Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Tides of Pressure.

The morning was quiet—too quiet.

Mireya felt it as soon as she entered the hospital.

A strange tension lingered in the air, subtle but heavy.

People moved around her normally, but their eyes flicked in brief glances.

The kind that made her chest tighten.

Jae noticed immediately, walking beside her.

"Something's off," he murmured.

She nodded, biting her lip.

"Yes. But we handle it quietly, together."

Their workday started with normal tasks—cleaning, delivering supplies, and assisting patients.

But whispers returned, more deliberate this time.

"This is just the beginning," a voice said nearby.

Mireya stiffened but focused on her duties.

She wouldn't give them the satisfaction of noticing her fear.

Jae stayed close, occasionally brushing a reassuring hand against hers.

She appreciated the small gestures, small anchors in the growing storm.

At lunch, they sat outside the staff lounge.

The soft hum of the city above them helped, but not completely.

"I hate how some people can't just mind their own business," Mireya said, sipping tea.

"I know," Jae replied. "But that's their problem, not ours."

She frowned. "Easier said than done."

He smiled faintly. "Then we'll make it easier together."

Later, a colleague approached—someone she didn't know well.

"Excuse me," the woman said. "Are you Mireya?"

"Yes," she replied cautiously.

"I just wanted to… apologize," the woman said. "I didn't mean to contribute to the whispers."

Mireya blinked, surprised.

"That… means a lot," she said.

"You're strong," the woman continued. "It's inspiring."

Mireya felt a tiny warmth in her chest.

Even amidst tension, allies existed.

Jae waited by the elevator for her that afternoon.

"Ready to go home?" he asked.

Mireya nodded.

"Yes. But first… we need to plan how we handle tomorrow."

Jae raised an eyebrow.

"Tomorrow?"

"The meeting with the board," she said quietly. "They want to discuss the dynamics between staff members. Us included."

He exhaled. "Sounds like a storm."

"Exactly," she said. "And we need to navigate it together."

That evening, they walked along the rainy streets again, umbrella shielding them from droplets.

"Do you think we're ready?" Mireya asked, glancing at him.

"Ready to face the outside world?" he asked. "We've faced worse than whispers. We've faced fear. We've faced uncertainty. Yes—we're ready."

She smiled, leaning lightly against him.

"Good," she whispered.

At home, Mireya tried to relax, but her phone buzzed.

A new message.

People are watching. Choose carefully.

Her heart sank.

"Jae…" she murmured.

He took the phone, reading quickly.

"Looks like the storm isn't done yet," he said, his jaw tightening.

"But we face it. Together."

She nodded, gripping his hand.

Together. That word felt like armor.

The next morning, Mireya dressed carefully, choosing clothes that were professional but not flashy.

She wanted confidence to shine, not arrogance.

Jae arrived, carrying two coffees.

"Fuel for the battle," he said, handing one to her.

She chuckled. "You're ridiculous."

"And effective," he added with a grin.

The board meeting was tense.

Eyes flicked between her and Jae, whispers floating like shadows.

But Mireya held her head high.

When it was her turn to speak, she did so calmly:

"I understand there are concerns about staff dynamics. I want to clarify—my work, my relationships, and my presence here are based on professionalism, respect, and honesty. I am not here to disrupt anyone's work, and I expect the same courtesy in return."

Silence followed.

Then one board member nodded slowly.

"Well said," they said. "Professional and firm."

Mireya felt her chest lift slightly.

Even amidst tension, acknowledgment mattered.

After the meeting, Jae and Mireya walked outside, letting the rain wash over their shoulders.

"You were amazing," he said softly.

"I was scared," she admitted.

"You didn't show it," he replied. "And that counts."

She laughed quietly, the sound light and freeing.

A small puddle splashed near her feet.

She shrieked, jumping back.

Jae laughed, catching her hand. "Still startled easily, huh?"

"Don't mock me!" she protested, smiling despite herself.

That night, Mireya wrote in her notebook:

Storms will come. Whispered judgments will come. But strength comes from standing—together.

She closed it, looking at Jae with a quiet smile.

"We're stronger than we realize," she said.

"Stronger than anyone thinks," he replied, kissing her forehead gently.

Outside, the rain continued, relentless but soothing.

Inside, they found calm.

Together.
