Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Ink under my fingernails

Serana Vale had learned early the meaning of pain in life.

It sat on her chest every morning she woke up, facing her apartment ceiling, which was cracked and leaking due to the lack of maintenance. Her whole apartment looked like a rat hole—which was practically a room with a small bathroom and kitchen infused in it. The space was so small she had to economize her way of living, even give out some of her old belongings, just to have more space. She could do nothing but let out a heavy sigh—hoping one day she will escape her own life.

She reached to her bedside table, grabbing her sketchbook, art was the only thing she had to console herself, and pour out her heavy heart and emotions. Her fingers were stained with ink, permanent shadows under her fingernails. She looked at her sketchbook with heavy eyes wanting to pour out her own soul, but she knew she had to get out of bed, or else she'd be late for her first day of work. That was something she wasn't ready for, especially with her new beginning.

Although her apartment had little space and was really old, she still managed to fit in her belongings and kept it clean, she loved having her space clean, she wasn't the dirty and lazy type. She took a shower and got dressed, she wore a black knee-length dress with a v-cut neck, a longer black coat and minimal jewelry, then put her dark brown hair in a bun, and was ready to leave for the train station, she didn't like makeup that much so she just put on mascara and applied red lipstick. She looked at herself once more in the mirror and whispered "you've got this Serena". She took simple black coffee as breakfast, as that was the only thing she had. After she got out of her apartment building, she reached to get her phone in her handbag, just to see the emails and missed calls she had gotten from St.Mary's hospital.

She heaved a heavy sigh, she had almost forgotten she still had to pay out the balance for her mother's hospital fees, so she could get discharged. She was relieved it was a balance of just one thousand dollars and she would be able to pay back after she had her first pay(hopefully) and had her latest piece sold. She was snapped out of her thoughts by the hustling and bustling noise of the city as she approached the subway. After she got off the train, she decided to take a taxi to her "office", although it was a walkable distance, she didn't want to get her new heels wet, since it was still the winter season.

On getting out of the taxi, Serenmet with the reality that this would be her life now. She realized she would now become a typical "9 to 5" worker, and behind those glass doors stood something new. She was snapped out of her thoughts when someone bumped into her, it was when she realized she had been standing in the middle of the path, staring at the building, she looked at her watch and realised she was going to be late if she didn't go inside. She joined the group of people rushing into the building.
