Chapter 17 - CHAPTER 17 – Suspicion

The metallic click of the arena's blast doors sealing shut echoed like a guillotine blade. One by one, the massive mana-shields surrounding the combat ring pulsed with a deep, authoritative violet light—the universal signal for a "Lockdown Interrogation."

Kai stood in the center of the scorched obsidian, the tattered remains of his shirt fluttering in the artificial draft. He could feel the eyes of the entire student body pressing down from the stands, but they were distant, muffled by the rising mana-pressure in the ring. The only things that felt real were the two men approaching him and the pulsating red warning on his golden screen.

[WARNING: BUREAU OF TALENT INTEGRITY PROTOCOLS ACTIVE] [System Status: Extreme Stealth Mode Required]

"The displacement is impossible, Headmaster," Commander Graw repeated, his voice tight. He didn't look at Kai; he was obsessed with the holographic readout on his hand-held scanner. "Look at the thermal dissipation curve. The fire was diverted, not resisted. It's a 98% match for a high-density crystalline barrier."

Headmaster Vance stopped three paces from Kai. He didn't use a scanner. He didn't need one. He was an A-rank with a 'Pressure Sensing' talent, and right now, he was using it to weigh Kai's very existence.

"Mr. Rowan," Vance said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Usually, when an F-rank survives a B-rank Berserker strike, we call it a miracle. But the Bureau doesn't believe in miracles. They believe in fraud. They believe in illegal artifacts. And they especially believe in 'Anomalies' that threaten the stability of our ranking system."

"I was always told I was an overachiever, sir," Kai said, though his lungs felt like they were being crushed by the Headmaster's aura. He forced a shaky, sarcastic grin. "Maybe I just have a very high heat tolerance? My mom always said I was a hot-head."

Vance's eyes narrowed. "Your humor is losing its effectiveness, Kai. Commander, perform a Deep-Tissue Resonator Scan. Now."

Graw stepped forward, a metallic device in his hand glowing with a clinical, white light. This wasn't the standard school scanner. This was a Resonator—a device designed to force a talent to manifest its "True Frequency" by vibrating the user's mana-veins.

Kai's heart hammered. If Graw triggered that device, the D-rank (Adaptive Learner) core would vibrate at a frequency that no F-rank could mimic. The cloak would shatter.

Suddenly, a sharp, crystalline crack echoed through the arena.

A wave of absolute-zero frost surged across the obsidian floor, stopping exactly one inch from Commander Graw's boots. The temperature in the arena plummeted so fast that the moisture in the air turned into a fine, sparkling mist.

"The resonance you're looking for is mine, Commander."

Elena Frost stepped into the ring. She didn't walk; she glided, her silver hair whipping in a localized blizzard of her own making. She looked every bit the Ice Empress, her S-rank aura flaring with such intensity that it physically pushed back the Headmaster's pressure.

"Frost?" Vance turned, his brow furrowing. "This is a Bureau investigation. Step back."

"I will not," Elena said, her voice a winter gale. She stopped beside Kai, her hand resting lightly on his shoulder. The touch was freezing, but through the Mana Link, Kai felt a sudden, surge of "Static Interference" flooding his channels.

[NOTICE: EXTERNAL MASKING DETECTED] [Elena Frost is flooding your core with 'Noise' data]

"I was paired with Rowan in Sector 7," Elena said, looking Vance directly in the eye. "During our link, I discovered that his 'Growth Potential' has a unique, albeit useless, side effect: it acts as a secondary capacitor for my mana. The 'displacement' you saw wasn't his talent. It was a residual Frost-Shield I placed on him during our joint training. He's been carrying my mana-traces for forty-eight hours."

Graw frowned, looking at his scanner. "An F-rank capacitor? That's unheard of."

"It's why his talent is ranked F," Elena countered, her voice dripping with aristocratic disdain. "It doesn't generate power; it merely holds a fraction of someone else's until it leaks out. He didn't neutralize Ryker's fire. I did, through him, because I didn't want the arena floor destroyed by a Berserker Stone."

The logic was flawless, but it was a gamble. She was essentially claiming she had cheated for him, an offense that would cost her prestige, but not her rank.

Vance looked at Kai, then at Elena's hand on his shoulder. He could see the frost creeping across Kai's tattered shirt. "A capacitor, you say? Commander, check the resonance again. Match it against the Frost signature."

Graw adjusted the device. It pulsed.

