Faced with all sorts of trouble coming his way, an ordinary person would probably have gone crazy by now. But Tony Stark? He didn't care.
After all, he had an enormous team of lawyers whose sole job was to handle his personal affairs—perfectly equipped for these kinds of issues.
If compensation was due, he'd pay it. If it wasn't, they'd argue it in court—and nine times out of ten, Tony came out on top.
Still, even though it was all within manageable limits, Tony couldn't help feeling aggrieved. He was clearly being a hero—doing the right thing—yet somehow, being a "good guy" meant ending up with people pointing guns at him?
"Although… I guess that kind of makes sense."
At that moment, Bruce Banner suddenly spoke up.
"I don't know how you all feel about it, but if it were me—when I turn into the Hulk, I cause massive destruction. I feel guilty about it. Sure, Hulk's usually on the side that does the smashing, but emotionally, I imagine it feels about the same.
Think about it: if I'd just bought a house a few years ago, still paying off the mortgage… or just got a car with zero down, barely had time to enjoy it—then out of nowhere, some big green monster shows up, grabs my car, and throws it through my house?
Even if that green monster just killed a terrorist and might save my life someday—at that moment, could you really stay calm about it?"
Everyone went quiet for a moment. When Bruce put it that way, their own minor frustrations suddenly didn't seem so bad.
After all, the only real capitalist among them was Tony. He could afford to buy a new building without blinking an eye. The others? Not so much.
Even Captain America, who had just made a small fortune off licensing fees, wasn't really rich in mindset. He'd already planned to spend most of that money on charity, keeping only enough for basic living expenses.
And the rest were even more typical—educated, maybe well-off, but still paying mortgages and car loans.
Just look at Doctor Strange's tragic example—One day he's living in luxury, driving sports cars, acting like high society. The next, an accident wipes it all out. The mansion, the cars—gone. Just like that.
Anyone who's ever worked for a living could relate to that. In their shoes, wouldn't they have snapped too?
"Defending justice at all costs" sounds noble—But that's only fine as long as I'm not the cost.
From that angle, the team finally began to understand why the locals weren't thrilled about the Avengers—even if they'd just been liberated from Hydra's control.
For many of these superheroes, it was the first time they'd seriously thought about the collateral side of their heroism.
While the team was still deep in thought, Hydra's commander, Strucker, was shouting at his men:
"Those clowns the Americans sent to test us—make sure none of them leave alive! No surrender!"
Steve Rogers nodded. That matched the Hydra he remembered—unyielding fanatics to the end. They'd fight to the last man rather than give up.
That was part of what made fascist armies so hard to deal with: their brainwashing and unshakable will.
Of course… certain armies from the East were exceptions.
But before Steve could comment further, Strucker's tone suddenly shifted.
"Delete everything—erase the data! We're surrendering!"
"Huh?"
Everyone froze.
Just like that?
Steve blinked in disbelief. Just a moment ago, he'd been thinking about Hydra's legendary tenacity—their death-before-surrender mindset—and now… they were giving up?
Really?
This couldn't be the Hydra he knew.
The Hydra from seventy years ago would fight to the last bullet, the last soldier—more fanatical than even the Nazi SS.
Back then, Hydra had taught Steve a brutal lesson about how terrifying an enemy's conviction could be.
Now, seventy years later, they'd taught him a new one:Never trust your old assumptions.
"Old man… times have changed."
The others didn't seem quite as shocked, though. In this day and age, even modern armies clocked out at five. The so-called "self-defense forces" were pushovers compared to actual criminals.
Steve was only now realizing how much the world had changed. The era he'd come from was brutal and relentless; this one was soft, comfortable, civilized—maybe too civilized.
He'd been ready for a fight, only to find out… Hydra just wasn't built like that anymore.
"Generation by generation, they're getting weaker… even as enemies, they're disappointing."
He almost felt sorry for Red Skull. If that old monster really had survived and rebuilt Hydra, Steve could only imagine him shaking his head.
"Son… I'm disappointed."
Strucker, for his part, had his own reasoning.
"If the Avengers get hold of our technology, they'll soon have weapons comparable to ours!"
He clearly still had faith in Hydra's scientific edge. After all, even during World War II, they'd been decades ahead of the curve. And after decades leeching off S.H.I.E.L.D., their tech had only grown more advanced.
Many of their inventions—energy weapons, force shields—were things the outside world still called science fiction.
"And the twins?" asked Dr. List.
"They're not ready yet," Strucker said, shaking his head.
"No, I mean—where are they?"
Dr. List pointed to the spot where the twins were supposed to be—empty.
A streak of blue light flashed past like a lightning bolt.
The speedster!
Having read about him in Lin Feng's diary, the Avengers immediately recognized what they were seeing—a blue blur of motion that tore through the battlefield.
Tony's brow furrowed. Instinctively, his mind went to work on countermeasures. Lin Feng was also a speedster—but far beyond human comprehension. Still, this one, Quicksilver, was different. Mortal. Vulnerable.
If he could be caught off guard, maybe he could be beaten.
Could he design an electromagnetic net, perhaps? Something to trap the speedster mid-run, immobilizing him completely?
It was a start.
But what if Quicksilver ambushed him first?
Tony's mind buzzed with calculations. Too many unknowns. Too much risk.
And soon, the others would learn just how troublesome a speedster could be.
The Avengers—so used to facing ordinary soldiers with extraordinary power—were, for the first time, facing someone like them.
The first unlucky one was Hawkeye.
He loosed an arrow at Hydra's soldiers—but before it even hit, a flash of blue light slammed into him.
"Didn't you see her coming?"
Quicksilver smirked, slowing just long enough to taunt the archer.
Moments later, another blue blur swept past—knocking Captain America off his feet.
Drawing on decades of experience, Steve quickly assessed the situation.
"We're dealing with enhanced humans!"
His tone was grim. Hydra was proving to be far more dangerous than he'd expected.
While Black Widow tended to the fallen Hawkeye, she shouted,
"Someone take out that bunker for me!"
A thunderous roar answered her—Hulk barreling through enemy fire like an unstoppable tank, reducing the bunker to rubble.
No bullet, no shell could touch him.
Even so, Captain America quickly realized what was going on. The Hydra soldiers weren't fighting to win—they were stalling.
And if there was one thing Steve Rogers knew from experience, it was this:When an enemy commander stalls for time, they're either burning files or preparing to run.
"We need to move, now!" Steve shouted to Tony.
"On it!"
Tony dove through the air, lasers cutting through defenses until he found the weak point in Hydra's energy shield. One blast, and the barrier shattered—tanks and turrets blowing apart in the explosion.
"You're clear, people—go!"
From above, his voice echoed across the battlefield.
"New enhanced targets?" Thor boomed, hurling Hydra troops aside like rag dolls.
"Yeah," Steve confirmed grimly. "Fast. Really fast. We've never faced anyone like him before."
