Chapter 3 - Monday, September 9

Dear Diary,

The first week at my new school is over, and it's flown by! I'm noticing my body slowly adjusting to the rhythm that's returning after the (well-deserved) holiday. I often start in the first school hour, except on Wednesdays. Which is nice, because then I can stay in bed a bit longer in the middle of the week. But because I start early most days, I'm also up a bit earlier. Which is great, of course!

Today I met a new girl. I first saw her in English class. She asked if she could borrow a pen, and we quickly started talking. Apparently, she was home sick for the first few days, so today was her first day. Luckily, she already knew some classmates from her previous year. I can feel a real connection with her. Her name is Maya and she's from the same village as me. I didn't have much time to chat with her today, maybe a few short conversations. But that will come!

I also went to a new part of the building today; I hadn't noticed it yet. But there are five classrooms at the back of the building, along a narrow staircase. Apparently, there's an emergency exit there too; the third door to the outside.

After school, I decided to walk home instead of taking the bus. It wasn't far, and I was in the mood for some exercise. Once home, I felt a little lighter, and I even decided to sit down at the piano for a bit to pick up an old hobby. But after five minutes, I realized it wasn't quite as satisfying as I'd hoped, so I continued on to my bedroom.

That evening, I get a text from Emma, an old friend. I hesitate for a moment, but then open it: "How's your new school?" A million thoughts race through my mind, but I dismiss the message and turn off my phone. This new start has to work.
