Chapter 1 - Year 325 of the Sanctum Era: The Familiar Taste of Brioche

Equinox Estate, Blanche's room.

The faint aroma of lilacs filled the air as sunlight streamed through the tall windows, casting a golden hue on the elegant furnishings of Blanche Van Equinox's chamber. Seated before a large mirror framed in silver vines, Blanche adjusted her braid with deliberate care, her reflection showing a composed expression that masked the slight flicker of nervous anticipation in her eyes.

From behind her, a soft knock broke the silence.

"Milady, may I enter?" asked Elise, her personal maid, her voice light and professional.

"Yes, Elise. Come in," Blanche replied, her tone as smooth as porcelain yet tinged with a reserved warmth.

The door creaked open, revealing Elise, a young woman with a sharp, efficient demeanor. In her hands, she carried a neatly folded set of robes embroidered with intricate sigils.

"Your uniform for today's schedule, Milady," Elise announced as she placed the outfit on Blanche's bed. "The carriage will be ready within the hour. Shall I help you dress?"

Blanche hesitated for a moment, her eyes lingering on the uniform. "No need, Elise. I'll manage."

"Very well, but do call if you need assistance," Elise said, stepping back but hesitating. "Milady, I apologize for my intrusion… you seem preoccupied this morning. Are you perhaps anxious about your first day in the academy?"

Blanche smiled faintly, her noble mask slipping ever so slightly. "Anxious? I'm not sure entirely. The academy is not quite the same as the balls and banquets I'm accustomed to, is it?"

Elise chuckled. "No, Milady. But I'm certain you'll express yourself to them all the same."

Dining Hall,

As Blanche descended the grand staircase, the faint clinking of silverware echoed through the vast hall. The Dining table, adorned with fine linens and gleaming crystal, was already set for her morning meal. At the head of the table, sat her father, Duke Equinox, his stern features softened slightly as he sipped his tea.

"You're late," he remarked, not unkindly, as Blanche approached and took her seat.

"My apologies, Father." she replied with practiced politeness, reaching for the delicate porcelain cup before her.

Duke Equinox set down his cup, fixing her with a measured gaze. "Today marks the beginning of an important chapter for our family. Asterblume Academy is not merely a school— it is a proving ground. Your Mother and I expect you to represent the Equinox name with the dignity and excellence it commands."

"I understand, Father," Blanche said, her tone steady despite the weight of his words.

He studied her for a moment longer before his expression softened. "You've always excelled in your studies and your craft, Blanche. I have no doubt that you will thrive. However, remember—our actions reflect not only on yourself but on the entire legacy of this family."

"Good. Now, Finish your meal. The carriage won't wait for reasons why you are late.", The duke finished his meal earlier than his daughter did, putting his fork and knives on the table, before sternly stares at Blanche, and her unfinished food.

Outside the Estate

The polished carriage gleamed in the morning sun, its crest—a silver crescent entwined with blooming vines—catching the light. The family's insignia, a mark of their centuries-old legacy, stood proudly on the doors, a reminder of the weight Blanche carried with her. The estate staff had gathered along the cobblestone pathway, bowing respectfully as Blanche approached.

Duke Equinox stood at the base of the steps, hands clasped behind his back. "Asterblume Academy is a place where brilliance thrives and mediocrity is forgotten. You've been prepared for this your entire life, Blanche. Show them why the name Equinox is spoken with reverence, worthy of their time."

Blanche nodded, keeping her posture perfect even as her heart fluttered with anticipation. "I will, Father. I will not disappoint you."

As she reached the carriage, Elise stepped forward with a small parcel wrapped in velvet. "Milady, I packed a few of your favorite sweets." the maid said with a faint, almost motherly smile.

"Thank you, Elise," Blanche replied, her tone softening as she accepted the bundle.

The chauffeur opened the door, bowing deeply. Blanche hesitated for a fraction of a moment, her gaze lingering on the grand estate she had called home. This would be the first time she would leave it for more than a fleeting trip.

"Milady?" the chauffeur prompted gently.

Blanche inhaled deeply, steadying herself, and stepped into the carriage. The interior was luxurious yet uncomfortably formal—plush cushions embroidered with the Equinox crest and a faint scent of lavender. As the door closed behind her, Blanche peered out the window at her father, who stood watching with his usual stoic expression.

