Death Strom — Chapter 4: The Portal That Won't Let Go

Dawn came quietly.

A pale mist rolled across the hills, washing the training fields in silver. The village beneath the cliffs stirred with the low hum of early voices, footsteps, and the smell of morning firewood.

Inside a small wooden room, Usuki lay awake, staring at the cracked ceiling. He hadn't slept. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the blue shimmer of the portal fading away— the only road home vanishing before his reach.

His chest tightened again. Mom... Sakura...

He whispered their names like prayers that could somehow cross worlds.

The door creaked open.

Kanshiki stepped in, arms folded, his long red hair tied back loosely.

"You're up early."

Usuki sat up slowly. "Didn't sleep much."

Kanshiki's gaze softened. "Understandable." He leaned against the wall. "I tested the energy residue where the portal collapsed. What happened last night wasn't ordinary. The portal didn't reject you—it was protecting you."

Usuki blinked. "Protecting me? From what?"

"I don't know yet." Kanshiki's voice was quiet but steady. "But whatever energy you carry, it doesn't belong in your timeline anymore."

Usuki stared at his hands. They looked normal — pale, calloused from café work — yet he could still feel a faint pulse under his skin, like something alive was humming quietly inside.

He clenched his fists. "So you're saying... something took me out of my world?"

"Or perhaps," Kanshiki said, "something called you here."

The words struck deep, and silence fell between them.

Later that day, Kanshiki took Usuki up the same hill overlooking the training grounds. The field below shimmered with fire, lightning, and smoke as young ninjas trained under mentors' eyes.

"See them?" Kanshiki said. "Every one of them is bound by a single element — their choice defines them for life."

Usuki nodded weakly. "Yeah… you said that yesterday. Focus, stance, flow, right?"

"Correct. The essence flows where the mind leads. But your case is different — you came from a world without essence, yet your body didn't shatter when you crossed the barrier."

Usuki frowned. "What do you mean?"

"Normal humans can't survive raw essence exposure. They dissolve. You didn't."

The wind shifted, carrying embers from the training fires.

Usuki swallowed hard. "So... what does that mean?"

Kanshiki looked at him — that sharp, calm gaze of a man who'd seen too many mysteries.

"It means your body has adapted to this world instantly. And there's only one kind of being who's ever done that before."

Usuki's heartbeat quickened. "Who?"

Kanshiki's lips curved into a faint, grim smile.

"They called him... the Dream Seeker."

The name hung in the air like thunder before a storm.

Usuki took a step back. "The guy who almost destroyed the world?! You're saying I'm like him!?"

"I'm saying there's a connection," Kanshiki replied firmly. "Don't jump to fear. The past repeats itself in strange ways. Maybe destiny doesn't make mistakes — it simply rewrites."

Usuki shook his head, his voice rising. "No, that's insane! I'm just a normal guy! I had a life, a job, a family— I don't want to be part of this world!"

He dropped to his knees, gripping the dirt until it stained his palms.

"I just want to go home..."

Kanshiki stepped closer, kneeling beside him. His tone lowered — not as a warrior, but as a teacher.

"Listen, Usuki. The moment you touched that portal, your life changed. You may not understand it now, but this world brought you here for balance. If you run from it, you'll die confused. If you face it, maybe... you'll find the truth of who you are."

Usuki looked up, his brown eyes trembling between fear and defiance.

"And if I don't want that truth?"

Kanshiki stood, turning toward the mountains. "Then the truth will find you anyway."

A flash of lightning cracked across the sky — as if the world itself had answered.

The wind howled through the valley, carrying the faint whisper of ancient voices.

Usuki shivered. Somewhere, deep within him, that same hum of unseen power pulsed again — like a heartbeat that didn't belong to him.
