Death Strom — Chapter 8: Flames That Remember
The night was quiet, but the air was heavy — the kind of silence that made every flame crackle louder than usual.
Usuki sat by the campfire again, staring into it like he always did after training. But tonight, the fire didn't look normal.
It moved like it was alive.
Inside the flame — faint outlines began to appear.
A man standing over a mountain of ash, eyes glowing in blue and purple, the sky behind him turning black.
Usuki blinked — and the image vanished.
"What… what was that?"
A rustle came from the darkness.
Kanshiki stepped forward, his cloak brushing against the dirt. Freak followed behind, red lightning faintly sparking around his wrist.
Kanshiki looked at the fire. His eyes narrowed.
"So… it's finally reacting."
Usuki turned to him. "Reacting? You mean my flames?"
Kanshiki nodded slowly.
"That color. That energy… it doesn't belong to a normal Ishuko flame."
He knelt beside the fire, his reflection flickering in the glow.
"Usuki, what you just saw — that man — he isn't a dream. He's a memory."
Usuki's heartbeat quickened. "A memory? Of who?"
Kanshiki's expression darkened.
"Of the man known as the Dream Seeker."
Freak froze mid-step. "Sensei… you can't mean that Dream Seeker…"
Kanshiki looked at both of them. His voice was calm, but his words were heavy.
"Yes. The same one who almost destroyed the world 25,000 years ago."
He turned toward Freak.
"And just like you, Freak… he was a Kisuke."
Usuki's eyes widened. "Wait— Dream Seeker… was from your clan?!"
Freak's usual smirk faded. "He was more than that. He was the strongest Kisuke in history."
His hand clenched into a fist, red lightning flashing across his knuckles.
"His power came from something beyond the seven elements. Something even the clans fear to speak of."
Usuki's voice trembled. "You mean… Death."
Kanshiki nodded gravely. "Exactly. The Death Element. The first and last of its kind."
The wind howled through the trees, sending sparks into the air.
Kanshiki continued, his tone heavy with respect and fear.
"Dream Seeker awakened the Eternal Tenshoudha, a power that fused all elements — but it consumed him. They say he tried to create a new world using Death itself… and failed. The Clandaea clan sealed him beneath the earth — deep inside the Elemental Prison."
Usuki looked back into the fire. The image of the man flickered again — but this time, the man's gaze met his.
And for a moment… it felt like the Dream Seeker smiled at him.
Usuki whispered, "Why do I feel like… I've seen him before?"
Kanshiki turned away.
"Maybe because the flame inside you… carries his echo."
Freak looked shocked. "Sensei, you mean—"
Kanshiki: "Yes. His power didn't die completely. Some fragments survived, waiting for someone… who could carry his will without losing themselves."
He looked at Usuki — his eyes sharp, yet filled with concern.
"That someone… might be you."
Usuki's hand trembled as the fire danced brighter, wrapping around his arm for a brief second — burning, yet strangely comforting.
The whispers returned:
"Flame… seeker…"
Usuki clutched his chest, breathing hard.
Kanshiki and Freak stood ready — but they didn't move.
Because deep down… they both knew this was only the beginning.