With a sharp flick of the reins, the carriage began to move. The rhythmic clatter of wheels against stone filled the air, and the estate gradually disappeared from view, replaced by the sprawling fields and forests of the countryside.

Blanche sat in silence, her gaze fixed on the horizon. The name Asterblume Academy echoed in her mind—a place of promise and peril, where her skills and character would be tested beyond anything she had faced before.

As the carriage rolled on, she whispered to herself, a small smile breaking through her composed exterior.

"Let's see what this new chapter holds."

The sound of steady horse steps, and the rays of sun reflects on Blanche's cart window. Time passes incredibly slow, as the cart holds a consistent pace while Blanche decides to distract herself for the time being.

"This would take very long, indeed."

By the time she arrived at the center of Sonnefield, a park, Blanche saw a large fountain that captivates anyone's eyes that pass by. Not like it feels special to her, she's used to the commotion, or even the views of the capital city she's familiar with.

An elf with blond hair walked through the crowds, her hair was a stark contrast to those around her, and her pale skinned body covered with a brown robe, loose hood on the elf's back. That reminds Blanche, that she, herself is a noble who is also a figure with outstandingly bright hair color.

"I have never seen a noble like her, those ears…", Blanche apparently staring in disbelief, peeking through the windows of her cart while thinking to herself.

But then, she blinked. The woman in the hood vanished without trace, leaving Blanche's vision.

"Weird.", Blanche mutters to herself.

Finally, the cart arrived at the academy's front gate. Those metal fences might seem useless at the first glance, but the entire place was covered with a thick magic barrier that prevents everyone inside from any harm.

Blanche's cart was quiet internally, and by the time the door of the passenger's seat was opened, the echoes of everyone's voices, the atmosphere of bustling streets adjacent to them, and the school's anthem was played with sound magic, emitted right on top of the academy's skies.

"This is just the beginning.", Blanche quietly whispers for herself, as she takes a small step, and the soles of her shoes finally touch the stone floor beneath her.

Asterblume Academy – Opening Ceremony

The grand hall of Asterblume Academy buzzed with life, its high-arched ceilings adorned with banners representing the school's storied history. The central chandelier, an intricate display of glowing crystal shards, illuminated the room in warm, shimmering light. Students from all walks of life filled the space, their excited chatter blending into a steady hum.

Blanche stood near the back, her presence commanding attention despite her quiet demeanor. She wore the academy's formal uniform—a tailored coat with silver embroidery, a high-collared blouse, and a flowing skirt—carrying herself with the poise expected of her noble lineage.

"Lady Equinox!" A cheerful voice broke through the noise.

Blanche turned to see a pair of students approaching, one carrying a banner emblazoned with a golden lion's head. The boy, with a wide grin, stepped forward.

"I'm Arthur, president of the Magic Arts Club," he said with an enthusiastic bow. "We would be honored if someone of your talents would join us. With your Invocation skills, you'd be an incredible addition!"

Blanche offered a polite smile. "Thank you for the invitation, Arthur, but I'm afraid I must decline while I appreciate your kind words, I'd prefer to focus on my studies for now."

Arthur's smile faltered slightly, but he nodded regardless. "Of course, I understand. If you change your mind, our club is always open!"

As he stepped aside, a group of students in flowing robes approached, their leader holding a staff adorned with a glowing crystal.

"Lady Equinox! A pleasure to meet you, I apologize for popping out all of a sudden. May I have your precious time? I- "

Blanche immediately ignores their never-ending screams and shouts, shoves their bodies one by one to make a space for herself. The crowds seem too much for her to handle, especially without the help of anyone, and on top of that, she couldn't possibly handle their matters at the current moment.

"My current schedule will not allow me the time to commit fully to such pursuit. Judging by the looks of your equipment and attire, you must be from the Mystical Studies Society club, I suppose? I must be honest, I would want to join. However, joining without giving my best effort would cost a significant loss in time, due to my target being set elsewhere."

The girl's expression softened, she knew that Blanche would be busy, and had other objectives that she had set beforehand. "A thoughtful response, Lady Equinox. Should you ever find time, we would be delighted to have you in our club! Have a nice day!"

