Chapter 136 - Jean Grey

Ultron smiled faintly, ignoring Quicksilver's complaints—he had already heard similar words countless times before.

Right now, within the Avengers, he was absolutely among the top-tier fighters. But placed in the context of a small general store, his abilities seemed less impressive.

Speed? Fast. The Green Lantern ring could break the speed of light.

Ultron's original metal body had been strong enough that even Quicksilver couldn't touch him, and his current body was even more impervious to harm.

And his sister Wanda? She wielded the universe's most enigmatic ancient magic—chaos magic—and had been trained by the Supreme Sorcerer, Doctor Strange. Her potential could only grow, never diminish.

Han Yu, as the general store's manager, had undeniable power, easily surpassing Ultron and Wanda. By comparison, Quicksilver was clearly the weakest in the shop.

When two unfamiliar figures suddenly appeared and effortlessly deflected her attacks, Jean Grey's face grew tense, her tone wary.

"Who are you? Are you here to hurt me too? Like them, are you from some mutant research institute?"

Since the arrival of these two men, the energy within her was signaling an emotion—a slight tremor of fear.

Jean Grey felt puzzled. She didn't fully know the limits of her own powers, but she knew that they had protected her from many external threats.

This was the first time she had felt her energy convey such a humanized sense of fear, stirring both curiosity and caution within her.

"It's a mutant academy—an academy!" Charles said, exasperated. "Changing the words changes the meaning. You didn't attack us because of that, did you?"

"I don't care if you call it mutants or variations, you're clearly not good people. You just want to use my powers for evil. I'm not going with you!"

Golden light erupted from Jean Grey's body again. Ultron quickly stepped forward to calm her.

"Hey, hey, girl, calm down. Listen to us. We really mean no harm. This mutant academy we established exists so that kids like you can have a place to live a normal life. You've faced discrimination for your powers before, haven't you?"

"So what? I don't care what they think." Jean Grey said, trying to keep her composure despite the remark hitting a nerve.

"No, you do care."

Ultron smiled at her. "If you didn't care, you wouldn't confine yourself at home, staying locked in your room, never going out. You're scared of their judgment and discrimination—that's why you don't leave, right?"

"To them, I'm just a freak. They despise me, hate me. That's why I stay inside!" Jean Grey said, her voice trembling with emotion.

"Yes, yes, I know. I know you bear all the grievances yourself, but this is not your fault." Charles now stepped forward, appealing to her emotionally. "Jean, listen. You are not a freak. You are human. You bleed when shot, you bleed when cut."

"People like us are just genetically different. We have special abilities, but if you ask me, we're an evolved form of humanity."

"But even so, mutants are a tiny fraction of humanity, not even ten percent. To protect mutants, we founded the mutant academy—to teach them control over their powers and give them a safe place to live. There's no malice. I believe you will understand, right?"

Charles looked at Jean Grey sincerely. She pressed her lips tightly, unsure of what to think, but the dazzling golden glow in her eyes had already faded.

Ultron and the others remained silent, quietly observing her, giving her time to consider.

Jean Grey recalled the experiences she had suffered at school, clenching her fists. Because of her powers, many had called her a freak, though it never escalated dramatically, like ordinary bullying.

Some unaware students were incited by others, repeatedly labeling her a freak, until she could no longer endure it and shut herself indoors.

Seeing her angry expression and fists slowly clenching, Ultron's face darkened. He was ready to act at any moment, invisible air currents already darting between his fingers.

In this conscious world, the moment Jean Grey's mind gained autonomous awareness, Ultron and Quicksilver immediately sensed a strong psychic wave radiating from Charles and Erik's minds.

The psychic wave was immense and hostile. Though Ultron didn't fully understand what was happening, he and Quicksilver quickly applied metal patches, entering the consciousness space of Charles and Erik.

The timing was perfect. Jean Grey was just about to attack Charles and Erik directly. Ultron, intercepting the strike, was genuinely surprised.

Had Charles and Erik been hit, the psychic damage would have been severe, directly affecting their physical bodies with potentially irreversible consequences. This showcased the terrifying level of Jean Grey's mutant abilities.

"Waking up with Level 3 mutant powers already… this girl's mutant potential could reach Level 4, or even Level 5!"

Even usually playful Quicksilver wore a serious expression. He knew the mutant classification system: Level 3 mutants already possess tremendous combat strength; Level 4 mutants are among the elite.

Level 5 mutants, without exaggeration, can affect planets or even entire universes.

By the mutant classification, Quicksilver and Ultron are currently mid-to-high Level 4 mutants. Quicksilver's strength is limited to dominating on a planetary scale, whereas Ultron's is incalculable. His current power could easily crush a small asteroid with one hand, though he had never seriously fought before. Quicksilver estimated he could effortlessly pulverize a small asteroid with one hand.

Jean Grey, a mutant whose potential could reach Level 5, could never be allowed in the open world—too dangerous.

If her emotions ever became unbalanced, the resulting damage would be unimaginable.

"Jean, don't worry. At the mutant academy, you will face no discrimination. You will learn to control your powers under the guidance of teachers. Eventually, we will form a superhero team, like the Avengers. You will become a superhero and shock those who underestimated you."

Charles spoke, introducing the concept of the X-Men for the first time. The academy had not yet been built, and Han Yu had not informed him about it.

Creating a superhero organization similar to the Avengers was Charles's personal vision. He wanted mutants to assist ordinary humans, hoping they could coexist peacefully.
