Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

SATURDAY

I woke up in quite a bad mood today, and it's not because of my alarm clock this time. I woke up to these loud, annoying noises. It sounded like World War VI was going down right in front of my house.

I did everything I could to preserve my sanity. Locking the windows, closing the curtains— I even tried some of those silly TikTok hacks, but the noise was just unbearable.

I eventually decided to go check, and I was surprised to see that a family was moving into the house next door, AND all that racket was coming from their farm-truck!!?

Don't get me wrong. It's nice to have new faces around, but can't you do it in peace? Ugh.

There was nothing else to do, so I thought I might just sit outside and look around. And immediately, something else caught my attention—

A lady in a familiar pink camo bonet, heading to the next house, mom!

Being friendly and adventurous, I guessed she was going to welcome them. I know you're going to be surprised when I say this, but I didn't mind at all. In fact, I tagged along...

... But of course, it was another life decision to regret.

I was SO not prepared to see them— the Pollards! Out of all the neighbourhoods in New York, it had to be MINE!

The funny thing is, they've actually never done anything to offend me. It's just Bethany Pollard, their only child, and my childhood nemesis— and we go way back... unfortunately.

It all began long ago, when mom met Bethany's mom on a plane in Atlanta. Imagine how crazy it is! From that ONE discussion, our families became so close. It's low-key giving Shakespeare-type destiny if you ask me, no offense.

That's not all though! The real tea? Bethany and I have hated each other since the first day we met.

It was at Pre-school, and she started it. The way I remember it, she ate my lunch and ripped my drawing, for absolutely NO reason. It was obviously intentional, and you know what annoyed me the most? She looked so satisfied after what she did. UGH, THAT STUPID GRIN. I'm telling you, that girl was literally floating into Lala-land.

I wasn't having it though. I tore her sketchpad to bits, spilled her drink 'accidentally', and ate her lunch too. I've always been petty, LMFAO.

At some point, we got physical. Girl, faces were slapped, clothes were ripped, and crayons were thrown. It didn't last long though, teachers separated us. I felt like I was on a reality show, I won't even lie.

Whatever. Ever since that incident, we've been arch enemies. I don't plan to apologise to her, ever, and I know she isn't either.

And then… she saw me. Of course she did.

That same stupid grin slowly crept onto her face, and I swear, it felt like I was five years old again, ready to throw hands over a juice box.

Bethany Pollard.

Still annoying. Still dramatic. Still very much a problem... but not as much as me though.

I sighed, already tired, and crossed my arms. "You've got to be kidding me."

She tilted her head slightly, like she was studying me, and then she smiled wider.

"Wow," she said. "You still exist?"

Oh. It was going to be one of those days, and everybody knows, I'm ALWAYS ready to READ.

I raised an eyebrow. "And you still look like a broken rip-off Barbie doll? That's unfortunate."

Her smile didn't drop. If anything, it got worse. Like, girl... are you trying to replace the sun? Global warming much?

"I see you're still as rude as ever."

"And I see you're still as annoying as ever," I shot back.

For a moment, we just stood there, staring at each other like nothing had changed— because honestly, nothing had. Moving next door? Yeah… this was going to be a disaster.