The pattern continued—students from various clubs, from Archery to Fine Arts, eagerly approached Blanche, each pitching their activities with enthusiasm. Despite her polite refusals, Blanche's sincerity and grace left no hard feelings.

Finally, a sound of an echoing loud bell tolled, silencing the chatter as everyone headed toward the stage.

At its center stood a young man with striking features, he demands everyone in the room quiet, seeking authority for the upcoming announcement that he has to make. His uniform bore the insignia of The Student Council, And the golden badge on his chest marked him as the President

"Welcome, new students, to Asterblume Academy." his voice rang out, calm yet commanding. "My name is Silas Caelumortis, your Student Council President. Today marks the beginning of your journey—a path of growth, discovery, and, most importantly, excellence."

Silas's piercing gaze swept across the hall, momentarily locking with Blanche's. He nodded slightly, acknowledging her presence before continuing.

"This academy will challenge you, inspire you, and perhaps even humble you. Embrace it all, for every experience here will shape you into who you are meant to become. Remember, you are not alone. Asterblume academy thrives because of the bonds we forge with one another."

The hall suddenly filled with applause, and Silas stepped down, weaving through the crown as students began dispersing toward the exits. To Blanche's surprise, he stopped in front of her, extending a hand.

"Lady Equinox" he greeted, his tone cordial yet sharp. "Welcome to Asterblume Academy. I trust you'll make a significant mark here."

Blanche shook his hand, her composure unshaken. "Thank you, President Caelumortis. I'll do my best to meet the academy's expectations."

His lips curved into a faint smile. "I'm sure you will. The council will be watching with interest. Should you need anything, don't hesitate to reach out."

As he walked away, Blanche exhaled softly, the weight of the day settling on her shoulders. She glanced around the grand hall one last time, the chatter of her peers swirling around her

The Story of Blanche von Equinox had officially begun.

Academy Classroom

The large classroom hummed with low chatter as students settled into their seats. The grand windows bathed the space in warm sunlight, casting intricate patterns onto the polished wooden floor. Blanche Van Equinox entered gracefully, her presence drawing a few whispers from her peers. She adjusted her uniform and moved towards her designated seat.

Beside her sat a girl shrouded in an aura of quiet intimidation—Zhen Yuxin. Her sharp eyes scanned the room with disinterest, her fingers drumming lightly on the desk. The whispers in the classroom grew louder, as several students sneaked glances at her.

"That's Zhen Yuxin, the Shadow Baroness."

"She's so blunt, I heard she made a third-year cry during Ceremony."

"Don't you think her shadows are creepy? She's like a walking nightmare."

Blanche, overhearing the murmurs, glanced at Yuxin, who seemed unaffected by the attention. Gathering her courage, Blanche decided to break the ice.

Blanche her with a warm smile "Hello there. I'm Blanche Van Equinox. May I know your name?"

Yuxin turned her head slowly, her piercing gaze locking onto Blanche. For a moment, she said nothing, as if gauging the intent behind Blanche's approach, scanning her top to bottom. Then, with a voice as steady as her demeanor, she replied. "Zhen Yuxin. You can call me Yuxin."

Blanche maintains her composure "It's a pleasure to meet you, Yuxin. I noticed we're seatmates. I hope we can work well together."

With raising an eyebrow Yuxin smiled sinisterly, she scoffed. "Work well together? Is that what nobles say when they don't know how else to make small talk?"

Blanche blinked, momentarily taken aback, but her smile remained intact even if her expression filled with disbelief. "Perhaps. But I truly mean it. I'm not fond of superficial pleasantries either."

This seemed to pique Yuxin's interest. She leaned back in her chair, her stern expression softening just slightly. "That's… unexpected. Most people either try to flatter me or avoid me entirely. Looks like the rumors about you having a kind heart and not being picky about friends were true."

Blanche with a light chuckle, she replied. "Let's just say I've had enough flattery to last a lifetime."

The two sat in silence for a moment, a comfortable pause amidst the classroom's chatter. Then Blanche spoke again, curiosity glimmering in her eyes.

"I've heard a bit about your skills. They must be incredibly powerful. Do you mind if I ask how you control them so effortlessly?"

Yuxin's lips curved into a faint smirk, the first sign of amusement she had shown. "Effortlessly? That's generous of you to say. It took years of training to keep them in check. And even now, they seem to have a mind of their own sometimes."

