Chapter 5 - Wednesday, September 18

Dear Diary,

The first few weeks at this school are over, and I'm very happy with how things are going so far. Maya and I get along really well; I sit with her by my side for almost every lesson. It seems like we understand each other better than others, on a different level. Maybe I can truly leave the past behind me.

We've already finished our first assignments for the grades, and my grades are really coming along nicely. Mom and Dad are happy with these changes in my results. Yesterday in English class, we got our essay back; an 8.5! Ms. Thompson even wrote, "Beautiful writing, you should do something with it."

Today we had an awkward moment in math class. Another teacher came in to pick up some forms from Maya. I have no idea what it was about. The woman seemed friendly, but she gave me a long look, after which I quickly avoided eye contact.

Sitting on the bus on my way home from school, I get a call: Emma. I stare briefly at the letters on the screen that spell my old friend's name. I hesitate, but still, I put the phone back in my bag, ringing as it goes. After a few seconds, the ringing stops.

I lie awake late tonight. I still see 2:47 AM on the clock. My mind is constantly spinning, the thoughts keep pouring in. Everything is going so well. So why do I feel like I'm waiting for something bad to happen?
