Chapter 4 - WHISPERS IN THE AIR

The morning sun streamed into the Carrington Group building, painting golden lines across the marble floor.

Luna walked in with her usual calm stride, yet her thoughts were far from steady.

"Selina Cross had been in her mind all night.

No matter how hard she tried, the memory of that unsettling smile and the strange pull she felt would not let her rest.

"Good morning, Luna," Jenna said as she hurried up beside her, balancing a stack of files.

"Morning," Luna replied, forcing a smile.

"You look tired. Long night?" Jenna asked.

"I could not sleep," Luna admitted. "I kept thinking about yesterday.

Jenna lowered her voice. "About Selina?

"Yes," Luna said. "There is something about her.

"Something I cannot explain.

"Jenna leaned closer.

"You are not the only one.

After she left, everyone was uneasy.

Even Damien kept glancing over his shoulder like he felt watched.

Luna pressed the elevator button, her lips tightening.

"Do you think she will come back?

Jenna shrugged.

"If she does, I hope she at least brings an appointment.

The way she just appeared felt wrong.

The elevator doors opened, and they stepped inside.

Luna stood silently, her eyes fixed on the glowing floor numbers.

She tried to push away the rising sense of dread, but it clung to her.

When she entered her office, Damien was already waiting by her desk.

He turned toward her, his expression serious.

"You look troubled," he said.

"I am," Luna admitted.

 "I keep thinking about Selina.

"Did you learn anything more about her?

Damien nodded slowly, "I made a few calls.

People know her name, but not much else.

No background details, no clear records.

It is like she appeared out of nowhere.

"That is not possible," Luna said firmly.

 "Everyone has a past.

"Not Selina Cross, apparently," Damien replied.

"She is a ghost in the system.

Luna sat down, her voice dropping to a whisper.

"Damien, when she shook my hand, I felt something.

It was sharp, like my skin recognized her presence before my mind could.

It was not natural.

Damien leaned forward.

"What do you mean, not natural?

"I do not know," Luna admitted.

"It was like, like an instinct warning me.

My body reacted even before I understood why.

Damien studied her closely.

"That is serious.

If your instincts are telling you something, you should not ignore it.

A soft knock on the door interrupted them.

Jenna peeked in.

"There is a delivery for you, Luna.

"No sender listed.

"A delivery?" Luna frowned, "Bring it in.

Jenna placed a sleek black envelope on her desk, then stepped back nervously.

"I will be at my desk if you need me.

Luna picked up the envelope and ran her fingers along the edge.

The paper was thick, expensive.

She slid it open, revealing a single folded card inside.

She opened it slowly.

The words written in neat cursive made her heart stop.

"We will meet again soon.

No name.

 No signature.

 Nothing but the message.

Damien's jaw tightened.

"Let me guess.

 "Selina?

"Who else?" Luna whispered.

"Where did this come from?" Damien asked Jenna, who still stood at the door.

"It was just sitting on the reception desk when I arrived.

No one saw who left it," Jenna explained.

Luna's hands trembled slightly as she placed the card down.

"She wants me to know she is watching.

Damien's expression hardened.

"This is not normal.

I do not like it.

Neither did Luna.

The day dragged on, but the envelope sat on her desk like a shadow.

Every time she glanced at it, unease spread through her chest.

Meetings blurred, conversations passed, yet her thoughts circled only one name.

 "Selina Cross.

By afternoon, Luna decided to step out for fresh air.

She walked down the street, her heels clicking against the pavement, but even outside the office, the feeling followed her.

A chill slid across her skin though the sun was bright.

She paused near a café window, scanning the crowd.

"Luna?

She turned sharply. Damien had followed her, concerned in his eyes.

"You should not be walking alone," he said.

"I needed air," Luna admitted.

"But it feels worse out here. Like she is near.

Damien looked around.

 "Do you see her?

"No," Luna said, her voice low.

"But I feel her. It is strange, Damien.

Like she is everywhere and nowhere at once.

My instincts keep telling me to stay alert.

Damien placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Then stay alert.

"Do not ignore it.

Back inside the building, whispers greeted her.

Colleagues huddled in groups, their voices low.

When Luna walked past, the whispers stopped.

"Why are they acting like this?" she asked Jenna later.

"Because they are afraid," Jenna said.

"Ever since Selina appeared, the atmosphere has shifted. People feel unsettled.

Some even said they thought they saw her in the lobby this morning, but when they checked, she was gone.

Luna stiffened.

 "She was here again?

"That is what they said.

But the security cameras showed nothing.

Luna's skin prickled. "That makes no sense.

"Exactly," Jenna whispered.

"It is almost like she can appear and disappear when she wants.

That night, as Luna prepared to leave, she walked through the dimly lit corridor toward the elevators.

The office was nearly empty, only the hum of the lights filling the silence.

She pressed the elevator button, waiting.

Then she felt it.

Not a sound. Not a shadow. Just the undeniable sense of being watched.

"Who is there?" she called softly, her eyes scanning the hall.

Silence answered.

The elevator dinged, and the doors slid open.

She stepped inside quickly, her breath shallow.

The doors began to close, but at the last moment, they paused.

As if someone invisible had touched the sensor.

Luna's heart pounded.

She pressed the close button firmly, watching the doors slide shut.

The elevator carried her down, but her reflection in the mirrored wall did not ease her.

Her instincts screamed louder than ever.

Selina Cross was no ordinary woman.

Something about her was unnatural.

And Luna knew this was only the beginning.