Blanche nodded thoughtfully, "That must be challenging. But it speaks volumes about your determination. I admire that."

For the first time, Yuxin appeared caught off guard by the sincerity in Blanche's voice. She glanced away, her fingers momentarily still.

"Thanks… Not many people… say things like that."say Yuxin quietly

Blanche's smile widened, sensing a connection beginning to form. The classroom bell rang, signaling the start of their lesson. As the instructor entered, Blanche leaned slightly towards Yuxin.

"If you ever want to talk more—or even spar—just let me know.", says Blanche whispering close to Yuxin's ear.

Despite all that, Yuxin's stern expression gradually returned, but this time there was a glimmer of something softer in her eyes.

Yuxin with her faint smile "I'll keep that in mind."

And with that, the lesson began, but for the two, the seeds of an unusual but promising friendship had been sown.

After Class - Academy Courtyard

The lesson ended, and students streamed out of the classroom, their animated conversations filling the air. Blanche and Yuxin exited together, walking side by side toward the academy's lush courtyard. The chatter from earlier about Yuxin had not subsided; if anything, it grew louder with more students joining the discussions.

"Did you see her? She barely speaks, but she's terrifying."

"I heard her shadows can crush a person in an instant."

"No wonder no one dares to sit near her—except Lady Equinox, of course."

Blanche glanced at Yuxin, who seemed completely unbothered by the gossip swirling around them.

Blanche with a curious tilt of her head "Do you always ignore them, or does it not bother you?"

Yuxin gave a small shrug, her expression indifferent. "Words are cheap. People love talking about things they don't understand. It's not worth the energy to care."

Blanche smiled, impressed by Yuxin's calm composure. "I suppose that's one way to stay focused. But I think they're just intimidated by how capable you are."

Yuxin stopped walking for a moment, turning to face Blanche."And you're not?"

Blanche met her gaze steadily, her tone gentle but firm."Why should I be? Power doesn't define someone's character. Besides, I've seen my fair share of intimidating things. You're not one of them."

a faint smirk tugged at her lips. "You're either brave or reckless. Maybe both."

Blanche grinning playfully"I like to think of it as perceptive. You seem like someone worth getting to know."

The two continued their walk, eventually settling onto a bench beneath a sprawling oak tree. The academy's grand architecture loomed around them, a testament to centuries of history.

"You mentioned earlier that your shadows are hard to control sometimes. Does it get easier over time?"

Yuxin leaned back, crossing her arms. "A little. It's like taming a wild animal—constant effort, constant vigilance. They're powerful but… unpredictable."

Blanche nodded thoughtfully, "That must require immense discipline. It sounds like you've mastered it well enough to be one of the best in our class."

Yuxin glanced at her, her expression unreadable. "People assume mastery because they don't see the struggle. But you… you're different. You ask about the effort, not just the result. That's rare."

Blanche smiled warmly, sensing a subtle shift in Yuxin's demeanor. "I've always believed the journey is just as important as the destination. Everyone has their challenges, even if they're unseen behind people's eyes."

Yuxin looked away, her gaze softening as she stared at the bustling courtyard. "You're surprisingly insightful for a noble. Most people like you care more about appearances than substance."

Blanche chuckled, brushing a strand of hair from her face."I've had enough of that, honestly speaking. Genuine connections are what I value most."

A comfortable silence fell between them, broken only by the distant murmur of students and the rustle of leaves in the breeze. Finally, Yuxin spoke, her voice quieter than before.

"You're not like the others here. Maybe… that's not such a bad thing.", say Yuxin

Blanche teasingly, "Is that your way of saying you like me?"

Yuxin rolled her eyes."Don't push your luck, Lady Equinox."

Both of them laughed softly, the tension between them dissolving into something lighter, friendlier.

As the bell signaling the next session rang, Blanche stood and offered her hand to Yuxin.

"Shall we, Yuxin?"

Yuxin hesitated for a moment before accepting the gesture, her firm grip meeting Blanche's steady one. "Let's go then, Blanc. But don't think this means I'll go easy on you if we ever spar."

Blanche smiling brightly, "I wouldn't want it any other way."

