to want a full debriefing on this 'mutation.'"

The Academy infirmary smelled like antiseptic and failure.

Kai lay on a cot, his eyes closed, listening to the rhythmic beep of a mana-monitor. He was supposed to be in a "coma," but his Tireless Mind was working overtime.

The D-Rank evolution had changed things. The world felt... loud. Not just the sounds, but the flow of energy. He could feel the mana-monitor drawing power from the wall; he could feel the nurse's C-Rank 'Healing Touch' hovering in the hallway.

But most of all, he could feel the Adaptive Learner talent. It wasn't just a passive bar anymore. It felt like a library of templates, all waiting for him to fill the pages.

Late that night, the door hissed open. The cold air gave her away before she even reached the bed.

"You can stop pretending to be a vegetable now," Elena said, her voice weary. "The nurse is on break."

Kai opened one eye. "Is 'vegetable' an F-Rank or an E-Rank? I want to make sure I'm being accurate."

Elena sat on the edge of the cot. She looked drained. "Vance is furious. He knows my mana-dump was a distraction. He can't prove what you did, but he's already moved your 'Research Office' appointment to tomorrow morning. And this time, it won't just be a pulse-core. He's bringing in a 'Truth Seeker' from the capital."

"A Truth Seeker?" Kai sat up, the sheets sliding off his chest. "Those guys can read memories, can't they? That's... suboptimal."

"It's a death sentence for your secret," Elena said. She looked at him, her eyes searching his. "Kai... what happened out there? When you touched that Hound, the mana didn't just break. It belonged to you. I felt the link. For a second, I wasn't just linked to an E-Rank. I was linked to something... endless."

Kai looked at his hand. He remembered the feeling of the Mutated Alpha's mana—the jagged, artificial 'Snake' signature. He hadn't just blocked it. He had understood it.

"It's the new rank," Kai said softly. "Adaptive Learner. It's not just about copying moves anymore. It's about... understanding the logic behind the talent itself."

He reached out, his hand hovering near Elena's shoulder. "Can I try something? It might feel a bit weird."

"Weird is the new normal with you," she sighed.

Kai closed his eyes. He didn't trigger 'Copy Mechanic.' Instead, he reached out with the core of his D-Rank talent. He touched the edge of her S-Rank 'Ice Empress' aura.

In his mind, a golden notification manifested.

[Observation: Ice Empress (Rank S)] [Analyzing Talent Logic: Thermal Depletion & Crystalline Structure...] [Compatibility: Low (9.2%)]

[Hidden Passive Activated: Origin Resonance] [Bypassing Compatibility Requirement...]

Kai didn't just copy a shard. He felt the cold. Not as an external temperature, but as a part of his own circulatory system. He felt the way Elena's core spun—the precise, frozen geometry of it.

He didn't manifest ice. He mimicked the intent.

His hand, resting near her shoulder, suddenly turned as cold as a mountain peak. A faint frost began to creep across the hospital gown.

Elena gasped, jumping back. "You... you just used Ice Empress. Without the link? Without a skill activation?"

Kai stared at his hand. He didn't feel like he had used a skill. He felt like, for a split second, he was an S-Rank Ice talent user.

"I didn't copy a move, Elena," Kai whispered, his heart thumping against his ribs.

He looked at her, then toward the wall, where he could feel the lingering mana-traces of the nurse who had been there earlier—a 'Healing Touch' user.

He reached out his other hand toward a small cut on his arm from the forest. He visualized the nurse's mana—the warm, soothing flow of it.

The cut closed in seconds.

[Healing Touch (Rank C) – Mimicked]

Kai's eyes went wide. The golden screen flickered with a message that made the room feel very, very small.

[ADAPTIVE LEARNER: Level 1] [The user has transcended 'Copying.'] [Trait Unlocked: Talent Mimicry.] [You can now mimic the fundamental Talent of any individual you have established a 'Deep Connection' with.]

Kai looked at Elena, his sarcastic mask completely shattered.

"I don't just copy the moves anymore, Elena," Kai said, his voice trembling with the realization of what he had become. "I can mimic the Talents themselves. If I touch someone... I can become them."

Elena stared at him, the frost in the room intensifying until the mana-monitor began to crack. She realized what this meant. If the world found out, Kai wouldn't be 'harvested' or 'dissected.' He would be worshipped as a god or hunted as a world-ending plague.

And then, Kai looked toward the window.

In the reflection of the glass, he didn't just see himself. He saw a flicker of a third person. A tall man in a janitor's uniform with violet eyes, standing right behind his reflection, smiling.

"The harvest," the reflection whispered in his mind. "It's so much bigger than I thought."

Kai realized with a jolt of terror that the 'Snake' hadn't been trying to kill him. They had been waiting for this. They had been waiting for the F-Rank trash to become the ultimate mirror.

[Warning: Incoming Memory Overwrite.] [Unknown Talent detected: 'The Mirror of Souls.']

Kai clutched his head as a new surge of power exploded in his brain. "Elena... I think I just copied something I shouldn't have."