[Status: Stealth Mode Synchronized with External Source]

The device emitted a soft, green chime. "It's a match, sir. 99% Frost-type resonance. The displacement wasn't a talent activation; it was a passive dissipation of S-rank frost-mana."

Vance didn't look relieved. If anything, the suspicion in his eyes deepened. He looked at Kai like a man who knew he was being played but couldn't see the strings.

"Very well," Vance said, his voice a low growl. "If the Ice Empress wishes to claim responsibility for this 'miracle,' we will let the Bureau's report reflect that. But understand this, Mr. Rowan: the link will be severed tonight. You will be re-scanned in forty-eight hours. If a single decimal point of your rank has moved without Elena's influence... you won't just be expelled. You'll be erased."

Vance turned on his heel and strode out of the ring, followed by a confused and frustrated Graw. The blast doors hissed open, and the lockdown lights faded back to a neutral white.

The crowd began to filter out, the silence replaced by a low, buzzing roar of gossip. Kai felt the pressure lift, and he nearly collapsed.

"Stay standing," Elena whispered, her hand still tight on his shoulder. "They're still watching from the cameras. Walk. Now."

The Academy grounds were bathed in the long, orange shadows of sunset. Kai walked with Elena toward the student gardens—a place usually reserved for A-rank meditation, and therefore, the quietest spot on campus.

Kai felt like a walking bruise. Every muscle in his body was vibrating with the aftershocks of the D-rank evolution and the Talent Mimicry he'd used. His 7.80 Stamina was the only thing keeping him upright, but even that was flagging.

"That was... close," Kai said, his voice barely a whisper once they were deep within the bioluminescent hedges. "Thanks for the save, Ice Queen. Though I think 'magical battery' is a bit of a demotion from 'sarcastic sidekick.'"

Elena didn't answer. She kept walking until they reached the center of the garden, a secluded alcove beneath a weeping willow that glowed with a faint, violet light.

She turned around. The blizzard was gone. The Ice Empress mask was gone. In its place was a look of such raw, focused intensity that Kai took an instinctive step back.

"You're not a capacitor," she said. Her voice wasn't cold; it was trembling.

"Elena, look, I can explain the—"

"I felt it, Kai!" she interrupted, her silver hair whipping around her face. "When Graw used the Resonator, I didn't just flood you with 'noise.' I tried to feel your core to see if I could stabilize it. But I couldn't find it."

She stepped into his personal space, her blue eyes searching his with a terrifying clarity.

"I didn't find an F-rank pool, and I didn't find a D-rank core," she whispered, her hand reaching out and grabbing his wrist—not for a link, but to hold him in place. "I felt a vacuum. A void that was reaching out and eating my resonance. I felt the logic of my own talent being stripped down and analyzed."

Kai went still. The golden screen in his vision flickered.

[D-RANK (ADAPTIVE LEARNER) - PROGRESS: 12.5%] [Observation: Deep Connection status compromised]

"You didn't survive that fire because of my frost, Kai," Elena said, her grip tightening. "You survived it because you stole it. You copied the fundamental logic of an S-rank talent and used it at a level that should have killed you."

She leaned in, her forehead almost touching his, her breath hitching.

"Who are you, Kai Rowan? Because no one—not even the legendary SSS-ranks from the Great Awakening—could do what I just felt. You're not evolving. You're... you're something else. Something the world doesn't have a name for yet."

Kai looked at her, the sarcastic quip dying in his throat. For the first time, he didn't see the school genius or the ice-cold elite. He saw a girl who was genuinely terrified of the monster she was helping to create.

He opened his mouth to lie—to tell her it was just a weird mutation of 'Growth Potential'—but the words wouldn't come.

Suddenly, Kai's vision blurred. A massive, white-hot spike of pain drove through his skull, and a new notification, written in those ancient, bleeding runes, erupted across his sight.

Kai groaned, his knees finally hitting the grass. He looked up at Elena, his eyes glowing not with gold or blue, but with a terrifying, hollow violet light—the same color as the man from the library.

"Elena..." Kai gasped, reaching out. "Something... something is inside the talent."

Elena stared at him, her horror mounting as she realized the boy she had just saved was no longer entirely there.

"Kai?" she whispered, backing away as a dark, oily mana began to seep from his skin. "What is happening to you?"

Would you like me to...

The question was cut short as Kai's body arched, a silent scream tearing from his throat, and the bioluminescent plants around them began to wither and turn to ash.