Academy Classroom – Lesson Two: The Measure of Power - Training Room

The spacious classroom hummed with quiet anticipation as the students filed in. A large circular platform stood at the front of the room, etched with glowing runes that shimmered faintly in the sunlight streaming through the tall windows. This was the arena where students would demonstrate their Astraga's abilities. At the center of the platform, an instructor in flowing robes adjusted her spectacles. Her sharp gaze scanned the room, silencing the last murmurs of conversation.

"Good morning, everyone," she began, her voice steady yet authoritative. "I am Professor Elyra, and today's lesson is crucial for understanding your capabilities as Pactmakers. You will each summon and demonstrate your Astraga's power. The academy will evaluate not only the raw strength of your abilities but also your control and adaptability. Step forward when your name is called."

The air grew heavy with excitement and tension. Blanche Van Equinox, seated near the front, exchanged a glance with Yuxin.

"Think they'll make a spectacle out of it?" Yuxin murmured, her voice low and dry.

Blanche tilted her head slightly, a hint of a smile gracing her lips. "I'd imagine they will. After all, this is as much a test of poise as it is of power."

"Poise," Yuxin repeated, scoffing softly. "Not exactly my specialty."

Professor Elyra called the first name, and one by one, students approached the platform. The room buzzed with awe as Astraga of various forms were summoned: flaming serpents, crystalline constructs, and shimmering elemental beings.

Finally, the professor's voice rang out, "Blanche Van Equinox."

Blanche rose gracefully, her movements drawing whispers from the students. She stepped onto the platform, the runes glowing brighter beneath her feet. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath, her Essence resonating in harmony with her Pact.

In a swirl of silver and violet light, an Astraga materialized—a regal, ethereal figure with flowing, translucent armor and radiant wings. Its presence commanded the room's attention, a manifestation of Blanche's mastery over Invocation.

Professor Elyra nodded approvingly. "A fine summon, Lady Equinox. Let us see its capabilities."

Blanche extended her hand, and Astraga obeyed her unspoken command. With a sweep of its radiant wings, it created a barrier of light, the energy shimmering like a protective dome. Then, with another gesture, the Astraga unleashed a controlled burst of energy at a practice target, disintegrating it with precision.

"Excellent control," Professor Elyra remarked. "Your synchronization is remarkable. You may step down."

Blanche inclined her head politely and returned to her seat, where Yuxin waited with an unreadable expression.

"Impressive," Yuxin admitted, though her tone carried its usual blunt edge.

"Thank you," Blanche replied, her smile soft. "Your turn will be even more so, I'm sure."

Yuxin snorted lightly but said nothing as her name was called next. She strode to the platform with measured steps, her sharp gaze locking onto the professor.

"Zhen Yuxin," Professor Elyra announced. "Demonstrate your Pact."

Yuxin closed her eyes briefly, her Essence flaring like an ink-black wave. Shadows spilled from her feet, coalescing into an enormous, clawed hand that extended outward, its movements fluid yet menacing. The tendrils writhed, stretching across the platform like a living entity.

With a flick of her wrist, Yuxin shaped the shadow into a massive, serrated claw that slammed into a practice target. The strike obliterated the target, leaving the crowd in stunned silence. Then, with a subtle motion, she transformed the shadow into a protective shield, encasing herself in a dome of impenetrable darkness.

Professor Elyra watched intently, her expression unreadable. "A formidable display of raw power, but control is key, Baroness Yuxin. Restraint must accompany strength."

"I'm well aware," Yuxin replied curtly, dissipating the shadows with a wave of her hand.

As she returned to her seat, Blanche leaned slightly toward her, her tone light. "You certainly left an impression."

Yuxin smirked faintly. "Good. Maybe they'll stop underestimating me now."

The lesson continued, but the marks left by Blanche's elegance and Yuxin's sheer power lingered in the minds of their classmates. The two shared a quiet understanding—different in style but equal in their determination to excel.

The room was electric with excitement as the remaining students showcased their Astraga abilities. Each display brought gasps, applause, or murmurs of awe, filling the grand classroom with energy. From elemental manifestations to intricate constructs, the diversity of power reflected the rich legacy of Asterblume Academy.

One student summoned a swirling vortex of water, weaving it into a serpentine shape that lashed at targets with precision. Another conjured a golem of glowing stone, its lumbering form surprisingly agile as it smashed through the mock obstacles.

