Captain America, Steve Rogers, was badly injured, though the only reason he wasn't gravely hurt—or dead—was because of the Super Soldier Serum in his body.If it had been any ordinary person, they would have been seriously wounded, or even killed outright.
"Clint's badly hurt! Guys, we need to treat him immediately!"Black Widow's voice came urgently through the comms.
Thor looked at the waves of Hydra soldiers still charging toward them from a distance and said,"I can get him on the plane. You and Stark focus on finding the scepter."
"Understood!"Captain America nodded.
"They're coming in hard," Thor muttered.
"Yeah, like they're on steroids," Steve replied. The two moved in perfect sync, with Steve using his vibranium shield as a focus point while Thor's lightning struck through dozens of Hydra soldiers. Their coordination was seamless—and stunning to watch.
"Go find the scepter!" Thor ordered after clearing the wave of enemies, then hurled Mjolnir and soared into the air.
"For God's sake, watch your language!" Tony Stark scolded with exaggerated seriousness.
"He's still holding that grudge," Steve sighed helplessly—clearly, Tony was still getting back at him for telling him earlier not to curse.
Meanwhile, inside the Hydra base, chaos reigned. Baron Strucker was already fleeing when Tony stormed in.
The remaining Hydra soldiers panicked and opened fire, but their bullets couldn't even scratch Stark's Mark armor. He quickly dispatched them all, blasted Dr. List aside, and stepped out of his armor, which he then switched to combat guard mode.
Tony walked to a terminal and said to JARVIS, "You know what to do—I want a full data copy. Send one straight to Hill at HQ."
Outside, the fighting was dying down. But Tony was beginning to feel that something wasn't right. He scanned the room and muttered,"I know you're good at hiding…"
Then he said sharply, "Hey, buddy—run an infrared sweep of the area."
He might've doubted his eyes, but science never lied.
"In the wall to your left," JARVIS reported almost immediately."I've detected airflow between the concrete layers—possibly a hidden passage."
"Please be a secret door… please be a secret door…"
Tony pressed on the wall—and sure enough, it opened into a hidden passage.
Without hesitation, he stepped inside.
"Tony, you're getting reckless," Nick Fury commented after watching the footage. "Leaving the armor behind? In a Hydra base? One shot and you're dead. You know that, right?"
Everyone nodded in agreement. Without his armor, Tony was just a regular man—one bullet away from the grave.
Tony opened his mouth to defend himself, but there was really nothing he could say.He knew perfectly well how foolish it was. A soldier leaving his armor on the battlefield was practically suicide.
He wanted to argue that he was still a genius, billionaire, and playboy without the suit—but none of that mattered in a firefight.
He could only nod sheepishly.
"If that wall had been rigged with a trap, you'd have never seen it coming," Natasha added dryly.
"Alright, alright, maybe I was a little reckless…" Tony admitted. Seeing the concern in everyone's eyes, he finally sighed. "I'll be more careful next time."
What else could he do? They were worried, and he couldn't just brush it off.
"He's not a soldier," Steve said calmly. "He doesn't think about combat the way we do."
To him, Tony was just a playboy genius—an ordinary man who hadn't grown up on the battlefield. His lack of survival instinct made sense.
On the screen, Natasha was calming the enraged Hulk.Everyone turned to look at the two—clearly, there was something between them.
Even Bruce Banner himself looked baffled. He'd never imagined that the Hulk could respond this way.In the past, once he transformed, reason was gone until the rage burned out.The only person who'd ever been able to reach him was his ex-girlfriend.
But with General Ross as her father, that chapter of his life was long closed.
To Fury, though, this was a revelation—he'd just discovered a trump card capable of controlling the Hulk.No more fear of uncontrollable rampages.
Until now, his hesitation to contact Banner had been rooted in exactly that fear.
"Hulk understands human speech now…" Bruce murmured in awe. "It's like… watching a child grow up."
When the Hulk had first emerged, he was nothing but raw instinct and fury. But in that 2012 footage, he actually responded to a lullaby.
His mind wasn't mature yet—but he was evolving, slowly becoming more human.
Still, everyone's thoughts shifted again when Steve cornered Baron Strucker.
"Baron Strucker—Hydra's number one villain!" Steve declared righteously.
"Technically speaking," Strucker sneered, "I'm S.H.I.E.L.D.'s villain."
Even though he was terrified, he couldn't resist one final jab.
Hydra's evil deeds, in truth, were S.H.I.E.L.D.'s own.
S.H.I.E.L.D.'s… what?
A S.H.I.E.L.D. villain?
For a moment, everyone's minds froze.
The amount of information in that single sentence was staggering.Could this man actually have ties to S.H.I.E.L.D.?No—worse yet—was he S.H.I.E.L.D.?
In an instant, everyone felt a chill crawl down their spines. Fury, especially, broke into a cold sweat as a horrifying realization took root—
What if Hydra wasn't outside of S.H.I.E.L.D.…What if it was inside it?
No way. That's impossible… right?
But his gut told him otherwise. The idea was too terrifying to ignore.
S.H.I.E.L.D. = Hydra.
The "Serpent S.H.I.E.L.D."—the "Snake Bureau."
And then it hit him—Lin Feng's diary had mentioned that name before.
Back then, Fury had wondered why an organization with a snake emblem was so frightening. Now he knew. Hydra.
It all made sense now—"Serpent S.H.I.E.L.D." was literally Hydra within S.H.I.E.L.D.
No wonder they could never track Hydra down.No wonder every lead went cold.Because Hydra was S.H.I.E.L.D. all along.
To put it bluntly—S.H.I.E.L.D. is Serpent S.H.I.E.L.D., and Serpent S.H.I.E.L.D. is S.H.I.E.L.D.
The realization hit everyone like a thunderclap.
They were horrified—utterly terrified—because none of them had ever considered such a possibility.
Once that idea took hold, it couldn't be undone.
Phil Coulson wiped the sweat from his forehead. "No wonder… No wonder we could never find any trace of this so-called 'Serpent S.H.I.E.L.D.' It was us all along."
Everyone nodded grimly. Who would ever suspect their own agency? No one could've imagined Hydra had infested S.H.I.E.L.D. from within.
"No wonder Lin Feng said that being noticed by S.H.I.E.L.D. was fine—but being noticed by Serpent S.H.I.E.L.D. was terrifying," Natasha realized aloud. "We thought it was strange back then. Now it all makes sense."
Fury, however, wasn't convinced. "No… something doesn't add up," he muttered."From the very beginning—even back when S.H.I.E.L.D. was still the Strategic Scientific Reserve—every member was vetted with the strictest background checks. Hydra infiltrating on a large scale, enough to take over S.H.I.E.L.D.? Impossible!"
As the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Fury knew better than anyone how rigorous the vetting process was.Back in its earliest days, the SSR had been a top-level Anglo-American project. There was no way infiltration on that scale could have gone unnoticed.
Yet here they were—face-to-face with the unthinkable truth.
