"Just tell us what you need us to do." Charles, though somewhat puzzled, said this nonetheless.
Ultron pulled out two patches and handed them to Charles and the others. "Stick these on your temples."
Charles took the patch and examined it. It was just a soft, thumb-sized sticker. Pinching it lightly, he could feel a tiny chip embedded inside. Following Ultron's instructions, the two of them affixed the patches to their temples.
Ultron nodded and continued, "These are neural connectors. I'm going to transmit your consciousness into a mental space. Think carefully about everything you experienced when you encountered Kin Grey, including the scenes when she attacked you. As long as you can provide approximate values, I can start constructing the suppressor."
Charles and Erik nodded, signaling they were ready. Ultron then made an "OK" gesture and began a countdown.
"You are about to enter the mental space. You may feel some discomfort, but don't panic. Steady your mind and do your best to recall the memories of that day so we can begin the connection!"
As soon as Ultron finished speaking, Charles and Erik felt their bodies shudder violently, their breathing quickening.
Within their consciousness, it felt as though they were falling into an endless abyss, an uncontrollable sense of plummeting that made them instinctively tense. Their hands gripped the armrests of their chairs tightly.
Charles' tension triggered his powers, causing nearby metal objects to subtly levitate. Any metal in the vicinity, regardless of quantity, began to float slightly.
"What the hell is going on?"
Quicksilver, seeing this, immediately ducked behind Ultron. Being a speed-based fighter, it was natural to hide behind Ultron when unsure. If there was a fight, Ultron would take the brunt first; Quicksilver would stay out of the way.
Ultron rolled his eyes at Quicksilver's behavior and shouted quietly at Charles and Erik, "Steady your minds!"
At the sound, Charles and Erik's bodies trembled again. Only now did their consciousness start to focus.
"That's right, Ultron said there might be discomfort. We need to calm down."
Charles' breathing gradually stabilized. The sensation of falling in their consciousness began to slow, and the surrounding scene started to shift. Soon, they arrived at the town where Kin Grey had been.
"Charles, are you okay?"
Erik saw Charles appear and hurried over. Being a telepathic mutant, he had naturally better control in such situations and had already reached this mental version of the town.
"I'm fine. Let's get on with the job," Charles replied, waving a hand.
Erik nodded, placed a hand on Charles' shoulder, and activated his telepathy. The scene shifted to the vicinity of Kin Grey's home.
There, two figures appeared—Erik and Charles themselves. Because this was a memory, the memory contained their past selves.
They walked closer to observe their past selves and Kin Grey in battle. Both of them focused on recalling as many details as possible so Ultron could gather precise information.
Because the target was still a mutant child, the past Charles and Erik had refrained from attacking, only passively countering her moves.
Suddenly, a golden light flared in Kin Grey's eyes within the memory. Her actions abruptly deviated from what Charles and Erik remembered, performing something that made the two of them instantly shiver.
The space around her body twisted, and Kin Grey looked directly at the real Charles and Erik. Her voice rang out: "Where is this? Your memories? To be able to do this… you're impressive."
The ambiguous tone sent Charles and Erik into shock, their eyes frozen on the fifteen- or sixteen-year-old girl.
"Impossible… this can't be. This is our memory world! How could she have independent consciousness?" Erik murmured. This was beyond his ability; after all, it was someone else's memory. One couldn't control themselves in another's memory. "This girl's power is definitely not just simple telepathy!"
At just fifteen or sixteen, Kin Grey was in the prime of her youth. Yet her eyes shone golden, and golden energy spheres appeared on her hands and feet.
Once the golden spheres manifested, she floated into the air.
The golden radiance made her look like a descending deity. Charles and Erik felt a sudden chill, a premonition of death that would only be fully understood years later.
"Not satisfied with the outside world? Now you want to play in my memories? I'll grant you that!"
Kin Grey formed a dazzling golden orb of energy in her right palm and hurled it toward Erik and Charles. Where the orb passed, the very space seemed to tear.
Charles and Erik knew there was no way to block it. But at that moment, the space before them twisted into a vortex, swallowing the golden orb.
"Well, she actually has independent action in the mental space… definitely not an ordinary mutant!"
The space in front of Charles twisted again, and two figures appeared—Ultron and Quicksilver.
"Fortunately, I can control space. Even though this is a mental realm, it's spatial in nature. Otherwise, I might not have been able to block that attack," Ultron said with a light laugh. His spatial control came from his body—the Tienyao Puppet body.
The Tienyao Puppet was a product of the Yihuo Continent, created by Emperor Xiao Yan and refined to the pinnacle of Douzun-level power. Those at Douzun-level could control space.
Ultron had long mastered this body, and his spatial control skills were fully honed.
