Where the leaves of Konoha dance, the fire is out of control.
An Yan flipped through The First Hokage and the Will of Fire with great interest. The book roughly chronicled the cruelty of the Warring States Period and the First Hokage's process of pacifying the chaotic era. It mentioned Madara Uchiha briefly, portraying him as an insignificant character who was easily defeated by Hashirama Senju.
Was this Tobirama's doing? An Yan wondered. Are they already trying to downplay Madara's influence at this stage? The goal must be to subtly influence the Uchiha clan's way of thinking.
This history book was full of propaganda. That sneaky Tobirama.
An Yan continued reading. The rest was mostly empty rhetoric: everyone in Konoha is family, one must sacrifice the individual for the greater good, the sacrifices of the older generation light the way for the youth. The overarching message was that the village (the collective) is superior to the individual, encouraging ninja to bravely sacrifice themselves for their comrades and future generations.
It made sense. Hashirama's thought process when he killed Madara was that he would not spare anyone who threatened the village.
But that raised a question: who gets to represent the village (the collective), and who represents the individual?
Without clear guidelines for action, the entire concept of the Will of Fire seemed hollow and idealistic.
But then again, this was a world of constant warfare. It was normal for ideological education to be lacking.
The academy had provided a lot of textbooks, covering the entire curriculum from first to sixth year. If a student was a genius with strong self-study abilities, it was indeed possible to graduate within a year.
Besides ideological textbooks like the Will of Fire, the other books covered the knowledge an official ninja should possess: Chakra Analysis, A Brief Introduction to Genjutsu, The Three Basic Academy Jutsu, An Introduction to Curses and Seals, The Twelve Hand Seals, Mathematics and Ninja Tools, Common Poisons, Codes and Secrecy...
With his system, when An Yan opened these books, it was like clicking on a skill book in a game. The system panel automatically appeared.
"Chakra Analysis" Learning Progress: 7%... 14%... 28%... 100%. You have systematically learned to use chakra for simple offense and defense.
"A Brief Introduction to Genjutsu" Learning Progress: 7%... 36%... 67%... 100%. You have systematically learned basic visual genjutsu and can alter the immediate environment on a small scale.
"An Introduction to Curses and Seals" Learning Progress: 8%... 46%... 87%... 100%. You have systematically learned basic sealing jutsu and can seal an opponent's chakra for a short period.
After going through a few textbooks, An Yan had quickly skimmed them. Under the power of the system, he instantly understood all the knowledge, which was deeply ingrained in his mind. In the blink of an eye, he had become an all-around Genin. In terms of knowledge, he could apply for graduation immediately.
An Yan's fingers trembled slightly. If only I had a system like this back in my school days, he mused. Just a quick glance, and even if he didn't understand it, the system would help him comprehend and memorize it. Getting into a top university would have been a piece of cake.
Programmers, medical students, and law students would weep! With a system in hand, you could say goodbye to hair loss!
As An Yan was "reading" the skill books, Tsunade frowned, her beautiful little face filled with confusion. She tilted her head and watched him.
From her perspective, An Yan was flipping through the books at an incredible speed, barely glancing at the pages. She couldn't even make out the content before he had turned several pages. Yet, he had a thoughtful expression, as if he was actually absorbing the information.
Is he just pretending? Can anyone really read that fast?
Although they had just met, An Yan didn't seem like the type of childish boy who would put on an act to attract a girl's attention.
Puzzled, Tsunade reached out and pressed her hand on the book An Yan was flipping.
An Yan stopped, looking at her with a face that practically had a giant question mark floating above it.
"Did you actually read it?" Tsunade asked seriously.
"What else would I be doing?" An Yan retorted.
Tsunade didn't believe him. She grabbed the book he had just finished and prepared to quiz him. An Yan just shrugged, indicating he didn't mind.
"What does the Rat seal represent in ninjutsu?" Tsunade asked, sitting opposite him and staring intently.
"The Rat seal symbolizes 'the beginning.' It's associated with Water Release and is often used to activate water-style jutsu. It implies gathering power in stillness for an explosive burst." An Yan formed the Rat seal with his hands and answered with a smile.
"What about the Ram seal?" Tsunade asked, narrowing her eyes.
"The Ram seal symbolizes the sheep. It's connected to the soul and genjutsu. Most genjutsu use this seal." An Yan formed the Ram seal, and his chakra flared. He cast a simple genjutsu, and his appearance was suddenly enhanced with several layers of filters, making him seem to glow slightly.
"What does the Dog seal represent?" Tsunade's gaze was sharp.
"The Dog seal represents the dog, symbolizing eternity and sealing. Almost all sealing jutsu end with the Dog seal." An Yan formed the Dog seal and pressed his palm on Tsunade's shoulder.
Tsunade instantly felt her entire body go numb and weak. She couldn't channel her chakra. Before she could panic, just a breath later, she felt her mobility return.
Is that...? A sealing jutsu? Did he learn it just by looking at the book?
Tsunade took a deep breath and tossed the book back on the desk.
"This is no fun. I'm done."
There was no stumping him! It seemed An Yan was a true genius. Tsunade couldn't help but feel immense pressure.
As the granddaughter of the First Hokage, the entire Senju clan had high hopes for her, expecting her to shoulder the responsibility of protecting Konoha. The other clans in the village were also watching her.
And on the very first day of school, she met such a monstrous deskmate. Tsunade felt completely overwhelmed.
It seemed she wouldn't be able to beat him in academics. Fortunately, there were still practical combat classes. Although An Yan was a genius, as a commoner ninja, he probably didn't know any advanced jutsu. There was a good chance she could defeat him there.
Tsunade silently pumped her little fists to cheer herself on. An Yan watched her clenched fists nervously, afraid she might accidentally hit him.
He had a vivid memory of Tsunade's monstrous strength. In the original story, Jiraiya mentioned that when he was young, he got caught peeking at her bathing and she sent him flying over a hundred meters with a single punch. It was utterly ridiculous.
An Yan made a firm decision: he would never provoke Tsunade. He wasn't as durable as Jiraiya. With his fragile physique of 3 points, one punch from her and she'd probably be on her knees, begging him not to die.