Blanche watched each performance with a composed smile, her analytical gaze noting strengths and areas of refinement in her peers' techniques. Beside her, Yuxin remained impassive, arms crossed, her expression unmoved by the spectacle.

As the last student stepped down from the platform, Professor Elyra clapped her hands, drawing the class's attention.

"Well done, all of you. Your first demonstrations reflect the potential you each hold. Some of you have control that rivals even advanced Pactmakers, while others need more refinement. Regardless, you are here to grow and learn. Remember: mastery is a journey, not a destination."

The class nodded in acknowledgment, the atmosphere settling as the professor continued.

"Now, before we conclude today's session, I have an announcement. Tomorrow, we will hold Asterblume Academy's Annual Newcomer Event. This tradition is meant to celebrate your arrival and test your teamwork and resourcefulness in a less structured environment."

The students began whispering among themselves, excitement bubbling through the room.

Professor Elyra raised a hand to quiet them. "The event will take place in the Forest located in the southern parts of Eurandel, a carefully managed wilderness within the academy's grounds. The objective is simple: retrieve one of the marked artifacts hidden throughout the area and return it to the central pavilion. These artifacts are provided by the Student Council and vary in form, size, and difficulty to locate."

She glanced at her notes before continuing. "You may choose to work alone or in groups. However, remember that teamwork is highly encouraged as it reflects the values we uphold at Asterblume. There are a few rules to keep in mind:

Any harm or sabotage will result in immediate disqualification.Cooperation is rewarded; selfishness is not.Although you are allowed to attack other participants, never try to overdo it.The more artifacts you gain, the more your score will rise up within ranks.Don't hold any grudges, we are the proud students of Asterblume Academy, don't make the school's reputation bad.

Each artifact has its unique properties and challenges. Consider this an opportunity to showcase your adaptability and forge new connections."

With that, the professor gestured toward the exit. "You may collect additional details from the event staff at the designated booth outside. That will be all for today. Dismissed."

After Class – Blanche and Yuxin

The students dispersed, clustering together to form teams. Blanche and Yuxin exited the classroom together, their footsteps echoing through the stone corridors. Blanche seemed thoughtful, her gaze fixed ahead as they walked.

"Are you going to participate?" Blanche asked, her tone casual but curious.

Yuxin shrugged, her sharp features drawn into a faint scowl. "Doubt it. It sounds like a waste of time. All pomp and no substance."

Blanche glanced at her sidelong, her lips curving into a knowing smile. "And yet, it's a chance to apply your skills in a different way. Surely, you see the value in that?"

Yuxin scoffed. "Value? In running around a forest looking for trinkets? No thanks."

Stopping in her tracks, Blanche turned to face Yuxin directly. "I understand how it might seem trivial, but think about it: everyone will be there, showcasing their strengths and learning to complement each other. This event is more than a game—it's an opportunity to see how others think and operate under pressure."

Yuxin raised an eyebrow, her arms crossed defensively. "I'm fine on my own. I don't need to waste my time babysitting amateurs."

Blanche stepped closer, her expression earnest. "I'm not asking you to babysit anyone. I'm asking you to work with me. I believe we'd make a strong team—your precision and adaptability paired with my support and strategy."

For a moment, Yuxin was silent, her sharp eyes narrowing as she studied Blanche. "Why me?"

"Because I admire your capabilities," Blanche said simply, her voice calm yet firm. "I know you value efficiency and results. So do I. Together, I believe we can achieve something exceptional—and maybe even enjoy it along the way."

Yuxin sighed, rubbing her temples. "You're persistent, I'll give you that. Fine. But don't expect me to play nice with everyone."

Blanche's smile widened, her eyes sparkling with satisfaction. "I wouldn't dream of it. Shall we meet tomorrow morning before the event?"

"Sure," Yuxin muttered, her tone reluctant but tinged with faint amusement. "But if this turns out to be as pointless as I think it will, you owe me."

Blanche chuckled lightly, nodding. "Fair enough. I'll make it worth your time."

As they parted ways for the day, Blanche felt a quiet triumph. She had gained more than a teammate—she had taken the first step toward earning Yuxin's trust. And for Yuxin, though she wouldn't admit it, the prospect of working with someone who saw her as an equal was intriguing enough to give the event a chance.
