Twenty one year old sister Isabella sat in the Mother superiors's office as she waited for her.
She looked around the neat office filled with paintings of Christ, Mary and the pope himself.
She wondered why Mother superior had sent for her.
It was not that mother superior was a woman to be afraid of, quite the opposite in fact.
Mother superior was kind, looked after all the nuns with a blessed heart.
But Isabella couldn't help feeling like something was off the moment Sister Claudia had come to meet her when she was baking in the kitchen, to inform her that Mother superior had sent for her.
She took in a deep breath and gently touched her rosary wrapped round her wrist.
The door opened and Mother Superior came in.
"Sister Isabella." Mother superior said as she closed the door behind her. "I'm so sorry for keeping you waiting."
"It's fine mother." Isabella said as she adjusted in her seat.
Mother superior took her seat behind the desk and let her glasses rest on her bossom.
She placed her interlaced fingers on her desk and looked at Isabella.
"I'm sure you're wondering why I have sent for you." Mother superior began. "Isabella, from the moment you were found at our doorstep our lives have been filled with joy and for that we are forever grateful."
Isabella shook her head at the old woman. "No it is I who should be grateful for you taking me in."
Isabella had been found in a basket at the doorstep of the convent when she was just a baby.
No one had ever come to claim her so she had been raised in the convent.
It was the only home she had ever come to know and love.
"Years ago, our convent had been in financial troubles with the mortgage and we would have been sent out to the streets had it not been for Mr Lionel Kane. You see Mr Kane was one of the richest men in America and yet so humble. You probably heard the stories." Mother superior continued. "-of how he came to our rescue by buying the convent and giving it to us as a donation. Ever since then he had been godsent and sent numerous donations. Even after his death, -the blessed virgin bless his soul- he still insured in his will that we received a certain amount of donations every year."
"Yes I'm aware of him mother." Isabella nodded wondering what she had to do with any of this.
"I'm sure you're wondering why I'm telling you any of this." Mother superior said as if reading her mind. "I'll get there soon my child."
"He had a son. His only and first son, Adrian Kane. Although a bit different from his father, he still shares the same blood. Years back Adrian's wife died in childbirth but the child survived. He is a troubled young man and we heard word that he has been looking for a nanny."
"Isabella I've seen you handle children. During children's mass they flock around you. It's a gift that comes to you naturally. I've never seen anything like it in my life before." Mother superior said. "I know this is a lot to ask of you. But in gratitude to Late Mr Kane and all the things he has done for us, I had hoped that you would take the offer and be a nanny to his Son's motherless child."
